23 50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION EXCITING TIME FOR MEMORIAL PARK! Creigiau 23 held it’s 50th Anniversary Dinner at the Hilton Hotel on Saturday 16th December. It was attended by one hundred and sixty people including members, ex members, guests, wives and partners. It was joy to see three of the original members as guests in the audience, including Mr. Arwel Ellis- Owen, the first ever speaker. The philanthropic society was formed back in 1969 after an independent group of twenty three local gentlemen met at the Creigiau Inn. It has recently become a registered charity in it’s own right.

Work is now complete on the first phase of improvements - we hope you like it so far. The weather has been terrible; it will take some time for the grass to fully recover around the new units, so please take care and try to avoid the muddy areas. The Precept is the amount of money the council requests from its residents via council tax. It is collected for us by Cardiff and paid to PCC in April. We invest it in the CCLA (Churches, Charities and Local Authorities) fund to earn interest and then draw down what we need during the year. The services provided by Cardiff continue to be cut, and PCC is planning to take over some of these where we can. We would like to maintain and, ideally, improve standards in our communities. Cardiff is disposing of some of its public open space so PCC is exploring what Cardiff land we could maintain or take as a community asset transfer into PCC ownership. This will need careful consideration about the staff and machines needed to cut much more grass within the PCC area. We produced an Annual Report for 2018-19 that set out what PCC does, how and why and what value it adds to your community. We linked it to the goals of the Well-being of Future Generations Act as we are now encouraged to do by . These groups will enable neighbourhoods to be more play friendly. The project will also support young people aged 14-19 to become volunteer Community Play Ambassadors through training, qualifications and placements in playwork settings, enabling them to facilitate neighbourhood-based play opportunities. Using existing resources and qualifications, Play Wales will deliver playwork training and ongoing mentoring to the Ambassadors during the first two years of the project. The Ambassadors will be connected with community members who will support the creation of rich and varied play opportunities locally. By doing this the project, Play Wales hopes it will engage with over 500 children. The Ambassadors will have a unique opportunity to act as advocates for play and, by working with supportive adults, will have a tangible impact on the opportunities to play in the project communities. Play Wales is looking to establish one of its Ambassadors Projects in Creigiau (and it would be open to the wider Pentyrch, Gwaelod & Capel Llaniltern community). First steps will be to have a small gathering of interested people to talk about the training and volunteering aspects. If this is of interest, please contact [email protected]

We’re sorry but some paths in the reserve are closed due to the presence of Ash Dieback. Our detailed assessment of the number and health of the ash trees (and the risk they pose to site users) determined that making enough trees safe would cause too much harm to the nature reserve, especially the species that depend on ash. It would also reduce our ability to learn about any resilience these local trees might have. Therefore, with wildlife in mind, we have decided to leave the trees standing but that means we reluctantly have to close public access to some paths. This will be reviewed regularly. We apologise for the inconvenience. Spring is one of the best times to visit Coed y Bedw but like with all woodlands choose a still day as woods should not be visited in windy conditions. Conceived and created in Pentyrch, Fresh Air Fridays is now a national organisation with nearly 20 facilitators across the UK. Working with companies and charities, as well as individuals, we are a coaching organisation that supports people like you to look after your mental and emotional wellbeing so you can lead a life you love. All our programmes run outside with groups of people. Many people come because they want some down time. Others come because they are having a particular challenge, like not sleeping, stress or anxiety at home or work, feeling frustrated in a relationship or isolated in their life. The support and skills people find being part of Fresh Air Fridays, addresses these challenges. This is what a couple of participants have to say: “I am more open minded in the way that I think, I am less judgmental of other people and find it much easier to take a step back in my own life when I am faced with a tough situation. I also feel I am armed with the tools to build the life that I want, one where I’m in control." “It's changed my attitude; not just to stresses in work, but also my big-picture view of my own life. The tools I now have, support my resilience and general wellbeing.” If any of the above resonates with you, or you are looking for wellbeing solutions in your organisation then please visit: www.freshairfridays.co.uk email [email protected] 18 &කඍඑඏඑඉඝ/ඉඌඑඍඛ&කඑඋඓඍගඕඉඓඍඛ The funding progress for Comic Relief ගඐඍ&ඉකඌඑඎඎඑඉඖ1ඍඟඛ Wales is rigorous and required formal Creigiau Cricket Club successfully community support, which came from applied for a grant from Comic Relief Creigiau 23 and from Pentyrch Wales to fund coaching courses for Community Council. All parties are attempting to come to terms with the interpretation and impact of the new legislation and recent case law. The PSA’s objective continues to be to try and negotiate a satisfactory agreement without the matter having to be referred to the Land Tribunal by the mobile phone operator. After signs in late 2019 that the mobile phone operator intended to take the matter further there has been no further developments in recent months. Any further notices will also be published on the Planning PENTYRCH TENNIS CLUB section of the Pentyrch Community Council website and The 2020/21 season annual membership for the Pentyrch on the council’s Facebook page. 25 Winter into Spring with Garth Gardeners Spring into gardening action – this is the time for planning, with the vegetation dormant, you can see the structure and design bones of your garden. You can plan too, move, Snowdrops at Welford Park prune, discard old or buy new plants. Incorporate the principles of catering for wildlife that we heard about in our January meeting. This can all be done from the warmth of your home. Look out of the windows, upstairs windows will give you a plan view of the garden. Then get out the books and catalogues and dream up new schemes by the fire with a nice cuppa. The most important thing about spring planting is not, when, what or how, but where. To raise the spirits on a dismal winter day, plant hellebores, primroses, snowdrops, spring bulbs etc., within sight of the kitchen window so you can appreciate the flashes of colour without having to go outside into the inclement weather. We have some fascinating talks coming up on: - fungus, gardening magazine editing, and irises, culminating in May with yet another opportunity for socialising at the AGM. Details of all the meetings and activities can be found on our web site at garthgardeners.wordpress.com As always, we would love to see you.
