In January 2017, 53 youngsters joined over two dozen officers and area sports celebrities at the Dome in Glenside for hours of fun, including soccer games, football drills, Frisbee golf and bean-bag toss. Plus, the kids got hands-on experience with a SWAT remote-controlled robot and fingerprinting equipment. Finally, always-popular K9 teams wowed everyone with vivid demonstrations. The next PAL event offered youngsters a choice between watching the movie Finding Dory or playing basketball with some of CTPD’s finest, followed by a pizza party for all at the Towers at Wyncote in March 2017. To protect the men and women who protect Cheltenham Township, volunteer firefighters receive injury and life insurance coverage as well as Workers’ Compensation. These policies, as well as all training and equipment, are provided free of charge. Less tangible benefits include gaining a unique résumé builder, lifelong friendships and an exciting volunteer experience unlike any other in the world. Even those who are not up to the challenge of actual firefighting are still welcome to join the team.
