The private lane to Church House is the first right turn and the gates to the house are on the right. situation Church House sits is in an extremely accessible situation in the heart of Fife and is particularly well placed for Cupar, St Andrews, Perth and Dundee. Edinburgh is only 40 miles by road and there are railway stations close by at both Cupar (4 miles) and Ladybank (3 miles) with regular services both north and south. The Tay Bridge is only 15 miles by car and the future opening of the Queensferry Crossing (29 miles) is expected to significantly improve commuting times to Edinburgh. Private schools in the area include St Leonards in St Andrews and Dundee High School while Bell Baxter in Cupar and Madras College in St Andrews are both highly regarded secondary schools. There are local primary schools at Letham, Ladybank, Springfield Pitlessie and Cupar. Cupar is an active town with a supermarket, railway station and good range of shops and services. St Andrews is renowned worldwide as the ‘Home of Golf’ and the Old Course is a regular host to the Open Championship. There are seven golf courses run by the St Andrews Links Trust and the many other golf courses in the area include nearby Ladybank. St Andrews is also well known for its university, one of the oldest in Britain, founded in 1410. It also has a fantastic range of shops, restaurants, cafés and hotels. description Church House has been beautifully and sympathetically renovated to provide exceptional and flexible accommodation which is ideally suited to modern day family living. The skilful and imaginative conversion design has ensured that the ecclesiastical character of the building has been cleverly retained, creating a wonderfully original home. It is without doubt one of the best church conversions in Fife and the superb living space is hugely appealing. The property dates back to 1843 with later additions. It operated as a church up until the 1980s before its transformation into a family home began. It is category C Listed and sits in approximately 0.5 acres of beautiful secluded gardens. The imposing main door is situated to the east of the main building with a stone carving depicting the burning bush sitting above it. This door leads through an entrance vestibule where partially glazed double doors lead into the magnificent drawing / dining room. This room was the original body of the church and retains some outstanding architectural features including decorative stone carved arches and pillars, original timber panelling, six stone mullioned east facing stained glass windows, a double height ceiling and a contemporary spiral staircase up to the level above. A generous dining area sits at one end of this room which is a fabulous entertaining space. The kitchen / breakfast room sits to the rear of the church with windows to the south overlooking the attractively landscaped garden. It has a nut wood floor, an exposed stone wall and an excellent range of fitted base and wall units with a double Belfast sink incorporated. There is also a second Belfast sink set into the breakfast bar. Fitted appliances include an American style Samsung fridge freezer with water cooler, a Rangemaster Toledo oven and grill with six electric hobs and an extractor fan over, a Bosch dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer. A bespoke arch style oak door leads out to the patio sitting area and garden. A hallway with exposed stone walls leads from the kitchen through to the family room which was formerly the church vestry. This has the original timber panelling, stained glass windows to the north and west, two original fireplaces (one fitted with a modern multi fuel stove) and further windows overlooking the south facing garden. Magnificent original mahogany doors enable this room to be divided into two and currently one half is used as a study. At the end of this hallway there is a glazed door leading out to the east facing terrace. A permanent ladder leads up to two attic/storage rooms above. Off of this hallway there is also a ground floor, fully tiled shower room with WC, wash hand basin and walk in shower. There is also a large double door storage cupboard. The ground floor has four generous double bedrooms. One of these has a south facing window overlooking the garden and an en suite WC. There is a further en suite bedroom with WC, wash hand basin and bath with shower over. The final two bedrooms on the ground floor both have windows to the east and an interconnecting hallway links them to a bathroom with WC, wash hand basin and bath with shower over. The first floor accommodation is approached by a contemporary spiral staircase made of wood, metal and glass leading up from the drawing room / dining room. At the top there is a galleried landing overlooking the living space below. Underneath one of the original stone archways off the landing is a private reading area with Velux window overhead. At the end of the landing is the stunning sitting room, once the church gallery. Again, this room is rich with period features including three beautiful stained glass arched windows, a stone archway, an east facing fan window and full height vaulted ceilings. A door from this room leads out to the original back staircase and tower. Situated next to this room is a useful tiled shower room with WC and hand basin. The master bedroom suite is also located on this floor. It has two arched fan windows to the west as well as an ensuite bathroom with WC, wash hand basin, walk in shower cubicle and bath with an internal stained glass window all finished to a high standard. There is also a dressing room. A small door leading from the sitting room, at the top of the rear staircase leads to the entrance to the tower which has three levels. The lower two tower rooms have turret windows, however the top room (once the belfry) provides exceptional 360o panoramic views over the neighbouring farmland of Fife. The tower has been sympathetically renovated by the current owners resulting in a striking and unique feature. outside A private lane leads up to wooden gates giving access to Church House’s driveway. Immediately to the right there is a generous parking area with potential for a large garage or additional outbuildings subject to planning consent. The drive bordered by flower beds and mature trees continues up to the rear and side of the house where there is further parking. Church House has a wonderful and private south facing garden which is largely laid to lawn with well stocked flower beds, mature trees and a beech hedge surrounding it. In the corner there is a greenhouse and there is also a garden shed. There are two separate outdoor entertaining areas. One overlooks the garden with access to the kitchen. The second, is an enclosed area with a timber decked terrace to the west of the house which enjoys evening sun and offers additional entertaining space. There is also a log store and two outbuildings. On the east side there is a coal store and a large cellar accessed by stone steps from the front of the house. • Breakfast Programme
The Celebration of the Wedding of HRH Prince William of Wales & Miss Catherine Middleton Site Map 2 About the Event Today, two of St Andrews’ most famous recent graduates are due to be married in Westminster Abbey in London with the eyes of the world upon them. As the town in which they met and their relationship blossomed, we are delighted to be able to welcome you to our celebrations in honour of the Royal Couple, HRH Prince William of Wales and Miss Catherine Middleton. A variety of entertainment and activities await, building up towards the big moment at around 10:45am where the Royal Couple will be making their entrance into the Abbey for the ceremony itself (due to start at 11am). This will be shown live on the large outdoor screen situated in the main Quadrangle. The “Wedding Breakfast” will be served from 8am on the lower lawn from the marquee with a selection of hot and cold food/drink available. Food will also be on sale throughout the day from local vendors. After the ceremony, and the traditional ‘appearance at the balcony’ the entertainment on the main stage will pick up again, taking the party on to 4pm. The main purpose of the day, aside from having fun, is to raise money for the Royal Wedding Charitable Fund. The list of charities we will be collecting for appears later in the programme. Most of what you see today is provided for free, but we would encourage you to please give generously. The organising committee hope you enjoy this momentous occasion and we are sure you will join with us in extending our warmest wishes and heartfelt congratulations to “Wills & Kate” as they look forward to a long and happy life together.

^ National Library of Scotland BOOO 192299* 'WESTWOOD'S PAEOCHIAL DIRECTORY FOR THE COUNTIES OF FIFE AND KINROSS, CONTAINING THE MIES AND ADDRESSES OF GENTRY, AND OE PERSONS IN BUSINESS, e^c. CUPAR-FIFE: A. WESTWOOD. EDINBURGH : JOHN MENZIES. jJM^. A. WESTWOOD, PRINTER, CROSS, CUPAR. PREFACE. In introducing to the public the First Edition of the Parochial Directory of Fife and Kinross, the Publisher begs to state that the work has been in contemplation for several years ; and that nothing but a deep sense of the labour and responsibility attending such an undertaking, has prevented its earlier appearance. Now, that the intention has been matui'ed, he hopes that his labours will be generally appreciated. The Publisher expects that a work of such general utility as a Parochial Directory for the two Counties, will commend itself to the patronage of the public. Indeed, the interest taken in the under- taking, and the assistance so heai'tily rendered by all classes, place its success beyond a doubt ; and he embraces this opportunity of returning his thanks to those gentlemen who gave their aid in getting up the various Parochial Lists, and correcting the Proofs, In particular, he begs to express his special thanks to William Patrick, Esq., Assessor of Lands and Heritages for the County of Fife, who most matei-ially lessened his labours by placing at his disposal the Valuation Rolls made up by him ; and otherwise tendered such help as only one having a thorough knowledge of the County could give. The Publisher is aware that, although every effort has been made to secure such a measure of accui'acy as to make the undei-taking worthy of the two Counties, some typographical and other errors will be found in the body of the work ; but he hopes that they will not interfere with its general usefulness ; and he rests satisfied that those who can best appreciate the difficulties attending the getting up of such a work, will be the most ready to overlook those minor faults which could scarcely be avoided in the first issue of such a publication.

  • William Oughter Lonie - St Andrews Educational Reformer
William Oughter Lonie - St Andrews educational reformer Edmund F. Robertson Mathematical Institute, University of St Andrews, North Haugh, St Andrews, KY16 9SS, Scotland William Oughter Lonie (1822-1894) was appointed Mathematics Headmaster at Madras College, St Andrews, Scotland in 1846. Thomas Brown was a pupil at the school at the time and remembered the day of his appointment (see [7]): When the Rev William Martin was promoted from the Mathematical Mastership of the Madras College to the Chair of Moral Philosophy at Aberdeen, Mr Lonie was appointed to fill the vacancy. I remember sitting one day in the Latin class, when Provost Playfair entered in company with a young man whom he introduced to Dr Woodford, and the whisper circled round the class that this was the new Mathematical Master. It was not long before he made his mark. His methods were not stereotyped or formal. He did not insist on the dry and rigid demonstrations of Euclid. He dealt with mathematics not as an exercise of memory but as an effort of intelligence and reason. In this paper we shall look in $1 at Andrew Bell, the founder of Madras College, in $2 at the Madras College, in $3 at W. O. Lonie's career, in $4 at his teaching methods and philosophy, in $5 at the work of James Walker, one of his pupils, and finally details of the later part of Lonie's life and career in $6. 1. Andrew Bell, the founder of Madras College. Andrew Bell was born in St Andrews on 27 March 1753.
