Young Elphinstone Institute University of Aberdeen Scotland Abstract The blackening and the hen party are two pre-wedding rituals for women. The blackening has its roots in a feet washing ceremony, which although once widespread across Scotland is now generally found in rural areas in Northern Scotland. The hen party is a more recent urban phenomenon, enjoying unprecedented popularity. These two rites of passage appear to co-exist happily. Shukla (2005) notes that “successful transitions between life stages are not only socially relevant, they are personally significant milestones, visibly marked by a change in bodily presentation.” This paper will explore that “change in bodily presentation” by examining the role costume plays in the blackening and hen-party rituals. There is a huge variety in what the bride and her attendants wear, where the ritual dressing takes place, and at what point during the proceedings. I will show that the purpose of dress and adornment in each of these rituals is varied, from singling out the bride and making a statement, through to establishing group identity. Furthermore, the purposes have changed through time, significantly in the case of the hen party. Setting the scene his paper explores the role played by costume in two pre-wedding rituals practiced by women in Northern Scotland, the blackening and hen party, and how that role has changed since the 1940s. Jaclyn Geller’s Here Comes the Bride: Women, Weddings, and the Marriage Mys- tique expanded Ingraham’s survey of the wedding’s increasing commodification and argued that with the unprecedented cost of living in the United States, gifts and cash received at wedding-related festivities serve as powerful incentives to heteronormativity. SPRING AND SUMMER The majority of bachelorette parties take place in the spring (43%) and summer (35%). 2-3 DAYS More than half of females are celebrating their bachelorette for at least two days, with 1 in 3 celebrating for three or more days. 10 ATTENDEES On average, 10 people attend a bachelorette party, extending to friends and family outside of the wedding party. OUTFIT ON POINT Half of brides-to-be wear something special on their bachelorette party as opposed to only 19% of men on their bachelor party. What Do Bachelor Parties Look Like Today? SPRING AND SUMMER Like bachelorette parties, the majority of bachelor parties take place in the spring (43%) and summer (42%). A BIT LENGTHIER Bachelor parties are slightly more likely (over 60%) to be two or more days, with 1 in 3 celebrating for three-plus days. 8 ATTENDEES Bachelor parties tend to be a bit smaller than bachelorette parties with eight guests. VEGAS Men are nearly twice as likely to visit Vegas for a bachelor party than females for a bachelorette party. While 1 in 10 have a joint celebration with their spouse, there are some differences between today’s bachelor and bachelorette parties.
