It was also an embodiment of Progressive Era beliefs that public works and public control of transportation infrastructure could counterbalance the growing monopoly power of railroads and other corporations. The Barge Canal system’s four main branches, the Erie, Champlain, Oswego, and Cayuga-Seneca canals, are much enlarged versions of waterways that were initially constructed during the 1820s. The Erie Canal, first opened in 1825, was America’s most successful and influential manmade waterway, facilitating and shaping the course of settlement in the Northeast, Midwest, and Great Plains; connecting the Atlantic seaboard with territories west of the Appalachian Mountains, and establishing New York City as the nation’s premiere seaport and commercial center. Built to take advantage of the only natural lowlands between Georgia and Labrador, New York’s canals were enormously successful and had to be enlarged repeatedly during the nineteenth century to accommodate larger boats and increased traffic. The Barge Canal, constructed 1905-18, is the latest and most ambitious enlargement. -

Journal of Religion & Society Volume 3 (2001) ISSN 1522-5658 Constructing Religious Meaning for Children Out of the American Civil War Kent A. McConnell, University of Virginia Abstract This study examines both the content of and mediums used to convey religious meaning to children about the American Civil War. It is particularly concerned with the “lessons” taught in popular literature, children’s books, and art during the latter-half of the nineteenth century. While these proscriptive expressions of children’s religion illustrate a number of themes, descriptive works, such as diaries and letters from both young and old, convey the ways in which children and youth attempted to reconcile those expressions of religion with what they encountered during the Civil War and Reconstruction. In particular, the research focuses on how concepts of loss and sacrifice were imbued with religious symbolism and ritualized in the lives of children in both private and public settings. Finally, the treatment is also concerned with the relationship between what one historian has called the “politicized” experiences of children from the Civil War era and ideas about reconciliation within America’s religious communities in the aftermath of war. It examines the different genres in which these themes were articulated and suggests the problematic nature a civil war posed to the Redeemer Nation. Introduction [1] In the fall of 1869, the American Baptist Publication Society sponsored a three-day convention for the Baptist Sunday-School Institute. Meeting in St. Louis, the assembly convened Protestant clerics nationwide, local dignitaries, and a large number of Sunday-school teachers and laypersons. -

Brian Linn - Brief Biography Brian McAllister Linn is professor ofhistory and director of the Military Studies Institute at Texas A&M University, where he has taught since 1989. He received his B.A. from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and his M.A. and Ph.D. from The Ohio State University. A student of American military history, he best known for his work on the U.S. military' s involvement in Asia in the first half of the twentieth century. He is the author of The US. Army and Counterinsurgency in the Philippine War, 1899-1902 (University of North Carolina Press, 1989), Guardians ofEmpire : The US. Army and the Pacific, 1902-1940 (University ofNorth Carolina Press, 1997), and The Philippine War, 1899-1902 (University Press of Kansas, 2000). His books have won several prizes, and the two most recent were both selections ofthe History Book Club. He is now working on a study of the U.S. armed forces during the 1950s, tentatively entitled Elvis 's Army. 1 The continuing revelations of deep divisions within the Bush Administration have brought home to Americans a simple truth: however great a president's popularity, he often faces resistance from his military chiefs in implementing his national security policy. Although the current internal disagreement over Iraq have garnered the most publicity, it is worth noting that even before the declaration of the War on Terrorism, there was considerable turmoil within the Administration over military issues. If press reports are accurate, Secretary ofDefense Donald Rumsfeld came into office convinced that the nation's military leaders had learned all the wrong lessons from the past; that Vietnam has left them with a concept of war that was defensive, risk adverse, and ill-suited to regaining the United States rightful place as the arbitrator of world affairs. -

GENERAL WASHINGTON AND THE REVOLUTION'S CRUCIAL CAMPAIGN Warren W. Hassler, Jr. large young man gazed intently—at the point where the —Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers the "Forks of the Ohio" The joined to form the mighty fluid avenue of advance into the Ohio country. It was 23 November 1753, and George Washington was on a mission for Governor Robert Dinwiddie to determine if the hostile French intended to show a permanent interest in the "Forks," and, if so, if it were feasible for the English colonists of Virginia to erect a fort there or nearby first.1 With a wisdom far more mature than his twenty-one years might indicate, Washington reported perspicaciously his impressions of the locality.2 This demonstration of the young Virginia officer's good eye and judgment of terrain would be repeated in the Trenton- Princeton operation of 1776-1777 — the Revolutionary War's crucial campaign. As Douglas Southall Freeman states it, Washington "was learning on the frontier what he could not have acquired in any town on the narrow coast where England's rule might be challenged." 3 So it was not as a stranger to southwestern Pennsylvania that Colonel George Washington returned to this area in 1755 as a volun- teer on the staff of English General Edward Braddock in the latter's ill-starred campaign to capture Fort Duquesne from the French and Indians. Itwas here, at the Battle of the Monongahela, that Washing- ton demonstrated the courage and resoluteness that were to mark his conduct at Trenton some twenty-one years later. -
