Saint Bonaventure Catholic Parish Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 5, 2017 WORLD DAY FOR CONSECRATED LIFE Page two Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time PASTOR'S CORNER Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Please plan to attend one of our Church Campaign Receptions. It is also a great way to get acquainted or reacquainted with fellow parishioners. I look forward to seeing you at one of the Receptions. Please RSVP so we can prepare enough refreshments and information packets for everyone. Today is Boy Scout Sunday, the scouts of our parish will be assisting in various ways at the 9:00 a.m. Mass. We thank the Scouts for all that they do to make our community a better place. Please pray for those who are becoming Catechumens at the 10:30 a.m. Mass. These men and women have been discerning becoming Catholic Christians for a while now. They are grateful for your prayers and encouragement as they make this important step in their faith journey. We are celebrating World Day for Consecrated Life. Please pray for all religious priests, brothers, and sisters who have dedicated their lives to the Lord and to spreading his Good News. We have heard many times that Jesus Christ is the Light of the world. It is also important to remember that Jesus calls us to be the light of the world. In today’s Gospel that’s exactly what he told people during the Sermon on the Mount: You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lamp stand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father. (Matthew 5:13-16) At our baptism, our parents and godparents received a candle that was lit from the Paschal Candle, which symbolizes Christ our Light. The priest said to our parents and godparents: Receive the light of Christ. He then handed the candle to one of our parents or godparents and said: Parents and godparents, this light is entrusted to you to be kept burning brightly. These children of yours have been enlightened by Christ. They are to walk always as children of the light. May they keep the fl ame of faith alive in their hearts. When the Lord comes, may they go out to meet him with all the saints in the heavenly kingdom. (Baptism Rite) We keep the fl ame of faith alive in our hearts through Mass and daily prayer, through reading Scripture and Holy Communion. We let our light shine before others by sharing our faith with family and friends, with those we know well and even with those we don’t know so well. There is so much darkness in our world. People get caught up in the darkness of sin and evil. The Lord is calling us to bring his light to those in darkness. I know it can be challenging; however, remember what Jesus said,“Everything is possible to one who has faith.”(Mark 9:23) Lord, help us let our light shine.
