Is Rock Music in Decline? a Business Perspective
Jose Dailos Cabrera Laasanen Is Rock Music in Decline? A Business Perspective Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences Bachelor of Business Administration International Business and Logistics 1405484 22nd March 2018 Abstract Author(s) Jose Dailos Cabrera Laasanen Title Is Rock Music in Decline? A Business Perspective Number of Pages 45 Date 22.03.2018 Degree Bachelor of Business Administration Degree Programme International Business and Logistics Instructor(s) Michael Keaney, Senior Lecturer Rock music has great importance in the recent history of human kind, and it is interesting to understand the reasons of its de- cline, if it actually exists. Its legacy will never disappear, and it will always be a great influence for new artists but is important to find out the reasons why it has become what it is in now, and what is the expected future for the genre. This project is going to be focused on the analysis of some im- portant business aspects related with rock music and its de- cline, if exists. The collapse of Gibson guitars will be analyzed, because if rock music is in decline, then the collapse of Gibson is a good evidence of this. Also, the performance of independ- ent and major record labels through history will be analyzed to understand better the health state of the genre. The same with music festivals that today seem to be increasing their popularity at the expense of smaller types of live-music events. Introduction Electric Junk: Krautrock’s Identity Crisis If there is any musical subculture to which this modern age of online music consumption has been particularly kind, it is certainly the obscure, groundbreaking, and oft misunderstood German pop music phenomenon known as “krautrock”. That krautrock’s appeal to new generations of musicians and fans both in Germany and abroad continues to grow with each passing year is a testament to the implicitly iconoclastic nature of the style; krautrock still sounds odd, eccentric, and even confrontational approximately twenty-five years after the movement is generally considered to have ended.1 In fact, it is difficult nowadays to even page through a recent issue of major periodicals like Rolling Stone or Spin without chancing upon some kind of passing reference to the genre. -

The Sound of the Suburbs: A Case Study of Three Garage Bands in San Jose, California During the 1960s by Paul Kauppila INTRODUCTION/THE BEATLES The recent spate of articles, television specials, radio shows, and other observations of the fortieth anniversary of the Beatles' appearance on the Ed Sullivan show attest to that moment's lasting significance in the history of popular music and popular culture. In an increasingly fragmented era of media consumption through multiple technological avenues, most prominently cable and pay television and the Internet, it is sometimes difficult to imagine the profound effect that a single television program could have in the year 1964. The tremendous popularity of the Beatles, coupled with an expanding and increasingly affluent middle class, led to an explosion of bands playing music in a style that eventually came to be known as "garage rock", although that term did not come into common usage until several years later. -

FAOUDA WA RUINA: A HISTORY OF MOROCCAN PUNK ROCK AND HEAVY METAL by Brian Trott A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements of a Degree of Master of Arts In History at The University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee May 2018 ABSTRACT FAOUDA WA RUINA: A HISTORY OF MOROCCAN PUNK ROCK AND HEAVY METAL by Brian Trott The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2018 Under the Supervision of Professor Gregory Carter While the punk rock and heavy metal subcultures have spread through much of the world since the 1980s, a heavy metal scene did not take shape in Morocco until the mid-1990s. There had yet to be a punk rock band there until the mid-2000s. In the following paper, I detail the rise of heavy metal in Morocco. Beginning with the early metal scene, I trace through critical moments in its growth, building up to the origins of the Moroccan punk scene and the state of those subcultures in recent years. -

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion's influence (loud and sloppy garage-blues) was still felt throughout the country, as proven by the Immortal Lee County Killers in Alabama with The Essential Fuck-Up Blues (2001); the Black Keys in Ohio with The Big Come Up (2002); and by the Kills in Florida, playing the version popularized by the White Stripes on No Wow (2005). The Fiery Furnaces (4), formed by Matthew Friedberger and Eleanor Friedberger, siblings from Chicago who relocated to New York, exhibited a versatile and multi-faceted style on Gallowsbird's Bark (2003). Anti- crooning vocals and spiked guitar riffs as well as wildly unstable dynamics evoked the Rolling Stones at their most drunken/deranged, or Captain Beefheart's Magic Band fronted by Janis Joplin. At the same time the exuberant neglect of their arrangements was reminiscent of Pere Ubu. Blueberry Boat (2004) stretched out into longer and more ambitious songs, collages of genres and tours de force of arrangement (including electronic keyboards) that were meant to create a new form of musical theater. That form came to life on Rehearsing My Choir (2005), a work structured as a dialogue between an older woman and a younger one over a substratum of eccentric and cacophonous sounds. -
