    Informed traveller investigation Information for passengers – March 2018 review 25 May 2018 Summary In February, Network Rail said it was not able to finalise train timetables until six rather than the normal 12 weeks in advance. Therefore, on 23 February 2018 ORR wrote1 to Managing Directors of the Train Operating Companies (TOCs) regarding Licence Condition 4 of the Passenger Licence (the licence) which requires TOCs to provide appropriate, accurate and timely information to allow passengers to plan and make their journeys with a reasonable degree of assurance. We set out our expectations for compliance with the licence under three broad principles that we expected them to follow while the online timetables for passengers are unreliable and potentially subject to late change. The industry is already working to make improvements in passenger information by delivering a number of agreed initiatives; the Passenger Information During Disruption (PIDD) industry actions. Rather than create new tasks we have linked into the existing actions where possible, although it is recognised that some of the outstanding industry actions remain aspirational. As part of our close working relationship with Transport Focus we agreed that ORR would concentrate on capability issues, reporting on whether TOCs are able to deliver the principles. In turn, Transport Focus would carry out complementary work2 examining the impact on the individual passenger by looking at a detailed level for incorrect journeys that are in journey planners. This joint working was intended to provide a complete picture of the impact on passengers. We established a framework designed to monitor TOCs performance against each of the principles.

    London Life Hack: Joanna’s journeys Hi! I’m Joanna and I’m a Study Abroad Peer Advisor. In the four years that I have been living in London, I have spent a lot of time on the tube, on buses and on trains. Keep reading for my tips for getting around the city (and beyond!) like a true Londoner! Recognise this? Chances are, you’ll see a lot of this map during your time in London. It’s the Transport for London underground map – or TFL as you’ll get used to calling it. At first, it may look confusing but once you get the hang of it, it’s easy to understand. The map is split into different tube lines according to colour, such as the black Northern Line or the grey Jubilee Line. The map also displays the different zones of the underground system, starting with zone 1 which is central London, up to zone 9 (I have to say, I have never ventured this far!) Peak times are Monday to Friday from 06:30 to 09:30 and 16:00 to 19:00 – off-peak fares apply at all other times. Peak times are the busiest, so if you don’t want to spend time squashed up against strangers, try to avoid taking the tube at this time! The tube and buses are the modes of transport that I use the most, but there is also the London Overground, the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), trams and even riverboats. If you’re feeling adventurous, there are also Santander bicycles for hire at points across the city.

    When you arrive When you arrive at the airport, make sure you have the address and postcode of the place where you are staying. You will also need enough money in UK Pounds Sterling so that you can travel from the airport to your accommodation (see below). You may also find it useful to have a London trains and Underground map with you but always plan your journey in advance. London Heathrow – If you are arriving at Heathrow airport there are a number of ways you can travel to your accommodation. The Heathrow Express train takes 15 minutes to get to London Paddington station in central London and costs approximately £20 for a single express ticket. It will be cheaper to book these tickets in advance. London Heathrow is also on the Piccadilly line of the London Underground, it will be cheaper than the Heathrow Express train but will take a bit longer to get to central London-cost is approximately £2.10 for a single fare (off-peak*). London Gatwick - If you are arriving at Gatwick airport, the Gatwick Express and First Capital Connect trains both provide a service to central London (approximately £17.70 - online. Again, it will be cheaper to book tickets in advance and First Capital Connect will be cheaper (approximately £5- 10 for a single journey) but slower. London Gatwick airport does not have a London Underground station. London Luton - If you are arriving at Luton airport both First Capital Connect and East Midland trains operate from Luton Airport Parkway station (cost to central London approximately £15 for a single journey).
