These last survivors of the Bornean subspecies of Sumatran rhinoceros are believed to remain only in the interior forests of Sabah, an area known as the "Heart of Borneo". The rhinos are so elusive that the first-ever still photo of one was captured only last year. "These are very shy animals that are almost never seen by people and so this video gives us an amazing opportunity to spy on the rhino's behaviour," said Wildlife Director Mahedi Andau. The rhinos in Sabah spend their lives in dense forest where they are rarely seen, which accounts for the lack of any previous photographs of them in the wild. The video camera trap that captured the footage was developed by Stephen Hogg, Head of Audio Visual at WWF-Malaysia.

It suggests that blogs perform three main functions, which help make a democracy more meaningful: blogs as fifth estate, blogs as networks, and blogs as platform for expression. First, blogs function as the fifth estate performing checks-and-balances over the government. This function is expressed by blogs’ role in the dissemination of information, providing alternative perspectives that challenge the dominant frame, and setting of news agenda. The second function of blogs is that they perform as networks. This is linked to the social-networking aspect of the blogosphere both online and offline. Blogs also have the potential to act as mobilizing agents. The mobilizing capability of blogs facilitated the mass street protests, which took place in late- 2007 and early-2008 in Malaysia.

We aim to broaden the scope for cross-national comparison by looking at climate change reporting in Malaysia – an emerging economy in the global South facing developmental tensions common to many, specifically an ambitious national climate change agenda in the face of an economy largely reliant on the extraction and export of primary commodities. Our questions are: How is climate change framed in Malaysian media? How do Malaysian narratives compare to those found elsewhere? How do climate change and development narratives interact in a ‘second tier’ emerging economy? And lastly, what do these interacting narratives say about the salience of neoliberal and North-South perspectives on climate change and development? To answer these questions, we undertook a content analysis of climate action stories published over a three-year period (2009-2011) in five English-language news sources. In addition to a high proportion of environmental-framed articles across all the news sources, our findings show that climate change has been framed as both a multi-scalar responsibility and a positive opportunity for two key stakeholders in development, i.e. neoliberal market forces and geopolitical actors keenly interested in restructuring the international political economy along lines reminiscent of the new international economic order (NIEO) demands of the 1970s. We label the key themes emergent from our analysis as climate capitalism and green nationalism (neither of which are unique to Malaysia) while demonstrating that debates about palm oil are particularly illustrative of the interaction of these themes in the Malaysian context.

    Media Ownership and News Coverage of International Conflict Matthew Baum Yuri Zhukov Harvard Kennedy School University of Michigan matthew [email protected] [email protected] How do differences in ownership of media enterprises shape news coverage of international conflict? We examine this relationship using a new dataset of 591,532 articles on US-led multinational military opera- tions in Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan and Kosovo, published by 2,505 newspapers in 116 countries. We find that ownership chains exert a homogenizing effect on the content of newspapers’ coverage of foreign pol- icy, resulting in coverage across co-owned papers that is more similar in scope (what they cover), focus (how much “hard” relative to “soft” news they offer), and diversity (the breadth of topics they include in their coverage of a given issue) relative to coverage across papers that are not co-owned. However, we also find that competitive market pressures can mitigate these homogenizing effects, and incentivize co-owned outlets to differentiate their coverage. Restrictions on press freedom have the opposite impact, increasing the similarity of coverage within ownership chains. February 27, 2018 What determines the information the press reports about war? This question has long concerned polit- ical communication scholars (Hallin 1989, Entman 2004). Yet it is equally important to our understanding of international conflict. Prevailing international relations theories that take domestic politics into account (e.g., Fearon 1994, 1995, Lake and Rothschild 1996, Schultz 2001) rest on the proposition that the efficient flow of information – between political leaders and their domestic audiences, as well as between states involved in disputes – can mitigate the prevalence of war, either by raising the expected domestic political costs of war or by reducing the likelihood of information failure.1 Yet models of domestic politics have long challenged the possibility of a perfectly informed world (Downs 1957: 213).

    Media and belonging to the nation in Sabah, East Malaysia Dr. Fausto Barlocco Paper presented to the EASA Media Anthropology e-Seminar, 8-22 September 2009 http://www.media-anthropology.net/workingpapers.htm Abstract Starting from the thesis that Malaysia has successfully been ‘built’ as a nation by the state as well as ‘materialized’ by other means, this paper attempts to define the extent to which the state has become a source of identity for a minority indigenous group, the Kadazandusun of the Bornean State of Sabah. The analysis of various cases showing the reaction of Kadazan villagers to the development propaganda and the discourses present in the media demonstrates that, while Malaysia has indeed materialised among the Kadazandusun through the involvement in the national educational and political system and mediascape, the government propaganda is rejected on the basis of its perceived Malayising agenda, imposing to indigenous peoples to either become like the majority or be marginalised. On the other hand, consumption practices, and the media messages encouraging them, constitute a national community of consumers, but on the other encourage identification with a global consumer culture and of novel practices and subjectivities. The Kadazan of the Penampang district of the Malaysian State of Sabah, located on the island of Borneo, are a sub-section of a larger ethnic grouping, which constitutes the largest indigenous group of the State, variously referred to as Kadazandusun (KD), Dusun, Kadazan and Dusunic peoples1. In the 1950s the Kadazan of Penampang, and in particular an urbanised, mission-educated native elite defined ‘Kadazan intelligentsia’ by Roff (1969), were at the forefront of a process of creation of a modern ‘Kadazan’ culture, based on a process of ‘objectification’ , the transforming implicit customs into a conscious and explicitly defined set of ‘traditions’(see Winzeler, 1997: 202).
