In 1962, the Royal Commission on the Police formally acknowledged HMIC’s contribution to policing. HMIs are appointed by the Crown on the recommendation of the Home Secretary and report to HM Chief Inspector of Constabulary, who is the Home Secretary’s principal professional policing adviser and is independent of both the Home Office and the police service.
