Betterthancheddar (Bettor’s Delight) de- feated Roll With Joe in the 3-year-old Colt Pace and Bet- tor Sweet (Bettor’s Delight) triumphed over Foiled Again in the Older Male Pace. Perhaps that’s why some voters went in still other direc- tions. “I voted for See You At Peelers,” Phil Terry said. “She Foiled Again Roll With Joe was the best filly that raced during the year and she brought so much attention to the sport. Now we’re talking interesting. other horse, she was such a great story.” Cont. p2 It was a year in which there were several good horses, but none that dominated from start to end. A case could be made for four or five, but it appears that the race will come down to two, Foiled Again (Dragon Again) and Roll With Joe (Cam’s Card Shark). Who will get it? It looks like it’s too close to call. “It has to be one or the other,” said voter Bob Heyden, who declined to reveal who he voted for. “It’s going to be a very close call. I think Roll With Joe might get it because he made more money ($1.64 million versus $1.4 million). Some voters get lazy and just look at that. He also comes out of the so called glamour division, the 3-year-old pacing colts, and that means something.” Trained by Ron Burke and driven by Yannick Gingras, Foiled Again was 14 for 28 during the year and had a mark of 1:48.1 at Mohawk. His top wins include the American Nationals, the Indiana Pacing Derby, the Quillen Memorial and the Molson. Along the way, he also dispatched the knock that he is merely a half-mile track specialist. “He was a warrior,” said Jason Settlemoir, who voted for Foiled Again, who is now 8. “He started early in the Levy series and raced with domination throughout the year. In my eyes, he is certainly Pacer of the Year. He was pretty spe- cial. But I know the voting is going to be tight.” “What Foiled Again did this year was just unbelievable,” said voter Roger Huston. It seemed like you could always count on him.” HarnessRacingUpdate.com • 2/12/12 PAGE 2 of 8 ‘Who Will Be Pacer of the Year?’ cont. Here he comes With a well-received first-crop of yearlings for Heeraat, Mickley Stud is looking forward to the stallion’s runners hitting the track in the spring. Aisling Crowe chats with Richard Kent 48 mickley stud Photo by Emma Berry LL BOODSTOCK investment IS HIGH RISK, but backing a new stallion is at the very top of the “beware” pyramid and should come with a government health warning.A Launching a new stallion onto the market takes nerves of steel, and particularly so when the stud in question is not perhaps located in the more fashionable enclaves of the thoroughbred world and the sire does not command the astronomical covering fee that attracts the attention, and mares, of the industry’s influencers. The process is fraught with as much risk as that of a space launch. Luckily, Richard Kent of Mickley Stud possesses the pedigree, experience and nous which have helped him guide the first three seasons of Heeraat toward lift-off, the son of Dark Angel due to have his first runners next spring, The process is also aided by Heeraat himself, a talented sprinter from a fast family, and by a sire who is establishing himself as a dominant force in the breed. “It has taken 25 years to try and understand how to get a stallion’s career going and to develop the confidence to do it,” confides the Cork-born Kent who runs the stud in Shropshire with his partner Claire Lloyd. “I spoke to Tony O’Callaghan about how he had achieved success with Danetime, Kodiac, and now Society Rock and he said you just have to keep working away, even though you can be unlucky and get average horses until one day the good ones come along.” Danetime and Kodiac began life at similar fees to the £4,000 that Heeraat has stood at for his first three seasons.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLES OF THE AMERICAS AND THE HORSE: DECONSTRUCTING A EUROCENTRIC MYTH By Yvette Running Horse Collin A Dissertation Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Indigenous Studies University of Alaska Fairbanks May 2017 © 2017 Yvette Running Horse Collin APPROVED: Raymond Barnhardt, Ph.D., Committee Chair Beth Ginondidoy Leonard, Ph.D., Committee Co-Chair Theresa Arevgaq John, Ph.D., Committee Member Marco A. Oviedo, Ph.D., Committee Member Michael Koskey, Ph.D., Department Chair Todd Sherman, M.F.A., Dean, College of Liberal Arts Michael Castellini, Ph.D., Dean of the Graduate School Abstract This research project seeks to deconstruct the history of the horse in the Americas and its relationship with the Indigenous Peoples of these same lands. Although Western academia admits that the horse originated in the Americas, it claims that the horse became extinct in these continents during the Last Glacial Maximum (between roughly 13,000 and 11,000 years ago). This version of “history” credits Spanish conquistadors and other early European explorers with reintroducing the horse to the Americas and to her Indigenous Peoples. However, many Native Nations state that “they always had the horse” and that they had well established horse cultures long before the arrival of the Spanish. To date, “history” has been written by Western academia to reflect a Eurocentric and colonial paradigm. The traditional knowledge (TK) of the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas, and any information that is contrary to the accepted Western academic view, has been generally disregarded, purposefully excluded, or reconfigured to fit the accepted academic paradigm.
