'Cowboy' Cerrone
UFC® CAPS OFF EPIC YEAR WITH A LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE BOUT AS RAFAEL DOS ANJOS COLLIDES WITH DONALD ‘COWBOY’ CERRONE Las Vegas – It’ll be lights out in the Sunshine State when UFC® returns to Amway Center with a lightweight title bout as newly crowned champion Rafael Dos Anjos looks to defend his title for the first time when he meets No. 2 contender Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in a highly-anticipated rematch on Saturday, Dec. 19. In the co-main event, former UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos clashes with former STRIKEFORCE® champion Alistair Overeem in a bout that could have major title implications in the wide open division. UFC FIGHT NIGHT®: DOS ANJOS vs. COWBOY 2 will be the second consecutive championship bout to air nationally on FOX and eighth overall. After putting on one of the best performances of his career against Anthony Pettis at UFC 185, Dos Anjos (24-7, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) captured the 155-pound title, becoming the first Brazilian to hold the UFC lightweight championship. In addition to his impressive wins over former champion Benson Henderson and Nate Diaz, Dos Anjos also handed Cerrone his last loss back in 2013. The Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt will put his title on the line when he and his former foe meet again. Since dropping a decision loss to the champion, Cowboy (28-6, 1NC, fighting out of Albuquerque, N.M.) went on to dismantle the lightweight division by picking off top contenders in one of the most talent-rich divisions in the sport. -

February 2014
Wolf Pride Volume 65, Number 4 6933 Raleigh Street, Westminster, CO 80030 February 12, 2014 School shootings: a nationwide epidemic Mariela Hernandez News Editor Since the 1999 Columbine High School massacre, there have been a total of 31 school shootings in the United States, four of which occurred in Colorado (Arapahoe High School, Columbine High School, Deer Creek Junior High School, and Platte Canyon High School). Bullying and mental illness are the highest contributors to school shootings. There are usually warning signs that people can look for such as: recurrent themes of destruction, violence, hopelessness, hatred, or loneliness in a student’s writing, artwork, or conversation. Keep an eye out for unpredictable, uncontrolled, or out of proportion outbursts of anger. Most importantly, a rumor or threat needs to be taken seriously and reported immediately. Author of Rampage: The Social Roots of School Shootings, Katherine Newman stated, “It’s one thing to say, ‘I could just kill that guy,’ as a metaphor, and another to say, ‘I’ll be at school on Monday with guns.’” Bullying has become a nationwide epidemic, and it’s only getting worse. Statistics show that in 12 of 15 school shooting cases in the 1990s, the shooters had a history of being bullied. We’ve all heard about bullying many times, but we’re not taking it seriously enough. In some instances, victims of bullying have to deal with severe psycho- logical issues. No one should ever have to feel so low about themselves that they desire to hurt others. We are now living in a time where school shootings are becoming a recurring issue. -
UFC Pay-Per-View Buys and the Value of The
Innovative Marketing, Volume 13, Issue 4, 2017 Thomas R. Robbins (USA), James E. Zemanek, Jr. (USA) UFC pay-per-view buys and the value of the celebrity fighter Abstract In 2016, the Ultimate Fighting Championship was sold for a reported price of $4 billion, the highest price ever paid for a sports franchise. This was a remarkable turn-around for a promotion that 15 years earlier was saved from bankruptcy by a $2 million buyout. This turnaround was driven by the UFC’s ability to mainstream the promotion and the sport while establishing reliable revenue streams through television contracts and massive pay-per-view events. In this paper, the authors review the pay-per-view record of the UFC and analyze the extent to which it is driven by high profile celebrity fighters with broad crossover appeal. Using statistical analysis, the authors identify the top crossover celebrities and assess the economic value they generate for the UFC. They compare this to the impact generated from the promotion’s highest ranked pound-for-pound fighter and find that celebrity has far more economic value than fighting skill. Keywords: pay-per-view buys, pound-for-pound fighter, sports franchise, crossover celebrities. JEL Classification: M30, M31. Received on: 16th of November, 2017. Accepted on: 16th of December, 2017.
