2012 San José 2012 symposium planning guide Name Contact Info in case of loss PRESIDENT'S WELCOME San José • June 8-10, 2012 Dear Woodturning Friends, On behalf of the American Association of Woodturners Board of Directors, welcome to the 26th AAW international symposium. Our annual meeting constitutes the largest woodturning expo under one roof anywhere in the world. This symposium is the culmination of another year of advancement for the AAW – one that finds the organization at 14,000 members strong and poised for significant growth ahead. The artistic and technological advances that have reshaped woodturning since AAW’s founding in 1986 will be on full display here in San José. The AAW has truly become a global institution, with more than 1,030 international members, many of whom will be with us in San José this week, coming from dozens of countries. We deeply value the perspectives that our international members provide and look forward to expanding their ranks in years ahead. For 26 years, the AAW has been the premier advocate for the ancient craft and art of woodturning, an activity that has seen phenomenal growth during the last quarter century by both part-time hobbyists and studio professionals. While the association publishes a world-class journal, maintains a topical website, and supports hundreds of local chapters with a variety of services, it is at this symposium that members see the creative and inspiring demonstrations and can experience hands- on interactions with the world’s best woodturners. We are delighted to bring the AAW annual symposium to the heart of Silicon Valley this year. The AAW Board strives to select symposium sites that meet our logistical and budget demands and that encompass each region of the United States. Our intention is to meet in locations during a 5-year cycle that will allow all AAW members to be within driving distance of a symposium. In 2013, we meet in Tampa, and in 2014 we will convene in Phoenix. We welcome your suggestions of other venues to consider in future years. Finally, one of my personal favorite activities at the symposium is watching the eager kids who participate in our Youth Room turning activities. A primary mission of the AAW is to educate and promote the craft to new turners, and there is no better place to witness this in action than by seeing first-hand the excellent hands-on instruction that youngsters get in the Youth Room. I encourage you to drop in and see for yourself. At a time when kids are paying plenty of attention to computer screens, it’s nice to see some of them creating with gouges and skews as well as pixels and apps. As always, we welcome comments on how we can improve your symposium experience. All Board members and AAW staff are eager to ensure that we produce for our membership the best possible woodturning symposiums — year after year. Please take the time to introduce yourself to the Board and staff. Thank you for coming.
