A Week in the Horn 13.03.2020 News in Brief President Sahle-Work Zewde Pays a Visit to Kenya FM Gedu says the Nile should be a Major Source of Cooperation than Conflict AU-EU Experts meet to consult on Developing an African Human Security Index Head of UNMISS Gives Press Statement on the Current Political Landscape in South Sudan Africa and the African Union The African Union has asked Sudan, Egypt and Ethiopia to seek a compromise to end their dispute on the filling and operation of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). The Union also called on international partners to provide their immediate support to Sudan at this critical juncture of the transition in light of the serious economic situation it is facing. Concluding a three-day working visit to Khartoum, capital of Sudan, on Friday (March 6), H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat, chairperson of the African Union Commission, said the object of his visit was to take stock of progress made in the peace process in Sudan, exchange views with national actors on the political and economic situation and assess the implementation of commitments made in the Constitutional Declaration, signed by the parties in August 2019. A two day AU-EU joint consultative workshop aiming at designing and developing an African Human Security Index was held on 5-6 March 2020 in Addis Ababa. The Workshop brought together participants with expertise in different areas of human security. The discussions during the consultative meeting were structured around issues of “designing and developing the methodology of African Human Security Index.” (See article) Ethiopia Ethiopia’s Foreign Ministry said last week on Friday (March 6) that the decision to recall its ambassadors from Egypt and Sudan has nothing to do with the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) dispute. -

A Week in the Horn 20.11.2020 News in Brief Ethiopia and China commemorate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic relation Making the operation in Tigray Short is Crucial African Union PSC discusses the Situation in the Horn of Africa: how best to support the transitions in Somalia, the Sudan and South Sudan Establishment of Consortium of Ethiopian Diaspora Associations: A New Trend for Coordinated Effort Africa and the African Union Ministers in charge of Gender and Women’s Affairs are scheduled to convene today (November 27), to deliberate and adopt decisions on accelerating actions on gender equality and women’s right on the continent. Gathering under the 5th Specialised Technical Committee on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (STC- GEWE), the Ministerial meeting is mandated to lead in the formulation of decisions, policies and African Common Positions; advocacy for the ratification, implementation and domestication of the African Union legal and policy instruments; advocacy at national, continental and global levels; fund raising in support of the African Union’s gender agenda; advocacy for the protection, promotion and respect of women’s human rights. The African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) held a virtual meeting on the agenda “the Situation in the Horn of Africa: how best to support the transition in Somalia, the Sudan and South Sudan” on 26 November 2020. The meeting was chaired by Ethiopia, Chair of the AUPSC for the month of November 2020, and attended by the AUPSC member states and invited speakers, including the AU Commissioner for Peace and Security, Chairperson of the Africa in Union High Level Implementations Panel (AUHIP) former President of South Africa, the UN Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, Representatives of Somalia, the Sudan and South Sudan, Representative of IGAD and the Ambassador of the European Union to the AU. -

Dr Negasso He was President of Ethiopia from 1995 until Gidada, was laid to rest at the St Peter and St 2001. He was also a founding member of the Paul Catholic Cemetery in Addis Ababa on Oromo Liberation Front (OLF). He is survived Sunday, 5th March. by three children. Thousands attended the state funeral including Monday, 6th May was declared a national day of senior government officials, such as Prime mourning for the former President, which saw Minister Abiy and President Sahle-Work, family flags flown at half-mast across the country at members and relatives of Dr Negasso. Ethiopian embassies and consulates as well as Ethiopian-owned vessels.
