The goals of RTI are: • To make data-based decisions to improve student outcomes • To provide high-quality interventions to match student needs • Create a system that is a shared responsibility with educators. The fi rst step in the RTI process is to use a universal screener (MAP tests) to identify students in need of intervention. We have done that by identifying any student in 7th through 10th grades that have been below the 25th percentile on two of their last three MAP tests. We have recently identifi ed the students that met this criteria in Reading and in Math. On May 2009, Unit 96 A.L.A sponsored our poppy poster contest for the 3rd grade The second step is to design an individual intervention plan class at Webster Elementary. (Photo After six weeks of intervention, the student is assessed compliments of June Hopkins) again to see if they made progress. If they did, then they will continue with the tier 1 interventions . If not, then they will be elevated to tier 1. Tier 2 interventions includes 2-3 30-minute interventions per week done outside the classroom. This will typically be enrichment/ remedial activities that take place in study halls. The tier 2 interventions do not take place in the regular classroom. If a student makes progress on tier 2, then they can go back to tier 1. If progress continues to be made after tier 1, and the MAP tests show student progress, then the student may be removed from the RTI plan. In summary, RTI is a process to help our struggling learners. It is a new initiative and we hope to have all the bugs worked out after the fi rst year of implementation.
