  • The Situation of the Inhabitants of Rhodes and Kos with a Turkish Cultural Background
Doc. 12526 23 February 2011 The situation of the inhabitants of Rhodes and Kos with a Turkish cultural background Report 1 Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights Rapporteur: Mr Andreas GROSS, Switzerland, Socialist Group Summary The Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights notes that the inhabitants of Rhodes and Kos with a Turkish cultural background are generally well integrated into the multicultural societies of the two islands. It commends the Greek Government for its genuine commitment to maintaining and developing the islands’ cosmopolitan character. The islands’ multiculturalism is the fruit of their rich history, which includes four centuries of generally tolerant Ottoman Turk rule. The good understanding between the majority population and the different minority groups, including that with a Turkish cultural background, is an important asset for the economic prosperity of the islands. The committee notes that better knowledge of the Turkish language and culture would benefit not only the inhabitants with a Turkish cultural background, but also their neighbours. Other issues raised by the inhabitants concerned include the apparent lack of transparency and accountability of the administration of the Muslim religious foundations (vakfs), and the unclear status of the Muslim religious leadership on the islands. The recommendations proposed by the committee are intended to assist the Greek authorities in resolving these issues in a constructive manner. 1 Reference to Committee: Doc. 11904, Reference 3581 of 22 June 2009. • Salamat Pagi from Indoensia
October 1, 2012. Hello from Los Angeles! Final update from Greece! At the time of our last update on July 16th, we had just checked out of Fethiye, Turkey, in search of cooler cruising grounds. The temperature was 100 degrees and rising, so the Greek islands beckoned us with their cooler breezes. On July 17th we sailed across the Aegean Sea to Rhodes Town (six hours) and anchored in front of the wind mills by the marina. We checked into Greece with the harbor police (15 Euros), customs (35 Euros), and passport police (no fee). We also got all of our communications for Greece sorted out (modem, Ipad, and mobile phone). The next morning we motored around the point and sailed down the southwest coast of Rhodes for 23 miles to Lindos, one of our favorite spots in Greece. We swam in the crystal clear water, enjoyed lunches at the seaside tavernas (restaurants), and hiked up to the charming village above and had some lovely dinners on the rooftop restaurant terraces with great bay views and cool breezes. After five days in Lindos we decided to work our way west on somewhat of a fast track. We had already visited 31 islands last year, so we thought we would revisit a few of them on our way to the islands we missed last season, namely Serifos, Sifnos and Milos, before heading to Kalamata on the Peloponnese, where we thought we would leave Lazy Bones for the winter. So we headed for Istros, a small bay near the southern tip of Rhodes en route to the island of Halki.

MICHELE MANOUSOS, CMC Deputy City Clerk & Collector DATE: MARCH 4, 2021 TO: THE HONORABLE MAYOR AND BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS FROM: IRENE S. JACOBS, CMC, CITY CLERK & COLLECTOR THOMAS J. TRASK, CITY ATTORNEY SUBJECT: MARCH 4, 2021 On July 14, 2020, the Board after recommendation of the Sister Cities Committee, adopted three additional sister cities (Ilida, Chania, and Hydra). These were in addition to our existing sister cities which are: Kalymnos, Halki, Symi and Larnica. During this time, it was discovered that the City nor the Sister Cities Committee had no formal procedures for selection of Sister Cities, or protocol for official visits. As a result of Board discussion and concerns raised, the City Attorney and myself were asked to compile program procedures, and research other surrounding municipalities on their Sister Cities program. Before you is a draft of program procedures that we have complied. This draft were presented to the Sister Cities on September 28th and they were in favor of these program procedures. Included topics in this draft include Sister City history, mission and goals (taken from the Sister Cities bylaws); initiation, acceptance, and formalization selection process; budget; visit and gift exchange protocol; and a listing of participating community partners. 1 Tarpon Springs Sister Cities Program Procedures 1 MARCH 4, 2021 Sister Cities Definition (Sister Cities International Website): A Sister City relationship is a broad-based, long-term partnership between two communities in two countries.
