    Mark Ashurst-McGee: Moroni: Angel or Treasure Guardian? 39 Moroni: Angel or Treasure Guardian? Mark Ashurst-McGee Over the last two decades, historians have reconsidered the origins of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the context of the early American tradition of treasure hunting. Well into the nineteenth century there were European Americans hunting for buried wealth. Some believed in treasures that were protected by magic spells or guarded by preternatural beings. Joseph Smith, founding prophet of the Church, had participated in several treasure-hunting expeditions in his youth. The church that he later founded rested to a great degree on his claim that an angel named Moroni had appeared to him in 1823 and showed him the location of an ancient scriptural record akin to the Bible, which was inscribed on metal tablets that looked like gold. After four years, Moroni allowed Smith to recover these “golden plates” and translate their characters into English. It was from Smith’s published translation—the Book of Mormon—that members of the fledgling church became known as “Mormons.” For historians of Mormonism who have treated the golden plates as treasure, Moroni has become a treasure guardian. In this essay, I argue for the historical validity of the traditional understanding of Moroni as an angel. In May of 1985, a letter to the editor of the Salt Lake Tribune posed this question: “In keeping with the true spirit (no pun intended) of historical facts, should not the angel Moroni atop the Mormon Temple be replaced with a white salamander?”1 Of course, the pun was intended.

When the brother of Jared received a vision of Jesus Christ, he was taught many things but was instructed not to share them with the world until the time of his death. The author proposes that the brother of Jared did, in fact, write those things down shortly before his death and then buried them, along with the interpreting stones, to be revealed to the world according to the timing of the Lord.

Miles passed through Saint Paul, Minnesota, after a tour of Indian reserva- tions in Utah, Montana, and Wyoming. During his stop in Saint Paul, the general spoke with reporters and speculated on the ori- gins of the so-called messiah craze that was sweeping the western reservations. "Several small parties of Indians have gone west- ward from their tribes to some point," Miles began, "which, as near as I can locate, is in Nevada, and there they have been shown somebody disguised as the Messiah and have spoken with him." Since Indians from several different tribes had reported speaking with the "Messiah" in their own tongues, Miles concluded that a number of conspirators carried out the impersonation. As to who was instigating the movement, the general stated, "I cannot say positively, but it is my belief the Mormons are the prime movers in all this. I do not think it will lead to an outbreak," he added, "but where an ignorant race of people become religious fanatics it is hard to tell just what they will do."' The general's opinion proved to be wrong. In less than two months, the "Sioux Outbreak of 1890" led to the infamous Battle of Wounded Knee on 29 December 1890.     Questions about Book of Mormon www.makinglifecount.net Why didn’t God write the entire Bible on golden plates instead of have every prophet write it on scrolls? Joseph Smith claims that he translated The Book of Mormon from golden plates that he received from the angel. Doesn’t this strike you as odd? Why didn’t God give golden plates to Moses and the prophets so scribes wouldn’t have to keep copying manuscripts over many centuries? Why not give gold plates to Paul and the gospel writers? Joseph Smith never showed these plates to anyone so there is no way to verify his story. Smith claimed he gave the plates back to Moroni. Why wouldn’t Moroni tell him to keep the plates as proof to doubters? In contrast, we have numerous copies of the manuscripts from the Bible that we can examine today. Why would it be hidden in a buried box? Smith said he discovered the plates on September 22, 1823 on Cumorah hill in New York, where they had been hidden in a buried box and protected for centuries by the angel Moroni. The book, which Mormons believe to be the Word of God, supposedly relates a history of three civilizations in the Americas from approximately 2700 B.C. until about 420 A.D. Again, no one has ever seen the box or the plates. How could Joseph Smith instantly learn a language by putting on “Interpreters”? In translating the Book of Mormon from the golden plates, Smith said the angel gave him "Interpreters," a pair of crystals joined in the form of a large pair of spectacles, which instantly gave him a perfect translation.

R. “Sacred Stones in the Vicinity of Near, Licking County, Ohio.” MS 28 (1, 8 December 1866): 753-59, 769- 74. “The Two Bibles” refers to the discovery of “sacred stones of Ohio,” upon which were inscribed Hebrew phrases (MS 28/41:641-43). This article analyzes the inscriptions further, showing that the decalogue was poorly written. It suggests the tribes of Dan, Reuben, Zebulun, or Joseph could have wandered to America and deposited the stones in Ohio. [B.D.] M.002 M., W. A. “The Book of Mormon in Prophecy.” MS 69 (16 May 1907): 305-11. Old Testament prophecies of Christ are conclusive proofs of his divinity; therefore, biblical prophecies of Book of Mormon are conclusive proofs of its divinity as well. [A.C.W.] M.003 M., W. A. “Lessons from the Life of Nephi.” MS 70 (November 1908): 705-8. The account of Nephi’s conduct and Laman and Lemuel’s treatment of him while crossing the ocean teaches important principles of the gospel. A righteous person will prosper and the unrighteous will not. We bind ourselves by cords that hinder us by evil speaking, neglect of prayer, disobedience, and failure to pay tithing. [B.D.] M.004 Mabey, Charles R. “Let Its Words Be Judged.” MS 64 (October 1902): 641-47. Though external evidence validates the Book of Mormon, it is the internal evidence that reveals its divinity. Like the Bible, the Book of Mormon rebukes sin, explains the existence of mankind, is filled with the “pure spirit of inspiration,” explains the law of opposition, and discusses the philosophy that brings one to believe in God.

    From Captain Kidd's Treasure Ghost to the Angel Moroni: Changing Dramatis Personae in Early Mormonism Ronald V. Huggins ONE DAY IN LATE MARCH 1697, a ship named the Adventure Galley arrived at the Island of Mohilla, one of the Comoro Islands. Its fever-stricken crew careened the vessel for cleaning and then proceeded to die off one by one, fifty men dead in about a week. The Adventure Galley had come to the Comoros the previous month, after stopping first at the neighboring Island of Johanna. It would not de- part again until April 18. Its captain, William (a.k.a. Robert) Kidd, did not know he would soon become one of history's most famous, and notorious, pirates. In those days pirates, even famous ones, were no oddity in the Comoros. Anyone who read, for example, the popular two-volume A General History of the Robberies and Murders of the Most Notorious Pyrates (1724 and 1728) by Daniel Defoe (a.k.a. Captain Charles Johnson), would find the Comoro Islands figuring into the accounts of Captains England, Misson, Tew, Kidd, Bowen, White, Condent, Cornelius, Howard, Williams, Burgess, North,1 and la Bouche.2 The pirate to whom Defoe dedicated his first chapter, Henry Avery (Every), also had a connection with the Comoros, which the author fails to men- 1.
