If you’ve ever had problems with the traditional view of hell this will be a safe place for you to come with your questions and doubts. We’ll be looking at the various biblical texts that deal with hell and how Christians past and present have understood them. Feel free to invite others who you feel might benefit from this discussion. Announcements

PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION

Lord, open our hearts and minds by the power of your Holy Spirit, that as the Scriptures are read and your Word is proclaimed, we may hear with joy what you say to us today. Amen.

Hearing God’s Word GENESIS 17:15-22

20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard you: I will surely bless him; I will make him fruitful and will greatly increase his numbers. He will be the father of twelve rulers, and I will make him into a great nation. 21 But my covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you by this time next year.” 22 When he had finished speaking with Abraham, God went up from him.

READER: The Word of the Lord. ALL: Thanks be to God. Hearing God’s Word HEBREWS 11:13-16

13 All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth. 14 People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. 15 If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.

HEBREWS 11:1-12 C.S. LEWIS These things—the beauty, the memory of our own past—are good images of what we really desire; but if they are mistaken for the thing itself they turn into dumb idols, breaking the hearts of their worshipers. For they are not the thing itself; they are only the scent of a flower we have not found, the echo of a tune we have not heard, news from a country we have never yet visited.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR VERSE 1: BRIDGE: When you were here before Oh, she's running out the door Couldn't look you in the eye She's running out You look like an angel She'll run, run, run run Your skin makes me cry You float like a feather In a beautiful world You're so very special I wish I were special CHORUS: But I'm a creep I'm a weirdo What the hell am I doing here I don't belong here CREEP HEBREWS 11:13-16

Hearing God’s Word MEAN GIRLS - JOSHUA TREE VERSE: I believe in the kingdom come When all the colors will bleed into one Bleed into one Yes, I’m still running You broke the bonds And you loosed the chains Carried the cross of my shame Of my shame You know I believe it But I still haven’t found what I’m looking for

I STILL HAVEN’T FOUND WHAT I’M LOOKING FOR My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road, though I may know nothing about it. Therefore will I trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone. THOMAS MERTON 1 For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation.

Psalm 62:1

Silence Take a moment to pause in silence and tend to God’s still small voice. A PRAYER OF CONFESSION Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. [PAUSE FOR REFLECTION] We are truly sorry and we earnestly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; Confession that we may delight in your will, In the hands of grace, confession and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. becomes for us a gift to help realign Amen. ourselves with God’s good intentions for us. ASSURANCE OF PARDON There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set us free from the law of sin and death… And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in us, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to our mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in us.

ALL: Thanks be to God. Confession

In the hands of grace, confession becomes for us a gift to help realign ourselves with God’s good intentions for us. The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.”

In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you Eucharist proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. The term Eucharist literally means “good gift.” In gathering around the bread and 1 CORINTHIANS 11:23-26 the cup we celebrate together God’s good gift of himself to us. God is my Shepherd I won't be wanting, I won't be wanting He makes me rest In fields of green, with quiet streams Even though I walk Through the valley, of death and dying Eucharist I will not fear Come receive the bread and cup. When Cause You are with me, You are with me you have been served return to your seat with elements in hand. When everyone has been served we will eat and drink together.

Take some time (before or after receiving the elements) to recognize The House of God, Forever those whom Christ has called to join Jon Foreman you around his table. Your Shepherd's staff Comforts me You are my feast In the presence of enemies Surely goodness Will follow me, follow me Eucharist In the house of God forever Come receive the bread and cup. When you have been served return to your seat with elements in hand. When everyone has been served we will eat and drink together.

Take some time (before or after receiving the elements) to recognize The House of God, Forever those whom Christ has called to join Jon Foreman you around his table.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread.
