Creative Community Organizing Deserves a Place on the Must-Read Shelf Next to a People's History of the United States
More Praisefor Creative CommunityOrganizing "Make room, Howard ZinnI Si Kahn's Creative Community Organizing deserves a place on the must-read shelf next to A People's History of the United States. Warm, cheerful, candid, and wise-just like the man him self-Si's book is more thana how-to for justice seekers, more than a grip ping memoir from the front lines of bodacious modern activism. It's the up-close and creative story of how the 'people's history' gets made:' -Jay Harris, Publisher, Mother Jones "Si Kahn's latest book is a great addition to strategic community organiz ing, offeringnuanced insights into the difficultand oftenlife-saving fights organizers wage on a daily basis for social justice, human rights, and pro gressive change." -Rinku Sen, President and Executive Director, Applied Research Center; Publisher, ColorLines; and coauthorof The Accidental American "Creative Community Organizing reminds us of the power of music and , storytelling for deep transformation. Magic happens when we bring to gether creativity with strategy. Si gives us therecipe for moving to a future where human rights for all can become possible:' -Mallika Dutt, ExecutiveDirector, Breakthrough "Si Kahn is a Renaissance man for the social movements of our genera tion. He is a troubadour, a poet, and a lyricist; a thoughtful and reflective writer; a committed organizer and institution builder; and a carrier of his family 's and his faith's deepest values. Most of all, he is a passionate be liever in social justice and the power of ordinary people to stand up and determine their destinies. -

Sam Bush, 1969-1985: a Partial Discography
Sam Bush, 1969-1985: a partial discography. Sam Bush is one of the most prominent mandolin players in the United States. His personal style, which combines elements of bluegrass, fiddle music, rock and jazz, has had a tremendous influence on many mandolinists of the post-world war II generation. This list includes all the recordings that I could uncover that Sam had any part of in the first phase of his career. I'm sure that I have missed or overlooked many more. 1) Poor Richard's Almanac. 1969, American Heritage, AHLP40125S. w/Alan Munde, Wayne Stewart, Leo Fernandez. Although he is regarded as perhaps the finest and most influential tenor player to have emerged in the '40's, Dexter Gordon has made only sporadic visits to his native country in recent years. Each visit has been an eagerly anticipated event, and the enthusiasm of those who have seen Dexter only served to whet the appetite for the next visit. And in this context, Dexter's return to New York last fall - for the first time in 5 years- stands out as one of the cher- ished events of 1976. In The New York Times, Robert Palmer wrote, "Mr. Gordon re-established himself as the living master of the tenor saxophone...with some of the the '70's....It stands as a new "Homecoming" most accomplished and stir- plateau in Dex's career and, for The spectacular return of ring improvisations heard here us, an opportunity to share in Dexter Gordon. in recent years:' the workings of one of the great On Columbia Records and Tapes. 1983 WITS Anthology (PDF)
ARKANSAS POETRY IN THE SCHOOLS 1983 Poetry in the Schools is a joint project of The National Endowment for the Arts and The University of Arkansas, Fayetteville and is staffed by members of the University's Programs in Creative Writing and Translation Edited by Mike Jenkins Jeff Jentz Garnette Mullis Karen Osborn Cover design by Janet Osborn Karen Borgenheimer Co-director James Whitehead Project Coordinator Karen Osborn Co-director Forward Dreams, balloons, panthers, magic, fear, watermelons, fishing, cobras, poems describing the end of the world, poems describing the creation of the first child's voice-- this anthology is characterized by a richness of variety. These poems offer both insight and surprise, whether describing an imaginary place, as Julie Mackey does in "The Place Beyond My Closet Door": "Flowers dressed in pink gowns/ And lace cobwebs/ That blue spiders had sewn" or revealing an observation about this world, as Amy Willmon does in "Horses in the Rain": The main thing is that horses do a lot of things in the rain. They run for the barn. They dash for their oats. They trot with their glossy wet coats. The Arkansas Poetry in the Schools Program enthusiastically presents this anthology. We are indebted to the teachers and administrators of the seventy-nine schools we visited for introducing us to their students and making us welcome in their schools. We are grateful to the Arkansas Arts Council; Dr. Don Ousterhout, Director of Research and Sponsored Programs, and his assistant, Dr. John S~okes; Mr. David Paul of Research Accounting; and Dr. Kinnamon and the secretarial staff of the English Department.
