An overview of Nepenthes in the Philippines is presented. Four new species, Nepenthes extincta sp. nov., N. kitanglad sp. nov., N. kurata sp. nov. and N. leyte sp. nov. are described and illustrated from the Philippines and placed in the Nepenthes alata group. An updated circumscription and key to the species of the group is provided. Delimitation and comparison with the Regiae group is given. All four of the newly described species are assessed as threatened using the International Union for the Conservation of Nature 2012 standard, and one, N. extincta sp. nov. is considered likely to be already extinct due to open-cast mining. Logging and conversion of forest habitat are thought to be the main threats to the other three species. Key words. Conservation, Nepenthes alata group, Mindanao, threatened, ultramafic. He saw ‘palm oil plantations as far as the eye Dominick Gravine and his collection of Nepenthes can see.’ (-Gravine). “Palm oil plantations completely clear the land of its natural biodiversity.’ (-Gravine). “While in the local villages, I was offered many plants which were obviously taken from the wild. This page intentionally left blank Essential Orchids Orchids are one of the oldest and largest families in the plant kingdom with over 25,000 species worldwide. Through the millions of years of their existence, they developed complex relationships with their pollinators, animal communities, and environment in general. Today, orchids are now among the most widely grown and popular flowering potted plants in the world. With modern scientific cultivation, there are over 100,000 varieties of orchids and the number is increasing. However, in the wild populations are declining; many orchids are on the endangered lists, and almost all collecting of orchids is banned. What Makes an Orchid an Orchid? All orchids share three basic characteristics: ● Three sepals ● Three petals. In most orchids, one of these is highly modified and called a lip, or labellum. These are easy to see in most of the common orchids, and act as a landing pad for insect pollinators. ● A column. In most flowers the male (stamen) and female (pistil) reproductive structures are separate. -

Drumthwacket has served as the Offi cial Residence of the Governor of New Jersey since 1982, yet few governors have lived there full-time to date. The mansion is also an historic house museum and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. The non-profi t Drumthwacket Foundation is responsible for preserving, restoring, and curating the house and the grounds which include, beyond the mansion itself, adaptively restored Italianate gardens; acres of mowed lawn; a restored visitor’s center; a large new vis- itor parking lot; some perimeter woods; and a private area with tennis court, swimming pool and bath house which have fallen into disuse. -

Accepted in revised form 31 August 2004 Key words: carnivorous plants, insectivorous plants, morphology, nutrition, root Abstract Carnivorous plants may benefit from animal-derived nutrients to supplement minerals from the soil. Therefore, the role and importance of their roots is a matter of debate. Aquatic carnivorous species lack roots completely, and many hygrophytic and epiphytic carnivorous species only have a weakly devel- oped root system. In xerophytes, however, large, extended and/or deep-reaching roots and sub-soil shoots develop. Roots develop also in carnivorous plants in other habitats that are hostile, due to flood- ing, salinity or heavy metal occurance. Information about the structure and functioning of roots of car- nivorous plants is limited, but this knowledge is essential for a sound understanding of the plants’ physiology and ecology. Here we compile and summarise available information on: (1) The morphology of the roots. (2) The root functions that are taken over by stems and leaves in species without roots or with poorly developed root systems; anchoring and storage occur by specialized chlorophyll-less stems; water and nutrients are taken up by the trap leaves. (3) The contribution of the roots to the nutrient supply of the plants; this varies considerably amongst the few investigated species. -
