The New York Times headline asked "Are Australia's Politics too Easy to Corrupt?,"1 while The Economist sarcastically referred to China as the "Meddle Country."2 The two articles were reacting to an investigation by Fairfax Media and ABC into the extent of China's political interference in Australia,3 that built on internal enquiries into the same issue by ASIO and Australia's Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet in 2015 and 2016.

    Communication Research and Politics Title: Across the Great Divide: Gender, Twitter and Election in the United Kingdom and New Zealand Authors: Susan Fountaine (Massey University), Karen Ross (Newcastle University) and Margie Comrie (Massey University) Paper accepted on 11.12.2018 – DOI: 10.1080/22041451.2018.1558774 1 Abstract Politicians’ use of Twitter has been well documented over the past decade but few studies have incorporated an explicitly comparative dimension. To explore how political and social context impacts upon tweet content, we analysed the substance and tone of 400 tweets from women MPs during the United Kingdom 2015 and New Zealand 2014 general election campaigns. Across our study, web links, visuals, and references to own campaign were common, though with some notable inter-party differences. A neutral tone prevailed, with positivity more present than negativity. NZ women MPs, particularly from the centre-right, demonstrated a broadcast and highly managed approach to Twitter. UK MPs were more interactive with both citizens and other MPs, shared more personal content, and largely ignored the media agenda. These comparative findings at least partly map onto the concentrated and diffuse personalisation approaches within the equalisation versus normalisation framework of social media. We conclude that region, party, and culture all play a role in the Twitter story, and are deserving of further scrutiny from political communication scholars. CHAPTER 4 THE CRUSHER AND THE ATTACK DOG The attack bloggers’ point of contact in the National government, year after year, remained John Key’s office. But Cameron Slater had another close friend and ally in the government, Cabinet minister Judith Collins. They had much in common. One cultivated the iron woman persona of Crusher Collins, future prime minister, the other the reckless bully-boy persona of Whale Oil, crusading outsider. They were drawn together by right-wing politics and a shared attraction to aggressive and often petty attack politics. Slater was a devoted supporter of Collins, using his blog to promote her and to attack her critics. Collins, in return, fed a continuous supply of material to Slater: public press releases, political gossip, tip-offs and serious leaks. She boast- ed for him in 2013 that ‘you might not like it but Whaleoil is better informed and better read than any other news outlet or social media’.1 They talked often by phone, and in the evenings and weekends they chatted via Facebook. In work hours Collins e-mailed him directly from her sixth-floor Beehive office. Often their exchanges were about small events of the day. The following are typical of Collins’s messages: ‘You should whack these guys hard, they are truly pathetic’;2 ‘Cam, FYI. Another own goal for plughead’, her name for Labour MP Clayton Cosgrove;3 could he edit her Wikipedia page and replace an unflattering photo;4 and, forwarding a document, ‘I think I seri- ously annoyed certain people over it.

    The Ministry of Public Input: Report and Recommendations for Practice By Associate Professor Jennifer Lees-Marshment The University of Auckland, New Zealand August 2014 www.lees-marshment.org [email protected] Executive Summary Political leadership is undergoing a profound evolution that changes the role that politicians and the public play in decision making in democracy. Rather than simply waiting for voters to exercise their judgement in elections, political elites now use an increasingly varied range of public input mechanisms including consultation, deliberation, informal meetings, travels out in the field, visits to the frontline and market research to obtain feedback before and after they are elected. Whilst politicians have always solicited public opinion in one form or another, the nature, scale, and purpose of mechanisms that seek citizen involvement in policy making are becoming more diversified and extensive. Government ministers collect different forms of public input at all levels of government, across departments and through their own offices at all stages of the policy process. This expansion and diversification of public input informs and influences our leaders’ decisions, and thus has the potential to strengthen citizen voices within the political system, improve policy outcomes and enhance democracy. However current practice wastes both resources and the hope that public input can enrich democracy. If all the individual public input activities government currently engages in were collated and added up it would demonstrate that a vast amount of money and resources is already spent seeking views from outside government. But it often goes unseen, is uncoordinated, dispersed and unchecked. We need to find a way to ensure this money is spent much more effectively within the realities of government and leadership.

    FINAL RESULTS FOR THE 2017 NEW ZEALAND GENERAL ELECTION December 2017 Parliamentary Library Research Paper Final Results after Special Votes The General Election of 23 September 2017 was New Zealand’s 52nd since general elections began in 1853. It was the eighth election conducted under the Mixed Member Proportional (MMP) voting system that was used first for the 1996 election. Following the counting of special votes and the release of the official results, there are five political parties and 120 members represented in the 52nd Parliament. This research paper summarizes differences between the preliminary (election night count) and the final election results, compares the 2017 election result with that of 2014, shows trends in voter turnout, and analyses the demographic makeup of the 52nd Parliament. On average there are 37 polling booths per general electorate; the highest number occurs in the Northland electorate (97), while Pakuranga and Kelston have the fewest polling booths (17 each). The largest general electorate, Clutha-Southland has an area of 37,378 sq km and 69 polling booths, or 1 booth per 542 sq km. Mt Albert is the general electorate with the highest density of polling booths – 1 booth per 0.8 sq km. Voting in the 2017 General Election began on 6 September when voters from overseas could download voting papers, vote in person at overseas posts, or vote by post.

We have an obligation to understand the current and impending change and to ensure that we are best placed to include our Young People as positively and supportively as possible. On your behalf several of us attend many meetings and Forums – usually in Wellington. Our inclusion is appreciated, as that is the best way that “we” can voice our opinions and be included. I have provided notes below from the main events thus far this term. They are in chronological order starting with the most recent: Hon. Nikki Kaye – Minister for Education The first Ministerial Cross Sector Forum was held on 25th May in Wellington. Following in Hon Kekia’s footsteps, Hon Nikki Kaye also held a meet and greet pre forum event on the evening before. This is a small group of Leaders – mainly Presidents of the various Educational Groups and some Academics. Hon Nikki conversed one-to-one with most participants.
