The Bulldogs rushed for a season-best 378 yards and four in the victory over Mercer. RADIO 37:15 - The Citadel offense continues to control the football as the Bulldogs held the Luke Mauro (play-by-play) ball for 37:15 against Mercer. The Bulldogs had the ball for 23:14 in the second half. The Ted Byrne (analyst) Citadel continues to lead the country in time of possession at 37:51 per game. 23 - Quarterback Brandon Rainey set a new single-season record for touchdowns accounted for by a quarterback. The junior now has 23 touchdowns (14 rush/9 pass), GAMEDAY AFFILIATES passing the old record of 22 set by Jack Passander in 1969. Charleston 9 - The Bulldog defense held Mercer to just nine yards rushing in the second half. The WQNT (92.1-FM/102.1-FM/1450-AM) Citadel allowed just 61 rushing yards in the game. Columbia 8 - A-Back Remus Bulmer has accounted for eight touchdowns on the season. The WQXL (100.7-FM/1470-AM) graduate transfer has six rushing touchdowns and two receiving. He has accounted for Sumter five touchdowns over the past three weeks. WDXY (105.9-FM/1240-AM) on this date... In 2013, Darien Robinson rushed for three touchdowns to help The Citadel erase a 17-0 deficit and defeat Samford, 28-26, inside Johnson Hagood Stadium. Robinson’s third of the game gave the Bulldogs a 28-20 lead early in the fourth quarter. Samford would score with just over one minute to play, but the attempted two-point conversion failed. Duo Earns Weekly Honors Outside linebacker Marquise Blount and kicker Jacob Godek were honored by the for their efforts against Furman. Blount was named the defensive player of the week, while Godek was tabbed the special teams player of the week. The honors are the second of the season for each.

Knocking Off Top 10 Opponent The Bulldogs went on the road and knocked off a Top 10 opponent for the first time since 2016 with a 27-10 victory over No. 8 Furman. It is the 24th overall victory against a ranked opponent.

Thompson’s approach to developing a complete team was on display in his first season in charge. The Bulldogs ranked seventh in FCS in pass defense, led by SoCon interception champion Dee Delaney, and eighth in the country in total defense, improving by more than 50 yards from the previous season to allow only 302.7 yards per game. The Bulldogs also ranked first in the Southern Conference with only 30 touchdowns allowed in 12 games, an average of 2.5 per game.

Special teams played a crucial role in The Citadel’s success with a dangerous return game, led by SoCon punt return champion DeAndre Schoultz, clutch kicking and one of the best coverage units in the conference.

The Bulldogs faced a tall task in Thompson’s second season as The Citadel boasted one of the nation’s youngest offensive lines. The group helped pave the way for the nation’s second-best rushing attack, including rushing for over 400 yards in back-to-back wins over Chattanooga and VMI.

The 2017 team also featured a defense that led the SoCon in total defense, rushing defense, and was among the league leaders in scoring defense until the season’s final week.

Eight Bulldogs earned All-SoCon honors during the 2017 season, including first team honorees, center Tyler Davis and safeties Kailik Williams, and Aron Spann III. Davis would be named All-American by
