The Richard Wall House Museum local history collection, 1894-2010, is comprised of newspaper clippings, research notes, reproduction photographs, scrapbooks, maps, ephemera, and a small amount of personal papers from local families. The subjects of the collection include local churches, estates, families, schools, and events. Biography/History "Richard Wall's house stands at the entrance to Wall Park [in Cheltenham Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania]. The original section of the house is dated 1682 and additions were completed in - Page 3 - Richard Wall House Museum local history collection 1727 and 1800. It is the most historic building in the Township and, until 1978, was the oldest house in continuous residence in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Wall name was lost when Sarah Wall, Richard's granddaughter, married George Shoemaker. The Shoemaker name is another name mentioned quite frequently in association with early development in the Township. Their daughter-in-law developed the Shoemaker Mill on the Tookany Creek, and Shoemakertown (now part of Elkins Park) developed around it." Bibliography: Cheltenham Township. "History." Accessed August 28, 2012. http://tinyurl.com/oxa88ex Scope and Contents The bulk of this collection is subject files compiled by the Museum, consisting of newspaper clippings, research notes, reproduction photographs, scrapbooks, maps, ephemera, and a small amount of personal papers from local families. The subjects covered by the collection include local churches, estates and families, schools, and events. For example, there are files relating to the crash of the Titanic, the Widener family, and Lynnewood Hall; local film director Richard Lester (1954-1967); and Cheltenham High School The collection also includes small amounts of primary source materials from various people and organizations, such as: annual reports and by-laws of the Women's Club of Wyncote (1943-2012); a small amount of papers of former residents of the Wall House, the Fleck family (circa 1900-1935); the wedding and honeymoon scrapbook of Lillian Shriver (1942); Bissinger tax and estate records (circa 1900); and nine recorded oral histories of local residents (1979-2002). Some documents and ephemera are on display throughout the building, notably items relating to the First and Second World War. Lastly, there are also files relating to the preservation of the Richard Wall House, as well as the interpretation of its history. These files include tour scripts, historic structure reports, museum newsletters, cultural resource surveys, and historic resource surveys.     Landscape and History at the Headwaters of the Big Coal River Valley An Overview By Mary Hufford Reading the Landscape: An Introduction “This whole valley’s full of history.” -- Elsie Rich, Jarrold’s Valley From the air today, as one flies westward across West Virginia, the mountains appear to crest in long, undulating waves, giving way beyond the Allegheny Front to the deeply crenulated mass of the coal-bearing Allegheny plateaus. The sandstone ridges of Cherry Pond, Kayford, Guyandotte, and Coal River mountains where the headwaters of southern West Virginia’s Big Coal River rise are the spectacular effect of millions of years of erosion. Here, water cutting a downward path through shale etched thousands of winding hollows and deep valleys into the unglaciated tablelands of the plateaus. Archeologists have recovered evidence of human activity in the mountains only from the past 12,000 years, a tiny period in the region’s ecological development. Over the eons it took to transform an ancient tableland into today’s mountains and valleys, a highly differentiated forest evolved. Known among ecologists as the mixed mesophytic forest, it is the biologically richest temperate-zone hardwood system in the world. And running in ribbons beneath the fertile humus that anchors the mixed mesophytic are seams of coal, the fossilized legacy of an ancient tropical forest, submerged and compressed during the Paleozoic era beneath an inland sea.1 Many of the world’s mythologies explain landforms as the legacies of struggles among giants, time out of mind. Legend accounts for the Giant’s Causeway, a geological formation off the coast of Northern Ireland, as the remains of an ancient bridge that giants made between Ireland and Scotland.

    HISTORY and DEVELOPMENT of the SCHOOL DISTRICT of CHELTENHAM TOWNSHIP by Alexander W. Scott Cheltenham Elementary 1983 I dedicate this paper to my late beloved wife Florence Oeters Scott - C.H.S. '44. Her love and encouragement were always a strength to our family. She lived her entire life in Cheltenham Township and always spoke enthusiastically about its schools and the quality of the education she received while attending Wyncote Elementary, Thomas Williams Junior High and Cheltenham High School. For nearly 300 years the residents of Cheltenham Township have regarded the education of their young people as one of the prime responsibilities of the community. This attitude began with the early Quaker settlers in William Penn's new Province, when on April 5,1697, John Barnes deeded land to the Cheltenham Friends. This 120 acre grant was "for and towards the erection of a Meeting House for Friends and towards the maintenance of a school." The following December, the Cheltenham Friends asked the Philadelphia Quarterly Meeting for financial assistance to carry out the provisions of Barnes' deed. Although few written records of those early school days exist, it is believed that prior to 1697 the Cheltenham Friends held Meetings and school in a log house. However, it is a known fact that from 1683 Richard Wall's house, originally made of wood, was used as a Meeting House. It could be possible that his house was also used as a school for the few children in the area during those early years. The name of the first teacher at Abington Friends School (the land grant was in Abington Township and hence the Meeting's new name) is unknown, but the Pennsylvania Archives of 1701 mention a Jacob Taylor who was "concerned in a school at Abington."Since the majority of our early settlers were Quakers, the Abington Friends School remained the only school for the children of the Cheltenham area for over 40 years.
