RICE, TECHNOLOGY, AND HISTORY The Case of China By Francesca Bray Wet-rice farming systems have a logic of technical and economic evolution that is distinctively different from the more familiar Western pattern of agricultural development. The well-documented history of rice farming in China provides an opportunity for students to reassess some commonly held ideas about tech- nical efficiency and sustainable growth. rom 1000 to 1800 CE China was the world’s most populous state and its most powerful and productive economy. Rice farming was the mainstay of this empire. Rice could be grown successfully in only about half of the territory, in the south- F ern provinces where rainfall was abundant. There it was the staple food for all social classes, landlords and peasants, officials and artisans alike. The more arid climate in the north was not suited to rice; northern farmers grew dry-land grains like wheat, millet, and sorghum for local consumption. But the yields of these grains were relatively low, whereas southern rice farming produced sufficient surpluses to sustain government and commerce throughout China. Vast quantities of rice were brought north to provision the capital city— home to the political elite, the imperial court, and all the state ministries—and to feed the huge armies stationed along the northern frontier. People said that the north was like a lazy brother living off the generosity of his hard-working and productive southern sibling. A 4-point Likert-scale questionnaire was used as the instrument. A trial test was conducted and tested for reliability and a value of 0.75 was obtained from the test. The instrument was further subjected to face validation. The population comprised of 1553 language teachers – English, Literature, Igbo and French and out of this number 240 teachers were selected using simple random sampling technique and it was done to reflect male and female teachers – 120 males and 120 females. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while Analysis of Covariance ANCOVA was used to test the hypothesis at an alpha level 0.05 of significance. Result obtained from the data indicated that (1) Most material teaching aids are not available in schools (2) teaching of essay writing requires application of effective material teaching aids. -

Gutenberg Publishes the World's First Printed Book The exact date that Johannes Gutenberg published his first book - The Bible - isn't clear, although some historians believe the first section was published on September 30, 1452. The completed book - according to the Library of Congress - may have been released around 1455 or 1456. What is for sure is that Gutenberg's work, published on his printing press, changed the world. For the first time, books could be "mass produced" instead of "hand copied." It is believed that 48 originals, in various states of repair, still exist. The British Library has two copies - one printed on paper, the other on vellum (from the French word Vélin, meaning calf's skin) - and they can be viewed and compared online. The Bible, as Gutenberg published it, had 42 lines of text, evenly spaced in two columns: Gutenberg's Bible was a marvel of technology and a beautiful work of art. It was truly a masterpiece. The letters were perfectly formed, not fuzzy or smudged. They were all the same height and stood tall and straight on the page. The 42 lines of text were spaced evenly in two perfect columns. The large versals were bright, colorful and artistic. Some pages had more colorful artwork weaving around the two columns of text. Most historians think not: Gutenberg must have been pleased with his handiwork. But he wouldn't have known then that this Bible would be considered one of the most beautiful books ever printed. -

L’armée impériale japonaise a fait main basse sur une large partie de la côte chinoise. En ces temps de tristesse, la menace de l’antique prophétie plane, celle de l’invincible dragon noir Gongong qui doit venir anéantir les hommes quand le désespoir et la haine règneront. Yin, petite fille d’une dizaine d’années est élevée par son grand-père pêcheur, Liu. Un soir, alors que Liu sort en mer, Yin se faufile sur le bateau. Soudain une bête puissante se débat dans ses filets : un dragon d’or, blessé, que Yin convint son grand-père de cacher et de soigner… Une décision qui les emmènera bien plus loin qu’ils ne le pensaient. La bande dessinée mêle le fantastique et l’historique. On est tenu en haleine par les différents rebondissements et l’on veut croire jusqu’au bout à la reconnaissance du dragon d’or. Le suspens est là jusqu’à la dernière page qui ouvre sur une terrible prophétie. Les deux héros, la petite Yin et son grand père Li, nous font découvrir la dure condition des pauvres pêcheurs de Shanghai sur fond de début de guerre mondiale . Les dessins déclinent toute une palette de jaunes et de gris et rendent bien le mystère et l’ambiance de l’histoire. Le scénario très alerte, aborde en toile de fond quelques grandes valeurs humanistes et épisodes historiques. -

St. Clair Street, Toledo, Ohio 43604 419-241-2400 20northgallery.com — [email protected] Craig Fisher & Dan Hernandez 20northgallery.com — [email protected] July 7 – September 30, 2017 An exhibition of new and existing works featuring fantastical, intricate and meticulously rendered images of mystical, otherworldly themes—all incorporating classical symbolism to reference contemporary thought, culture and technology The intaglio etchings and aquatint prints by Craig Fisher blend classic architectural and landscape imagery that transitions from mechanical to organic to supernatural, on both macro and micro scale. The acrylic and inkjet transfer paintings by Dan Hernandez intermingle the iconic imagery of European Renaissance and classical Asian painters with early video game design, portraying figures engaged in vibrant and energetic conflict. Despite the dramatic differences in media, visual style and subject matter, the works of these two distinguished area artists juxtapose like themes of science & technology with spirituality, as well as the combination of old and new media, to explore the metaphysical concept of the “otherworld”—the varying layers of existence between humankind’s experience of the “real” world and the world of belief. This combination creates an intriguing, thought-provoking and unquestionably beautiful exhibit. 1 Craig Fisher Toledo, Ohio Artist Biography Craig Fisher received his Bachelor of Arts in fine art from The University of Toledo, School of Design in 1976, following two years of additional study in The Netherlands at the Pascal College, Zaandam, North Holland. He has worked in various positions as a technical Illustrator, graphic designer and, more recently, as a concept artist.
