  • Ruth Prawer Jhabvala's Adapted Screenplays
Absorbing the Worlds of Others: Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s Adapted Screenplays By Laura Fryer Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of a PhD degree at De Montfort University, Leicester. Funded by Midlands 3 Cities and the Arts and Humanities Research Council. June 2020 i Abstract Despite being a prolific and well-decorated adapter and screenwriter, the screenplays of Ruth Prawer Jhabvala are largely overlooked in adaptation studies. This is likely, in part, because her life and career are characterised by the paradox of being an outsider on the inside: whether that be as a European writing in and about India, as a novelist in film or as a woman in industry. The aims of this thesis are threefold: to explore the reasons behind her neglect in criticism, to uncover her contributions to the film adaptations she worked on and to draw together the fields of screenwriting and adaptation studies. Surveying both existing academic studies in film history, screenwriting and adaptation in Chapter 1 -- as well as publicity materials in Chapter 2 -- reveals that screenwriting in general is on the periphery of considerations of film authorship. In Chapter 2, I employ Sandra Gilbert’s and Susan Gubar’s notions of ‘the madwoman in the attic’ and ‘the angel in the house’ to portrayals of screenwriters, arguing that Jhabvala purposely cultivates an impression of herself as the latter -- a submissive screenwriter, of no threat to patriarchal or directorial power -- to protect herself from any negative attention as the former. However, the archival materials examined in Chapter 3 which include screenplay drafts, reveal her to have made significant contributions to problem-solving, characterisation and tone.

  • Hollywood Abroad: Audiences and Cultural Exchange
Hollywood Abroad: Audiences and Cultural Exchange By Melvyn Stokes and Richard Maltby (eds.) London, British Film Institute 2004. ISBN: 1-84457-018-5 (hbk), 1-84457-051-7 (pbk). 164 pp. £16.99 (pbk), £50 (hbk) A review by Martin Barker, University of Wales, Aberystwyth This is the fourth in a line of excellent books to have come out of two conferences held in London, on Hollywood and its audiences. This fourth collection deals specifically with the reception of Hollywood films in some very different counties and cultural contexts. The quality and the verve of the essays in here (they are all, without exception, beautifully written) is testimony to the rise and the potentials of the new historical approaches to audiences (which has, I am pleased to see, sedimented into some on-going cross-cultural research projects on local film exhibition histories). I recommend this book, unreservedly. Its contributors demonstrate so well the potential for many kinds of archival research to extend our understanding of film reception. In here you will find essays on the reception of the phenomenon of Hollywood, and sometimes of specific films, in contexts as different as a mining town in Australia in the 1920s (Nancy Huggett and Kate Bowles), in and through an upmarket Japanese cinema in the aftermath of Japan's defeat in 1946 (Hiroshi Kitamura), in colonial Northern Rhodesia in the period leading up to independence (Charles Ambler), and in and around the rising nationalist movements in India in the 1920-30s (Priya Jaikumar). It is important, in understanding this book, that we pay attention to the specificities of these contexts.

  • Jill Nelmes Critical Appraisal - Phd by Publication
Jill Nelmes Critical Appraisal - PhD by publication Introduction: This critical appraisal is based on an overview of my published research on the subject of the screenplay between 2007 and 2014 when my most recent monograph, The Screenplay in British Cinema (BFI, 2014) 1 was produced. The aim of my research has been twofold: to bring to academic attention the depth and breadth of screenplay writing as a written form, particularly within British Cinema, and to argue that the screenplay can be studied as a literary text. My interest in researching the screenplay arose from the realisation that the screenwriter and the screenplay have received little attention within the academy. My early research argues that the screenplay exists as a separate entity from the film, while being a vital part of the film production process, and that the screenplay is a written form to which textual analysis and the comparison of different drafts of a screenplay can be applied (see Nelmes, 2007; 2009). A case study of my own screenplay was published which discusses the complex nature of the development and rewriting process and concludes that problem solving is a key part of that process (Nelmes, 2009). As a result of this article I began to look at other screenwriters who have made a significant contribution to the film industry; my research on the screenwriter Paul Laverty and his re-writing of The Wind that Shakes the Barley was published in the Journal of British Cinema and Television (2010a). The research for this led to the discovery of the BFI Special Collections and I received a British Academy grant to study the re-writing process and the draft screenplays in the Janet Green collection (Nelmes, 2010b).

Armendariz-Hernandez, Alejandra and Gonzalez-Lopez, Irene (2017) Roundtable : the position of women in post-war Japanese cinema (Kinema Junpo, 1961). Film Studies, 16(1), pp. 36-55. DOI: https://doi.org/10.7227/FS.16.0004 © 2017 Author(s). Published by Manchester University Press. 1 Roundtable: the Position of Women in Post-War Japanese Cinema Alejandra Armendáriz-Hernández (Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, Madrid) Irene González-López (University of London) Introduction Western film thinking, by which we mean European and North American, dominates the canonical histories of cinema and film theory, as well as the academic discipline of Film Studies. The hegemony of Western thought is particularly evident and problematic in the study of non-Western cinemas, such as that of Japan, which have traditionally been mere objects over which some scholars have applied or demonstrated the effectiveness of Western theories without any critical interrogation of the power relations at work in the production of knowledge. As studied by Yoshimoto Mitsuhiro, 1 Japanese cinema occupies a complex position in this asymmetrical relationship between Western theory and non-Western cinemas and cultures.2 Through the authorial figures of Japanese directors such as Kurosawa Akira (1910-1998), Mizoguchi Kenji (1898-1956) and Ozu Yasujirō (1903-1963), Japanese cinema was one of the first non-Western national cinemas to be appreciated and theorised in the West.3 Moreover, the study of Japanese films ‘played a significant role in the establishment of film studies as a discrete discipline’,4 hence legitimising the idea of cinema’s universal value and consolidating the auteuristic approach in film studies.
