Tom & Jerry, Bad Influences? Eindexamen Engels havo 2011 - II havovwo.nl Tekst 1 Tom & Jerry, Bad Influences? 1 Yesterday afternoon I ran across a story about Turner Broadcasting which is currently delving into its catalog of 1,500 hours of Hanna-Barbera cartoons to remove scenes that “glamorize” smoking. The move is in response to one viewer’s complaint about an episode of “Tom and Jerry.” 2 A Turner spokesperson said the viewer had complained about a cartoon in which Tom lights a cigarette in an attempt to 1 a female cat and that only cartoons “where smoking could be deemed to be cool or glamorized,” would be cut and that scenes in which villains smoke will remain untouched. 3 2 , this move will save a generation of youngsters from trying to woo cats with tobacco. Unfortunately, however, those same children are still in danger of dropping anvils on one another’s heads, putting each other’s tails in electrical sockets, cutting each other in half, poisoning one another, exploding each other with dynamite and other sundry weapons available from the diabolical Acme corporation. http://voices.washingtonpost.com, 2006 ▬ www.havovwo.nl - 1 - www.examen-cd.nl ▬ Eindexamen Engels havo 2011 - II havovwo.nl Let op: beantwoord een open vraag altijd in het Nederlands, behalve als het anders is aangegeven. • The Gravity of Cartoon Physics; Or, Schrödinger's Coyote Gravitacija V Fiziki Risank
2018, Vol. 15 (1), 29–49(138) Victor Kennedy revije.ff.uni-lj.si/elope University of Maribor, Slovenia doi: 10.4312/elope.15.1.29-49 UDC: [791.228:82-311.9]:53 The Gravity of Cartoon Physics; or, Schrödinger’s Coyote ABSTRACT When Wile E. Coyote goes off a cliff, instead of falling in a parabolic arc, he comes to a halt in mid-air, hangs there until he realizes that he is no longer on solid ground, then falls. Many critics and, indeed, the creators of the cartoons themselves, describe this as “cartoon physics,” which breaks the rules that appear to govern the real world, but several principles of modern physics are in fact depicted here. He is both falling and not falling; when he is able to observe his situation, the laws of quantum physics catch up with him. This, and the principle of relativity, govern the apparent paradoxes of the cartoon world. Although the Coyote was, according to his creators, conceived as a parody of a modern scientist and played for laughs, he illustrates several paradoxes of modern science and the unease with which these are widely viewed. These cartoon physics have become a meme that has developed in later animated cartoons and live-action science fiction films, and is now even a part of modern-day science textbooks. LOONEY TUNES: BACK IN ACTION YELLOW PAGES Story by LARRY DOYLE Drafts by GLEN FICARRA & JOHN REQUA LARRY DOYLE ROGER SCHULMAN ADAM RESNICK Current Revisions by LARRY DOYLE October 25, 2002 OVER BLACK We hear “Merrily We Roll Along,” a strangely forboding * pipe organ version. Then SCREAMS. 1 ANIMATED IN THE STYLE OF “BATMAN BEYOND” 1 A terrified crowd rushes the screen, escaping ELMER, in evil clown make-up, riding atop a mammoth 19th CENTURY CIRCUS CALLIOPE. Screaming steam shoots from the Calliope as mechanical arms overturn cars and loot stores. ELMER (Maniacal Laugh) A dark figure drops down in its path. It’s DAFFY. He faces off against the mechanical monstrosity. A steel claw grabs for him; he leaps aside. He jumps on the claw. Daffy is hoisted skyward. He spies a small open panel on the calliope. It is a maze of wires and circuits. In DAFFY’S COMPUTER-LIKE MIND, the circuits are analyzed in 3-D and the system’s Achilles Heel is located. A grim Daffy plucks a feather from his chin and directs the quill precisely into the circuit board. The circuit crackles. The calliope shudders and bucks. The calliope explodes into a fireball, which Daffy rides toward camera a la “Mission: Impossible.” VOICE (O.S.) Hold on. The cartoon image on screen freezes. 2 INT. CONFERENCE ROOM - DAY 2 Daffy sits at a large conference table headed by MR. WARNER and MR. WARNER’S BROTHER. The end of the table is crammed with identical JUNIOR EXECUTIVES, on chairs that put their heads only halfway above the lip of the table.

  • Transcript a Pinewood Dialogue with Chuck Jones
TRANSCRIPT A PINEWOOD DIALOGUE WITH CHUCK JONES Working at Warner Bros. from 1938 through 1962, legendary animator Chuck Jones perfected the wisecracking Bugs Bunny, the short-tempered Daffy Duck, and the amorous Pepé Le Pew. The purest expression of his artistry is his Road Runner series, in which Wile E. Coyote endlessly pursues the elusive Road Runner. With its streamlined visual style, brilliantly geometric gags, and constant comic invention, the series is a masterpiece of American screen comedy. During the retrospective Chuck Amuck , Jones spoke at length about his life and art. In the tradition of his hero, Mark Twain, Jones was a witty, wry, thoroughly engaging speaker. A Pinewood Dialogue moderated by Chief has, though, he has the same responsibility that the Curator David Schwartz (December 17, 1994): captain of a ship has. Everybody on the ship should be better [at] running the ship than the SCHWARTZ: Please now welcome Chuck Jones. captain does [is], except the captain has to make (Applause) the decisions.
