Many new banks were founded in the second half of the nineteenth century in response to the need for ever more finance for the booming growth of business in Victorian times. HSBC plc acquired the Midland Bank in 1992. Since 1836, the first year that "Midland" was included in the title there have been the following changes of name. 1836 Birmingham & Midland Bank. 1850 Birmingham & Midland Bank Ltd. 1891 London & Midland Bank Ltd. 1898 London City & Midland Bank Ltd. 1918 London Joint City & Midland Bank Ltd. 1923 Midland Bank Ltd. 1982 Midland Bank pic. 1999 HSBC pic. HSBC has many historic connections with the City of Leeds. The earliest link is with the private banking firm of Perfect and Co, which was established in Pontefract in about 1800 and opened an office in Leeds in 1814. This firm was acquired in 1834 by the newly established Yorkshire District Bank, which used the Perfect and Co. premises in City Square as its head office. In 1843 the bank was reconstructed as the Yorkshire Banking Company, which was acquired by the London City & Midland in 1901. The HSBC network also incorporates the business of the Exchange and Discount Bank and the Leeds & County Bank. Mr. John James Cousins founded the Exchange and Discount Bank in 1860. He was the first banker to set up in business in Park Row and according to one local historian 'His staff was one small boy in buttons' Nearby, the Leeds & County Bank had been established in 1862 and had opened a number of branches in the Leeds area.

Between 1890 and 1966, only twelve Ca- nadian charteredbanks failed; six of these failures resulted in losses to the deposi- tors. No bank failures occurredafter the suspensionof the Home Bank of Canadain 1923. Explanationsfor the relative stability of Canadianbanking have focused on the structureof the system, particularlythe economies of scale and portfolio diver- sification achieved by the large branch banks in Canada (Friedmanand Schwartz 1963; Haubrich1990) and the creationof a governmentrediscount facility in 1914. Some (Bordo 1986; Shearer, Chant, and Bond 1984; White 1983) suggestthat the Canadianfederal authoritiesand the CanadianBankers Association (CBA) implic- itly guaranteedbank deposits by arrangingmergers.     BANK MERGERS: IS BIGGER BETTER? Introduction In January 1998, the Bank of Montreal and the Royal Bank of Canada announced plans to merge and create one superbank. A few months later, in April, the Toronto Dominion Bank and the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce announced similar plans. The proposed bank mergers caught many people off guard, including Minister of Finance Paul Martin. In a Macleans interview, Martin said, "Just because they decided to get into bed together doesnt mean that I have to bless their union." Martins message seemed to be that Ottawa, not the banks, would decide the future of banking in Canada. "There will be no mergers in the banking sector until we are convinced that [it] is what is best for Canadians, and we will not be stampeded into making that decision." According to the banks, the proposed mergers were a natural response to a changing and highly competitive global marketplace. Mergers, they said, provide a way of maintaining a strong Canadian presence in the banking industry. Certainly, recent technological advances have dramatically changed the manner in which the financial services industry conduct their business, and the above- mentioned banks feel, therefore, that they need to be bigger to compete and to have a substantial presence in the global banking community. Martin himself acknowledged the changed nature of banking when he said, "If you look back at banking five years ago, you might as well look back two centuries." While the proposed bank mergers brought attention to the challenges facing Canadas banks, these challenges are not peculiar to the banks alone.

Earlier this month, the world’s third largest container shipping port – Ningbo, in mainland China – suspended operations for two weeks after a worker tested positive for COVID-19. Although berthing operations restarted this week, over 47 container shipping vessels were waiting to dock at the outer Zhoushan anchorage as at 25 August 2021, up from 12 a year prior. Nearby ports have also seen waiting times lengthen as vessels were rerouted following the recent disruption. And it is not just ports that have been disrupted. Factories across many Asian economies have been impacted by the spread of COVID-19, which could have implications for Asian trade flows of autos and textiles, as well as ripple effects for producers in other parts of the world reliant on inputs from Asia. For example, Ford Motor Co recently announced it would temporarily suspend production at a US plant because of a chips-related part shortage due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Malaysia, while more than 30% of Vietnamese textile and garment factories were closed at the beginning of this month due to the pandemic, according to the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association.

He is also a member of the Canadian Bankers Association’s Executive Council, the Business Council of Canada, Business Council of Alberta and the Alberta Economic Recovery Council. Chris is married with twin daughters. Played rugby for Team Canada in 1979, 1989 and 1990. He also played for UBC and club teams in Victoria, Vancouver and Edmonton where he won multiple provincial championships as well as the national city championships.
