Rob Lanier and His Journey to Georgia State the New Men’S Basketball Coach Is Looking Forward to the 2019-20 Season 16 SPORTS GEORGIASTATESIGNAL.COM Rob Lanier and his journey to Georgia State The new men’s basketball coach is looking forward to the 2019-20 season ANDREW FREEDMAN Staff Reporter hen Ron Hunter left Georgia State earlier this year in April, the men’s basketball team was left W without their coach of the last eight seasons. His sudden departure came two days after his Panthers were blown out by the University of Houston Cougars in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Two weeks later, the Panthers got their guy. Rob Lanier was hired to become the team’s new head coach and usher in a new era of success. As a former assistant head coach with multiple Power Five schools — the University of Virginia (2005-07), the University of Florida (2007-10), University of Texas (2011-2015) and, most recently, the University of Tennessee (2015-2019) — Lanier brings plenty of experience to the new-look, youthful team. He’s seen many of his former players go to the next level, such as Grant Williams, the Boston Celtics’ 22nd overall pick in this past summer’s NBA draft. Williams is one of 11 NBA draft picks Lanier has either signed or coached in college, joining All-Stars like Bradley Beal and 2011 SEC Player of the Year Chandler Parsons. This season, Lanier begins a new chapter in his story. For the New York native, the decision to come to the Empire State of the South was an easy one. “What they were looking for was the same I was looking for, and a connection was made in the room that day that if I was their guy, I knew I was gonna take their job,” Lanier said, recalling his first meeting with Georgia State University President Mark Becker and Athletics Director Charlie Cobb. Being with a number of prominent basketball programs, Lanier knows what it takes to get his players to the elite level. This season will feature two of the biggest matchups in the history of the program: on the road against the current No. 4 team in the nation, Duke, on Nov. 15 and at Georgetown on Nov. 17. “The better job you do focusing on each challenge, the better prepared you will be going forward, so there’s plenty of time for us to turn our focus to those games,” he said when asked about those two matchups. “But when we get to that point, if we’ve taken care of our businesses each day, we’ll go into those challenges giving ourselves an opportunity to perform.” Not wasting any time, Lanier is already beginning to go on recruitment trips around the country to load up talent from the class of 2020. He noted that “there are really not a whole lot of differences” in the process at Georgia State compared to a Power Five program, such as Tennessee or Texas. “Recruiting is about building relationships with talented young men who fit the mold of your program,” he said. “Georgia State is an established program that young men know about because of the success they have had.” This is a team that also shot well from behind the three-point line last season. The Panthers finished 18th in Division I basketball last season. Although many of those key shooters played their final game in March, Lanier still has a vision for his team to be a threat from beyond the Rob Lanier is the new Georgia State men’s basketball coach and has worked PHOTO BY MATT SICILIANO-SALAZAR | THE SIGNAL with NBA talent for years, including Washington Wizards star Bradley Beal. arc. “I think we’ve got good shooting,” he said. “But I think we can excel in some other areas that might allow for us to with people who are more than just colleagues, but good said. make up some of that difference. • Kyle Anderson Forecast
You hear that Mr. Anderson? That is the sound of inevitability Agent Smith was wrong about what was inevitable for Mr. Anderson in The Matrix, was John Hollinger in signing UCLA alum Kyle 'Slo Mo' Anderson? Mr. Hollinger was a basketball analytics pioneer who went from writing Pro Basketball Prospectus books to working for the Memphis Grizzlies front office. Naturally then, we will use analytical tools to evaluate Mr. Anderson, his new contract, and forecast his 2018-19 performance to gauge if Mr. Hollinger's sense of inevitability was correct. Kyle Anderson's Strengths Defense is where Mr. Anderson stands out most. He was #16 in Defensive Win Shares (DWS) in the NBA last year, #6 in Defensive Rating, and #3 in Defensive Box +/- (per Basketball Reference). Teammates play a factor in defense certainly, but he was the highest rated Spur in DWS and DBPM, and his 101.2 just Defensive Rating was just behind Dejounte Murray's 101. He did well in other defensive stats, but they did not have him as the top stopper on the Spurs. His DWS on NBA.com had him at #29, lower than teammates #18 Murray and #7 LaMarcus Aldridge, but still as one of the 30 best defensive players in the Association. Total Defensive Rating (TDR) from Basketball Analytics author Dr. Stephen Shea takes into account Interior and Perimeter defense separately and had him ranked tied for #42 (3.9) in the league. Similar to the NBA.com number his teammates rated higher: Murray was #6 (8.9), Rudy Gay was #24 (5.5) and Danny Green was tied for #39 (4.2).

  • A Descriptive Model for NBA Player Ratings Using Shot-Specific-Distance Expected Value Points Per Possession
A Descriptive Model for NBA Player Ratings Using Shot-Specific-Distance Expected Value Points per Possession Chris Pickard MCS 100 June 5, 2016 Abstract This paper develops a player evaluation framework that measures the expected points per possession by shot distance for a given player while on the court as either an offensive or defensive adversary. This is done by modeling a basketball possession as a binary progression of events with known expected point values for each event progression. For a given player, the expected points contributed are determined by the skills of his teammates, opponents and the likelihood a particular event occurs while he is on the court. This framework assesses the impact a player has on his team in terms of total possession and shot-specific-distance offensive and defensive expected points contributed per possession. By refining the model by shot-specific-distance events, the relative strengths and weaknesses of a player can be determined to better understand where he maximizes or minimizes his team’s success. In addition, the model’s framework can be used to estimate the number of wins contributed by a player above a replacement level player. This can be used to estimate a player’s impact on winning games and indicate if his on-court value is reflected by his market value. 1 Introduction In any sport, evaluating the performance impact of a given player towards his or her team’s chance of winning begins by identifying key performance indicators [KPIs] of winning games. The identification of KPIs begins by observing the flow and subsequent interactions that define a game.

  • Duke University Leads a Diverse Pack on the Naismith Preseason Watch List
DUKE UNIVERSITY LEADS A DIVERSE PACK ON THE NAISMITH PRESEASON WATCH LIST ATLANTA (Nov. 16, 2010) – Duke University leads the 2010-11 Naismith preseason watch list with three players, the most from any college, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced today. This year’s diverse list includes the top men’s college basketball players from 44 schools around the country. The watch list was compiled by the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s Board of Selectors, which based its criteria on player performances from the previous year and expectations for the 2010-11 college basketball season. The Naismith Trophy presented by AT&T* will be awarded at the 2011 NCAA Men’s Final Four in Houston. “This year’s watch list features an incredible array of talent from across the country, which will create a tremendous challenge for our voting academy in determining the winner of the most prestigious trophy in college basketball,” said Eric Oberman, Atlanta Tipoff Club executive director. Since 2005, presenting sponsor AT&T has set the standard in allowing fans to participate in determining the trophy winner. Through the power and ease of text messaging**, fan voting will account for 25 percent of all of the final results – more than any other national college basketball award. In February, during CBS’ coverage of college basketball, the “AT&T at the Half” segment will feature a Naismith Trophy update highlighting the players in contention for the award. “AT&T is excited to watch the performances of these student-athletes in the coming season, and we look forward to following their successes,” said Jason Simpson, executive director, AT&T Corporate Sponsorships.

Estimating an NBA Player’s Impact on is Team’s Chances of Winning Abstract Traditional NBA player evaluation metrics are based on scoring differential or some pace-adjusted linear combination of box score statistics like points, rebounds, assists, etc. These measures treat performances with the outcome of the game still in question (e.g. tie score with five minutes left) in exactly the same way as they treat performances with the outcome virtually decided (e.g. when one team leads by 30 points with one minute left). Because they ignore the context in which players perform, these measures can result in misleading estimates of how players help their teams win. We instead use a win probability framework for evaluating the impact NBA players have on their teams’ chances of winning. We propose a Bayesian linear regression model to estimate an individual player’s impact, after controlling for the other players on the court.
