Annotation My thesis " The nationalist movements in Europe during the crisis " deals with the issue of nationalism and its expressions in various political movements. The own definition designed for purpose of the thesis is represented in the first chapter. The following two chapters include nationalist movements before World War II and current nationalist movements. Also historical events and specific phenomena such as economic crisis, globalization, immigration and modern media are reflected. Next, it reveals parallels of movements in history and now in the fourth chapter by using analysis of documents and texts of historical and contemporary literature and internet resources. The aim is to search and find relationships between the popularity of the nationalist movement before the Second World War and today, but also to form an overview of the current nationalist movements in Europe, including circumstances of their creation and power of their influence. The outcome is also a concept in the fifth chapter which offers an alternative to the existing multicultural approach called the transcultural approach. Finally, the thesis also shows a short project for teaching this issue at school education. Keywords National identity, patriotism, nationalism, the dangers of nationalism, nationalist movements, the crisis of the turn of the century, the First World War, the Great Depression, Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, the Second World War, globalization, the current crisis of the financial system, immigration, European Union, modern media, current nationalist movement, multicultural education and transcultural education. 14 Race, Religion, and Afghan Refugees’ Practices of Care in Greece Zareena A. Grewal Introduction: Muslims and the Politics of Recognition in Greece On 7 June 2019, Greek Education and Religious Affairs minister Costas Gavroglou addressed a crowd of about one hundred Muslims, journalists, and state offi cials at the “inauguration” of the government’s partially con- structed, purpose-built mosque in Athens: “Athens now has a dignifi ed place of worship for Muslims whether they are citizens or migrants, refugees, or visitors. The right to pray to the god you believe in, like the right of a child to go to school, does not depend on the circumstances under which some- one arrived here. Everyone has these rights. They are non-negotiable hu- man rights” (Speed 2019). By 2019, there were nearly 300,000 Muslims in Athens, yet it remained the only European capital without an operational mosque. After the offer of Saudi Arabia’s King Fahd to build an exqui- site mosque in Athens was refused, a 2006 presidential decree committed the Greek government to build the fi rst mosque in the city since Ottoman rule ended in 1821. Numerous delays halted construction, including in 2014 when contractors refused to take on the project out of fear of violent attacks from members of the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party; Muslims are the most frequent targets of their racist attacks (Palivos 2018: 272). • Golden Dawn and the Deafening Silence of Europe
Analysis Golden Dawn and the deafening silence of Europe Jerome Roos, editor, ROAR online magazine With a neo-Nazi party on the rise in Greece, it seems that even a Weimar-like scenario might be tolerable for EU leaders insisting on further austerity. “For Peace, Freedom and Democracy. Never Again Fascism. Millions of Dead Remind Us.” Those are the words carved into a memorial stone underneath the Austrian house where Adolf Hitler was born in 1889. “Never Again.” This was the uniform slogan resounding across Europe after the full scale of Nazi atrocities became known in the wake of World War Two (WWII). The cosmopolitan project of European integration was founded upon this promise. Never again would fascists and warmongers be allowed to tear the Old Continent and its people apart. One day it may therefore be considered one of history’s greatest ironies that, as EU leaders were busy deciding who would collect its Nobel Prize for “the advancement of peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights,” those same leaders remained woefully silent when a recent survey indicated that the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party now polls third [1] in Greece, at 14 percent. This is a showing comparable to that of Hitler’s National Socialist German Workers’ Party in 1930, three years before rising to power and setting the world on course for WWII. For clarity’s sake: the comparison made between National Socialism and Golden Dawn is by no means an exaggeration. Golden Dawn is an extreme-right organisation whose emblem [2] deliberately resembles a swastika; whose leader publicly gave the Nazi salute [3] upon his election to Parliament; whose magazine [4] regularly features articles and pictures of the Führer himself; whose spokesman recently assaulted [5] two female rivals on a live TV show; whose manifesto pledges to drive all immigrants [6] out of hospitals and all non-Greek children out of kindergartens; and whose MPs actively participate in racist pogroms [7] against Greece’s immigrant population.

  • Vigilantism Against Migrants and Minorities; First Edition
11 VIGILANTISM IN GREECE The case of the Golden Dawn Christos Vrakopoulos and Daphne Halikiopoulou Introduction This chapter focuses on vigilantism in Greece. Specifically, it examines the Golden Dawn, a group that beyond engaging in vigilante activities is also the third biggest political party in the country. The Golden Dawn is distinct from a number of other European parties broadly labelled under the ‘far right’ umbrella in that it was formed as a violent grass-roots movement by far-right activists, its main activities prior to 2012 confined to the streets. It can be described as a vigilante group, which frequently uses violence, engages in street politics, has a strong focus on community-based activities, and whose members perceive themselves as ‘street soldiers’. Since 2013 a number of its leading cadres, who are also members of the Greek parliament, have been undergoing trial for maintaining a criminal organization and other criminal acts including murder and grievous bodily harm. The progressive entrenchment of this group in the Greek political system has raised a number of questions about its potential implications on the nature of democracy and policy-making. This chapter examines various dimensions of the Golden Dawn’s vigilante activities. Following a brief overview of the Greek socio- political context, it proceeds to examine the party’s ideology, its organizational structure, its various operations, communications activities and relationships with other political actors and groups in Greece. The political, social and economic environment Political violence and the history of vigilantism in Greece Vigilante and paramilitary activities have a long tradition in Modern Greek history.

GENERAL ELECTIONS IN GREECE 6th May 2012 European Elections monitor Great Uncertainty just one Month before the next Greek General Elections Corinne Deloy (with Stellina Galitopoulou) On 31st October last Prime Minister George Papandreou (Panhellenic Socialist Movement, PASOK) announced the organisation of a referendum on the rescue plan for Greece approved by the Euro- Analysis pean Union on 27th October in Brussels. The latter aimed to help Greece pay off its debts but obliged 1 month before the country to submit to economic supervision and to implement a stricter austerity regime. The the poll announcement was the source of stupor and indignation in Greece and across all of Europe – it sent the European, American and Asian stock exchanges into disarray and surprised the financial markets. “It’s suicide”, declared Michalis Matsourakis, chief economist at the Greek Alpha Bank, who perceived an attempt on the part of George Papandreou to break out of his solitude and the political crisis that was undermining the country as he pushed the opposition parties, which until now had categorically refused to support the strict austerity measures taken by the government, to adopt a position on the European plan, in order to calm the social protest movement that went together with a sharp decline in living standards. The Prime Minister, who was finding it increasingly difficult to find support within his own socialist party and the ministers of his government, had already suggested to the opposition that they create an alliance in the shape of a government coalition in June 2011. The right however, rejected this proposal.

Additionally, this paper investigates the underlying psychological tactics and modern-day issues when it comes to the strategies implemented by various neo-fascists to increase the membership numbers of their fringe- extremist groups. Keywords: Neo-fascism, Fascism, Social Issues recent trend in today’s globalist society would be the unprecedented rise in political parties (and other organizations) which adhere to various extreme ultra-nationalist A ideologies. Additionally, one should note the recent mainstream acceptance of such groups. Despite most of these groups coming from drastically different nations and cultures, all of them could be observed to be slight variations of the same extremist philosophy, namely a modern evolution of fascism (referred to as neo-fascism). Contradictory to popular belief, neo-fascism is not an exclusively white-supremacist belief system, rather it is commonly followed by many extremist elements present in various nationalist ideologies across the globe. A good example of said ideology being followed by an historic non-white regime would be The Japanese Imperial Empire from the World War II era. In other words, modern elements of neo-fascism could be considered as an extremist interpretation of populism.

The significant parliamentary representation that GD, a Greek pro-Nazi party, characterized as party-militia,[1] managed to attain, has given rise to serious concerns both in Greece and abroad.[2] Golden Dawn The “People’s League-Golden Dawn” was founded on February 14, 1983, by Nikolaos Michaloliakos who came out of the milieu of the anti-Semite Constantine Plevris and his “4th of August Party” (1965-1977, named after the date Ionnis Metaxas imposed dictatorship). In September 1984, Michaloliakos took over the leadership of the youth group of the “National Political Union” (ΕPΕΝ), for a short time. This party demanded the release of the imprisoned protagonists of the 1967 military coup (Kapetanyannis: 203). The People’s League of Golden Dawn was initially a magazine, (1980-1984, re-issued in February 1986) which was founded by adopting the paradigm of a national- socialist cultural club in a Greek version.

Golden Dawn does not limit its extremism to rhetoric, however—party members have been involved in hundreds of acts of violence against immigrants and leftists across Greece. Currently, the Greek government is cracking down on Golden Dawn by using criminal investigations and prosecutions of key party leaders to curtail the party’s activities and funding.

  • The Case of Golden Dawn
THE TERRORIST ACTIVITY OF NEO-NAZI ORGANISATIONS IN EUROPE: THE CASE OF GOLDEN DAWN By Kevin Ovenden The Fuhrer of Golden Dawn, of N. Michaloliakos Fuhrer The 1. Introduction 2017 has seen a further worrying growth of far right and fascist forma- tions in several European countries. May brought the advance of Marine Le Pen into the second round of the French presidential election. The following month the Front Na- tional increased its presence in the French National Assembly, though fell short of the numbers to form an official parliamentary group. In September the Alternative for Germany (AfD) made a major breakthrough to enter the Bundestag for the first time, winning 12.6 percent of the national vote. The party has gone through a succes- sion of radicalisations since its formation as a free-market Euroscep- tic party. It now has a hardened anti-Muslim central ideology, which organises its propaganda and programme. Most concerning is that its growth as an electoral force has been accompanied by the increas- ing weight of its «fascisising wing». Entry into first regional-state and now the federal parliaments has not provided a «domestication» of its message. Far from it. At one end of the spectrum of radical right wing formations in Eu- rope – ranging from racist populists to fascists – stands Golden Dawn in Greece. It is a neo-nazi party. Its leader, Nikos Michaloliakos, says that Golden Dawn hails from «the seeds of the defeated army of 1945», that is from the beaten armed forces of the Third Reich. It was the third party in the Greek parliament elected in Septem- ber 2015.
