However, it was a rather long ordeal involving five weeks with artifcial plumb- ing. The added experience should make me a more useful con- sultant to my aging friends. Returning to the WGBH TV series on the Nuclear Age that we talked about. What with vacations the team could not move on your interviewing in August but will be ready shortly at your convenience. The Executive Producer, Zvi DonNet, will be in touch with you and will be sending materials that will show you the overall scheme and the context of the program involving you. I've just seen the fifth program (in rough form): it is centered on the McNamara period and relates closely to what you might like to convey. I would urge you to see the video tape or read the transcript of it. John Newhouse has just been signed on to write an accom- panying book. It will take him nearly two years but that it the schedule. The first showing will probably be late 1988. I should be up to traveling next month and will make it to New York and pin you down for breakfast. Public Broadcasting THE NUCLEAR AGE (working title) is a thirteen-part historical Boston: documentary series produced by WGBH/Boston in collaboration with Channel 2 MIT and Harvard University. The programs will be transmitted Channel 44 WGBH Radio nationwide on public television in 1988 or early 1989. The Springfield: series is also intended to be used as a stand-alone course, Channel 57 or as a supplement to existing undergraduate courses in the Lowell Institute subject area. N a collection of manuscripts recently purchased by the Rutgers Library are four holograph letters of William Dean Howells I to Edmund Gosse that are here reproduced for the first time. Two of these letters were written on September 9, 1883, and on January 2, 1884, from Howells' Boston home to his friend in Lon- don, a few months after his return from a year abroad. These letters, touching on a variety of subjects, are important to those who may be interested in the many-sided friendship of Howells and Gosse. The other two letters, dated April 14 and 15, 1904, from Howells to Gosse, are merely hastily written notes concerning a luncheon engagement in London. Howells, his wife, and his daughter Mildred had arrived in England to attend the ceremony at Oxford in June at which Howells was to receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters.

The School also has a long history of offering professional and distance education, and provides a variety of amenities and opportunities to students and degree earning alumni. Since its establishment in 1910, it is estimated that 500,000 students have taken a course at the Extension School. Although most students take one of the 715 on-campus and distance-learning based courses offered for professional development or personal enrichment, approximately 150 Bachelor's and 550 Master's degrees are awarded each year. == HistoryEdit == Founded in 1910, by President A. Lawrence Lowell, the Harvard Extension School grew out of the [Lowell Institute]], which was created according to the terms of a bequest by John Lowell, Jr. It was designed to serve the educational interests and needs of the greater Boston community, particularly those "who had the ability and desire to attend college, but also had other obligations that kept them from traditional schools." It has since extended its "academic resources to the public, locally, nationally, and internationally." During the 1920s professors from Boston and Harvard Universities left the confines of their campuses and traveled to teach courses offsite. While they were primarily aimed at teachers, courses were offered wherever 40 or more students expressed an interest. Professors traveled on a weekly basis to places around New England and as far away as Yonkers, New York, some 200 miles away.
