5 BOOK REVIEW:

The Martial Arts for Peace Series, by Dr. Terrence Webster Doyle Reviewed by Andrew Murray, YMAA News editor

Normally Jeff Pratt does our book reviews, but I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know about a series of children’s books that came to my attention: The Martial Arts for Peace series. Each of the books (Flight of the Golden Eagle, Maze of the Fire Dragon, Eye of the Hurricane, Breaking the Chains of the Ancient Warrior, and Facing the Double-Edged Sword) is written by Dr. Terrence Webster Doyle. Dr. Doyle has studied for more than 30 years, and has a black belt in the Gensei Ryu style. He also holds a doctorate degree in psychology. He has taught education, psychology, and philosophy at the university level, worked in juvenile delinquency prevention, and is director of the Atrium Society, a non-profit organi- zation which “concerns itself with fundamental issues which prevent understand- ing and cooperation in human affairs.” The books are published by the Atrium Society. The Martial Arts for Peace series is designed to give an intelligent perspective to the martial arts, and promote the virtues that martial arts training can provide—self-confidence, understanding, patience, and inner harmony. The books teach young people about the true spirit of the martial arts. Through stories, discus- sions, and questions, the books present methods of non-violent conflict resolution, and investigate the psychology behind violence. Most importantly, Dr. Doyle shows that beyond self-defense, the martial arts can teach young people self-confidence, alertness of mind, self-control, perseverance, and even kindness. For adults, including parents, teachers, martial arts instructors, and counselors, the books pre- sent strategies and skills to assist young people in learning creative alternatives to conflict. The books address both boys and girls equally, are simply written and informative, and readers are encouraged to examine and discuss every idea. The full-color illustrations are bright and engag- ing, and each book is sprinkled with instructive and reflective quotes from well-known thinkers. The question of violence in our country, and its effects on our children, is an important, com- pelling subject, as is the public perception of the martial arts. Events such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship and other ‘reality-based’ fighting competitions, martial arts movies, and children’s shows like the Power Rangers propagate the elements of martial arts (comically described in Flight of the Golden Eagle as “chop-happy, brick-breaking, chest-thumping, head-bashing, and joint-crushing”). Dr. Doyle’s Martial Arts for Peace Series is a refreshing alternative to the standard portrayal of martial arts, and I recommend the series for parents, instructors, and young people. They present good lessons in an engaging manner, and deal intelligently and realistically with the challenges of teaching peace through the martial arts. To find out more about Dr. Doyle and the Martial Arts for Peace Series, you can order the books from YMAA, or contact the Atrium Society at PO Box 816 Middlebury, VT 05753 (802) 388-0922
