Minahan* You put a tattoo on yourself with the knowledge that this body is yours to have and enjoy while you’re here. You have fun with it, and nobody else can control (sup- posedly) what you do with it. —Don Ed Hardy1 INTRODUCTION The practice and ritual of tattooing human skin has existed in all parts of the world and in most cultures for thousands of years.2 The modern his- tory of tattooing in Western cultures can be traced to the voyages of Captain James Cook to the South Pacific, where sailors encountered various Polyne- sian tribes among which tattooing was, and remains today, an important cul- tural practice and spiritual ritual.3 When these sailors, many of whom had adorned their bodies with tattoos, returned to Europe, they ignited an inter- est in tattooing known as the “tattoo rage,” which spread through nineteenth- century Europe. -

Ink Master: Angels': New, All-Women Series Is "Inspiring," Showrunner Says by Amanda Buckle June 2017
https://mic.com/articles/178923/ink-master-angels-new-all-women-series-is-inspiring- showrunner-says#.q1nb1r7bX 'Ink Master: Angels': New, all-women series is "inspiring," showrunner says By Amanda Buckle June 2017 Ink Master alums Ryan Ashley, Kelly Doty, Nikki Simpson and Gia Rose are here to stay. The tattoo artists proved to be top competitors in season eight of the Spike reality series and in March, the network announced that the women would be returning for their own one-hour special, Ink Master: Angels. On Monday Spike revealed that the special has now been turned into a series. Ink Master: Angels will consist of 10 episodes and debut this fall. The series will follow Ryan, Kelly, Nikki and Gia as they "travel the country and go head-to- head with some of America's most talented tattoo artists." The twist is that the competitors facing the four women will be fighting for a spot on season 10 of Ink Master, which will debut in 2018. The announcement doesn't come as a big surprise as Ink Master pulled in a 57% female audience for its eighth season — the largest number of female viewers in franchise history. The eighth season also crowned Ryan Ashley as its first female winner. For Ink Master showrunner and executive producer Andrea Richter, the idea to bring the women back came together "pretty quickly." "It's interesting having been there and filmed them for the first time and seeing all of them meet for the first time and bond," Richter said. "I think it was an obvious choice. -

The Prestige Talent: Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Michael Caine, David Bowie, Scarlett Johansson, Andy Serkis, Rebecca Hall. Date of review: Thursday the 16th of November, 2006 Writer/director/editor: Christopher Nolan Classification: M Duration: 130 minutes We rate it: Five stars. The Prestige is a film that will generate strong reactions for different reasons: some cinemagoers will find it, as I did, one of the most fascinating, exhilarating and compelling films of the year; others may find its dialogue-heavy, convoluted narrative too much to cope with on first viewing. The Prestige is indeed a challenging and thought-provoking film, but this, to me, is one of its primary assets, and is the mark of a sophisticated and intelligent piece of art. With the holiday season and its peppering of by-the-numbers, yawn-inducing blockbusters just around the corner, The Prestige is that most beautiful of contrasts: a stunningly well-conceived film that reminds us of the great power of storytelling itself. A film about two Victorian-era stage magicians and their intense, life-altering rivalry, The Prestige tells an intoxicating story in masterful and constantly surprising style. Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman star as two magicians working on the London stage at the end of the 19th Century. Ambitious and talented performers, both men want to earn the title of the most accomplished magician in England. They begin their careers working together, but after a tragic accident that irrevocably alters the relationship between the two men, they become bitter rivals. As their separate attempts to conceive of the perfect magic trick become more dangerous and more complex, both men are driven to extremes of behaviour that will draw them towards other complex and mysterious figures; ultimately, the pursuit of the perfect illusion will have unimaginable consequences in the real lives of both men. -
Local Tattoo Artist Competing on Ink Master, Premiere Tonight
Local tattoo artist competing on Ink Master, premiere tonight Posted by TBN_News On 06/23/2015 Spike TV’s hit original series “Ink Master” returns for a sixth season starting Tuesday, June 23 at 10 pm ET/PT, and this time it’s best to ‘know your enemy.’ Eighteen tattoo artists from around the country will battle it out in permanent ink and sometimes with each other for a $100,000 grand prize, an editorial feature in Inked and, of course, the bragging rights title of ‘Ink Master.’ This season it’s not just about the rivalries the artists create during the competition, each contestant comes with their own personal tattoo rival – their master or apprentice. But before the season premiere, tune in an hour earlier at 9pm ET/PT for an elite battle of tattoo artist heavyweights as four “Ink Master” winners collide in a first-time-ever special to prove they are the “best of the best.” Egos clash as Steve Teft ( Season 2), Joey Hamilton (Season 3), Scott Marshall (Season 4) and Jason Clay Dunn (most recent winner of Season 5) compete in extreme challenges and create insane art to capture a second and the penultimate “Ink Master” victory. In the season premiere entitled “Meet Your Maker” at 10pm ET/PT, former tattoo apprentices battle their masters to prove that they are the best. For the first tattoo, the playing field is leveled when the Judges blind critique the tattoos. In addition, one of the most controversial artists returns and a twist in the competition has the contestants rattled. -

A young woman about to be married discovers that any one of three men could be her father. She invites all three to the wedding without telling her mother, Donna Sheridan, who was once the lead singer of Donna and the Dynamos. In the meantime, Donna has invited her back-up singers, Rosie Mulligan and Tanya Wilkinson. Starring Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Amanda Seyfried, Dame Julie Walters, Christine Baranski. School of Rock After being kicked out of his rock band, guitarist Dewey Finn faces a mountain of debts and depression. He shares an apartment with an old band member, Ned Schneebly, who is now a substitute teacher. Dewey accepts a job as a substitute teacher at a snobbish private elementary school where his attitude and hijinx have a powerful result on his students. He learns they are talented young musicians, and he decides to form a rock band with them to win the $10,000 prize money in a local band contest. Once Dewey wins a competition called "Battle of the Bands", the prize money would solve his financial problems and put him back in the rock music spotlight. -
Than Digital Makeup: the Visual Effects Industry As Hollywood Diaspora
More Than Digital Makeup: The Visual Effects Industry as Hollywood Diaspora By Sarah K. Hellström Department of Cinema Studies Master’s Thesis 15 hp Master Course 30 hp, VT 2013 Supervisor: Dr. Patrick Vonderau If I hear one more person who comes up to me and complains about [how]‘computer-music has no soul’ then I will go furious, you know. ‘Cause of course the computer is just a tool. And if there is no soul in computer-music then it's because nobody put it there and that's not the computers role, it's the role of the songwriter. He puts down his soul in the song if he wants to. A guitar will never write a song and a computer will never write a song, these are just tools.i - Björk Title: More Than Digital Makeup: The Visual Effects Industry as Hollywood Diaspora Author’s name: Sarah K. Hellström Supervisor: Dr. Patrick Vonderau Abstract This thesis assesses the marginal field (niche unit) of visual effects while taking into account visible and invisible vfx in virtual and actual geographies in Hollywood movies as part of industry-level studies, all the while seeking to bridge the gap between traditional, theoretical approaches of cinema studies and practitioner experience in the context of production culture. The focus of this essay remains on the many temporal aspects of production processes that identify vfx film production as chief, and vfx for television as subsequential. Encouraging scholars to consider a previously limited and repeatedly mislabeled area by demonstrating the pandemic presence of effects and its workers as a form of Hollywood diaspora, this thesis also seeks to demonstrate the need for involvement by means of scholar-practitioner methodologies.
