ENFORD CHISENBURY GOLF DAY – 1 AUGUST 2008

The inaugural Enford Chisenbury Golf Day got off to a great start on a sunny but windswept Golf Course. Despite the windy conditions some excellent golf was played by the 10 competitors.

The Enford team ran out worthy winners with 111 Stableford points. The Enford Team were spearheaded by John Poole-Warren, Rob Coultard and Frank Horsford.

The best round of the day was by Denis West for Chisenbury with 38 Stableford points. A fine round considering the conditions.

Many thanks to the Red Lion for hosting the prize giving in the evening.

2009 . Provisional date for next year's golf day is Friday 26th June 2009. Venue . Not yet known but unlikely to be St Andrews.

3 ENFORD NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2008 ENFORD PARISH HALL AND READING ROOM

This is a letter for all parishioners in Enford, Coombe , Chisenbury and the other smaller hamlets in our parish.

You may not be aware that Enford Parish Hall and Reading Room is an old hall and is in great need of refurbishment. At the present we are or should I say Enford Parish Council is applying for a grant, hopefully to do the refurbishment. In the event of our not receiving a grant, however, there is every possibility that the Hall will have to close. Since the centenary of the Parish Hall is almost upon us it would be a great shame to lose one of the remaining focal points of the parish. We are now looking for help from our parishioners, anyone you know that is a tradesman or anyone just wanting to help in general. We will need electricians, painters, chippies or anyone just wanting to contribute in any way at all with help or funding.

As I said, the Hall has been around for many years so we hope it will not be allowed to go without a fight.

So please keep looking in your Newsletter for future letters about the Hall and if you are able to give up any of your time please let us know

Thank you Katrina Knight Enford Parish Hall & Reading Room Committee.

THANK YOU

First of all I would like to say thank you to Jane for organising the jumble sale that she arranged on 13 th September. Also thank you to Kirsty, Janice, Michelle, Anthea, Coralie, Jo, Jacqui and Maureen for their help. Also to Samantha, Harry, Lauren and Holly and to anyone I have left out. I would like to say a very big thank you to Delia Steele for baking cakes and for baking the cake for ’Guess the Weight of the Cake’. The winner for this was Tracy Bailey who correctly guessed the weight of 6llb 6ozs. The winner for ‘Guess the Mystery Ingredient’ was Janice Goddard guessing cardamom seeds. I want to thank Marg for making chocolate rice crispies and chocolate cornflakes. Thanks also to all who came along and supported the Jumble Sale. It is folks like you that keep these old building alive. We made on the day £268.87. Once again thank you to everyone that helped and supported us. 6 ENFORD NEWSLETTER HIGHWAYS NEWS OCTOBER 2008

Hello Enford Residents. The C32. With reference to the last Highways News article July 2008 Enford News Letter. We successfully secured a meeting with Martin Cook the Senior Traffic Engineer and Mr Peter Hanson the Divisional Highways Manager of Wiltshire County Council Highways Department. This took place at 8am 8/8/2008 at the “T” junction Enford Hill/Long Street. The meeting took in Enford Coombe and East Chisenbury. It was a constructive meeting and I thank the residents and Parish Councillors for turning out so early in the morning. W.C.C Highways are now aware of the problems that we are facing along the C32 and said that they will come back to us with suggestions on what can be done with the available funds they have, it is possible that we may have to offer some funds out of the precept for whatever they come up with if this is so it will be placed before the Parish Council for discussion. The A345 Road Surface. We are still complaining about the road surface from Enford through to Netheravon and Figheldean. Netheravon Parish Council have now joined the campaign by sending a letter to W.C.C. Highways. Just recently Enford managed to get the message across on B.B.C Radio Wiltshire whilst the Leader of Wiltshire County Council Jane Scott was telling everyone how good the Unitary Council was going to be and fairness would be top of the agenda. Enford made the point of how come all the roads around Trowbridge were in pristine condition when the A345 here at Enford was in an appalling condition, other listeners made remarks on the radio about poor road surfaces and pot holes not being repaired in the south and why was the North of the County getting better treatment than the South. Will it change I doubt it, but then again I could be wrong. The A345. Weed Growth. We have reminded Wiltshire County Council Highways that areas along the A345 are now causing problems for drivers pulling out onto the A345 and also road signs are now being obscured by foliage. We trust that this will be attended to as soon as possible before we have a road accident. Community Speed Watch. Enford have now carried out three watches at the top of Enford Hill (A345). We have 7 volunteers who have been trained by the Wiltshire Police and we have six more who have offered their services. The Scheme is working well and is slowing everyone down who are passing through Enford at the time we are there. A considerable amount of motorists have been observed exceeding the speed limit through the zone. As said before this Scheme is not to trap people or to spy on them it is to get everyone to observe the rules of the road and “Slow Down” while passing though the 30MPH Zone here at Enford. The idea is to make Enford a safer place to live. We trust that everyone will support the Volunteers and the Parish Council on what they are trying to achieve for everyone, if we actually prevent one accident taking place and get people who pass through Enford at speed to “Slow Down then we would have attained what we set out to do. Some of the problems above have been taken on board by the Pewsey Area Community Planning Partnership and have been very helpful in putting pressure where it is required. You may wish to know that Enford Parish is a founder member of this partnership. Safe motoring to all Stan. W. Bagwell. Enford Parish Council (Highways) 5th September 2008

8 ENFORD NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2008

9 ENFORD NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2008 ALL SAINTS ENFORD CHURCH Dear Friends

I had the privilege in September to join a pilgrimage to Walsingham, a very beautiful village in North Norfolk. There were mostly Roman Catholics in our party but there were also a number of Church of England members which was the reason for my going. Since 1061 AD, a shrine has existed where it is reported that a lady by the name of Richeldis, received a message from the Virgin Mary to build a shrine where prayers could be offered and people could deepen their faith by being with God and apart from the general rush of daily life. We took forty five sick people and double that number of helpers. Our pilgrimage had two aims. Firstly, to visit the shrine which is similar to the house in Nazareth where Jesus grew up and learned the values of family life. Secondly, to see a Holy Well which Richeldis is reported to have discovered where spring waters flow. Like so many places of pilgrimage it has suffered. Henry VIII did his best in 1538 to destroy its beauty. Since 1922, after restoration work, it has been visited by thousands of pilgrims and beautiful churches of many denominations have been built which gives it that ecumenical flavour. As well as the peace and the holiness of the place, the fun and joy that we gained from the company of one another was overwhelming and spoke to me of the strong need to relax and enjoy being away. A pilgrimage is a very real privilege to laugh and share together and make lasting friendships. There is, of course, a cost involved as in money but it is worth the effort to get way from the routine of everyday life and have time to renew your batteries and to pray. I do hope that you will make a pilgrimage one day.

Colin Fox

A Prayer

We are pilgrim people and our destiny is heaven. As we travel towards the light of Christ may we encourage one another through life’s rough seas and stone filled paths.

Amen
