26 27 The Davey Spurlock Fighting Heart Award 2019

Having a “Fighting Heart” describes a person who faces great adversity, but lines up anyway. FOOTBALL CLUB One who courageously and passionately casts aside the fears, doubts and limiting beliefs to overcome and ultimately earn their success. And by their actions inspire others. At Cal Lutheran we first discovered such courage, inspiration and passion in the life of a student named Davey Spurlock, for whom this honor is named. He overcame overwhelming odds that threatened his life, and went on to great accomplishments, both in football and in life.

This Year’s Recipient: Christopher Anderson

Christopher Anderson was born in South Central Los Angeles on March 5, 1994. He was pronounced a “crack baby” at birth due to his mother’s heavy use of drugs. Chris was adopted by his mother’s first cousin and moved to San Bernardino until the 8th grade, when he moved to Hemet. It was upon moving to Hemet that Chris fell in love with the game of football, where he went on to star at West Valley High School. During his senior season, he was going to sign with San Diego State, but an injury cut his season short and the scholarship offer was pulled. No stranger to ad - versity, he enrolled and played at Riverside City College for two years, where Anderson was highly decorated, including being named Junior College All-American. Christopher’s dream of playing Division I football materialized when he signed with Eastern Illinois University, the realization of a lifelong goal. However, during his time at EIU, Chris suf - fered with depression and began to lose focus on the football field and in the classroom. is led to issues with recre - ational drug use and he began running with the wrong crowd. In the summer before what should have been his final season at Eastern Illinois, when football had become all but an afterthought due to academic ineligibility, Chris contacted Anthony Lugo and Ben McEnroe to discuss attending Cal Lutheran to finish his degree and his football career. His GPA was not high enough to become immediately eligible, so while training with the team, Chris got his life back on track. He made positive lifestyle choices, he committed to his academics, and worked many jobs on campus to pay his way through school. Heading into his final season, the 2018-2019 school year, Chris’ hard work and dedication paid off. He was named to the CLU Honor Roll as a student, and was recognized by the head football coaches in the SCIAC as the top Run - ning Back in the conference, earning 1st Team All-SCIAC honors. Most importantly, Chris earned a degree in Sociol - ogy from CLU in May 2019, and is dedicated to serving others. Anderson’s life and football journey exemplify the spirit of the Davey Spurlock Fighting Heart Award.

How sweet it is! When the Cal Lutheran football team scores, everybody's sweet tooth gets satisfied by Karsten Lundring, a 1965 graduate of Cal Lutheran who has supported Kingsmen football for 54 years. His tradition of hurling candy into the stands every time Cal Lutheran scores began over 30 years ago. "Cal Lutheran scored a touchdown and I had a pack of Candy with me that I threw, and it's been a tradition ever since."
