We canceled our Easter Breakfast, we had only one service on Easter Sunday. We changed the format and length of both the Maundy Thursday and Good Friday services, and we canceled the Easter Vigil. This Photo by Unknown Author But 2021 is a new year, and along with it returns our traditions and services. So, let me offer you a brief description of the Lent and Easter season and what we will be doing. First, we are currently in the 40-day period called “Lent.” Lent is a time of both self-reflection and repentance, but also of celebration and giving thanks. We spend this time more deeply and intentionally acknowledging to God that we are sinful people and dependent on His mercy in our lives. And we also give thanks for His grace given in Jesus who suffered and died for us. The first Sunday of the Holy Week period is “Palm Sunday”, or what has more recently been named, “Passion Sunday.” The new name, Passion Sunday, is given because of the increased number of people who do not attend the Holy Week services where they hear the readings of Jesus’ passion and death. Palm/Passion Sunday now includes these readings so that those who do not attend during the week might still be exposed to this most important time in the life of our Lord. The next important series of days, known as the “Triduum,” begins with Maundy Thursday. The Triduum is actually one single worship service, starting on Thursday night and ending late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. If you pay close attention to the three days of the Triduum, you’ll notice that the pastor says the Invocation ONLY on Thursday night and does not speak the Benediction until the end of the service on Saturday. This is to show that it is one big worship service. Maundy Thursday, or “Command Thursday” commemorates both our Lord’s washing of His disciples’ feet and His institution of His Last Supper. Some churches practice foot washing on this night; we will not. Good Friday, or “Holy Friday” commemorates our Lord’s suffering and death on the cross and his burial. The Easter Vigil celebrates that period of time between Jesus’ burial and His triumphant resurrection early on Sunday morning and is where the Paschal Candle has its roots and use. But since I don’t expect you to stay awake until 2 in the morning on Sunday, we do the Easter Vigil a bit earlier in the evening on Saturday, and then offer elements of the Easter Vigil on Sunday during the Sunrise Service for those who did not attend the Easter Vigil. My encouragement for you is this: if it is not your habit or discipline to attend the special services of the Christian Church (Lent midweek, Holy Week, Triduum), try to make an effort to attend this year. Jesus was born, suffered, died and rose again for you, and the retelling of this most historic and universe-changing story is as important for you today as it was when you were a child. God bless you this Lententide and Eastertide! Amen. – Pastor Carlson MARCH 2021 St. Paul’s Circular Hello again everyone and happy March! Two months down in 2021 already! It is crazy that we are already into the Lent season and Easter is about five weeks away. Time sure flies by. As we approach the one-year mark of COVID really ramping up in the US, and as we continue in this Lent season which focuses on reflection and repent- ance, it is intriguing to look back on all that has hap- pened during this year and due to COVID. As they say, hindsight is 2020 (which is ironic since most, if not none, of us really seemed to know what to do in 2020). This past year was filled with hardship, difficult deci- sions, many mistakes, and unfortunately, lots of hate. As if COVID was not enough to divide us, the politi- cal season added to the tension and hate in our coun- try, between strangers, friends, family, and even church members. A year ago, this month, another major divide in our country opened and kept growing throughout the year. That being said, as we spend time in this season of Lent reflecting and repenting, let us think about the past year. Let us ask forgiveness for the mistakes we made and those we judged, spoke against, and treated without love. It is easy to blame others for the prob- lems in this fallen world, but we are just as guilty and sinful. However, let us not forget who we look to and what comes at the end of this season of Lent: Jesus, His (poem included in our new cookbook) death and resurrection, and the Easter celebration. As the popular verses from John state, “For God so THE NEW 2020 ST. PAUL’S COOK- loved the world (the whole world and everyone in it), BOOK is at the PRINTERS! that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in WE ARE TAKING ORDERS NOW, ON LINE and at him should not perish but have eternal life. • Holy Saturday the Vigil of Easter
Holy Saturday The Vigil of Easter And they were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” Mark 16:3 Holy Saturday ~ The Vigil of Easter Holy Saturday ~ The Vigil of Easter Many Lutherans assume the Easter Vigil is "new" because they don't remember participating in the service in younger years. On the contrary, the Easter Vigil is actually one of the oldest formalized services of the Christian Church. Already in A.D. 190, Melito, bishop of Sardis, preached a sermon entitled, "On the Passion," in which he described the Vigil of Easter in use at that time. In a fuller description, a Christian named Egeria described the Vigil of Easter used in Jerusalem in A.D. 385. According to her description, the use of this service was a long-standing custom. Christians today are often unfamiliar with the Great Vigil because it fell into disuse during the Middle Ages. While the immediate goals of the Reformation were to restore the Gospel to the current practice of the day, since the Easter Vigil was largely not practiced, it was not of primary focus for the reformers. (Pittelko, Lutheran Worship Notes, 1985) Interestingly however, a variety of miscellaneous practices have been assumed by our churches that stem from the Vigil. Three examples include the practice of an "Easter Sunrise Service," the annual creation and use of a "Paschal Candle," and the joyful refrain heard throughout Christendom on Easter, "Alleluia, Christ is risen. He is risen indeed. Alleluia!" The historic service was a true vigil in every sense of the word.

  • Easter Sunrise Service
Here is a simple outline for a sunrise service with guidance for expansion and suggested hymns. It can be used in a variety of ways and setting, both for home use and on-line. Easter Sunrise Many United Methodists and other Christians in the United States look forward to gathering at sunrise on Easter morning to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. In some communities, United Methodists gather with other Churches to hold a service. Often such services take place outside, weather permitting. Getting up in the dark of early Easter morning is a challenge for some, but that challenge is part of what makes Easter Sunrise compelling. It is not possible for us to hold large or even small gatherings this year during social distancing. However, Easter morning will still arrive, and most people in any place or situation may rise early to greet the Risen Christ. What follows is a brief order and followed by a set of suggestions for a sunrise service that fits a wide variety of needs. Core of the service: 1. Sing or recite a resurrection hymn and end with a prayer. 2. Read scripture, including an account of the open tomb: • Matthew 28:1-10 or John 20:1-18. 3. Silent or spoken reflection on the scripture reading. 4. Brief Prayer, extemporaneous or using a form below. 5. Closing hymn, sung or spoken out loud. 6. Benediction. Except where noted, these acts should be spoken or sung out loud. Depending upon the local situation, these acts may be expanded in several ways: 1.
