Words such as adventure, thrill and culture come to mind when you think of this hilly land whose high altitude has given us world champions such as Moses Kiprotich and Joshua Cheptegei. n the last few decades, Eastern Uganda has been transformed into a tourist haven. With natural attractions such as the source of the Nile, Sipi Falls, Nyero Rock Paintings and caves and Mt Elgon the hikers’ paradise there is so much to explore Iand experience. Small farmers have opened up their farms and homes to tourists, while investors have put up state-of- the-art facilities. To me, this signals great progress in taking down the barriers between the surrounding community and the traveler. This is the land of the Imbalu initiation ceremony and the Kadodi dance. Your taste buds will also be treated to local culinary delights such as mboli (potatoes), kamalewa, maido (ground nuts) and coffee from Masaba land. The people are hospitable, progressive and so eager to share their essence and their history with you. Words such as adventure, thrill and culture come to mind when you think of this hilly land whose high altitude has given us world champions such as Moses Kiprotich and Joshua Cheptegei. The luxury traveler is spoilt for choice for locations to visit, experiences to be had while the budget traveler has quality guest houses and campsites to choose from. The thrill seeker too, will not be able to exhaust the offers on hand. It has also been noticed that where resorts once kept guests within the confines of its walls, today, hotels encourage guests to go out and explore local culture while also inviting residents to come enjoy on-site restaurants, bars, and coffee shops. Hotels have also recognized that home-sharing services are here to stay and are taking cues from what they do well. It’s a more open-minded take on the best of classic hospitality. When done right, it’s good for the traveler and it’s good for the travel business. I commend and recommend this trend. While the reference might have been borrowed from the Biblical magi that paid homage to Jesus in a manger, these people Ttruly aspire to live up to it. They are a progressive and hardworking group known for their honesty and integrity. Because of their proximity to the border and their warm and hospitable nature, the land is filled with various tribes that speak several languages. In addition to their mother tongues such Ateso, Lusoga, Lugisu, Sabiny, Kumam they also speak Swahili, English and Luganda. They are agriculturists but also engage in pastoralism in some pockets of the region. This is the home of the famed musical instrument akogo, local brew ajono and kadodi the dance performed during the imbalu ceremony. The east is known for being the home of Uganda’s most celebrated athletes such as Joshua Cheptegei, Moses Kipsiro and Olympic champion Stephen Kiprotich. Consequently it does not have the vast rolling savannahs of Kenya and particularly Tanzania, or the huge proliferation of plains animals that these countries are famous for. It is also only now recovering from the widespread poaching that went unchecked during years of violent conflict and political turmoil, which resulted in the destruction of massive animal populations and the local extinction of the rhino and wild dog. Although poaching does still occur in Uganda, as it sadly does all over Africa, the wildlife is now receiving a serious level of protection and is recovering remarkably well in most areas. The 2012 Uganda Wildlife Authority figures fully support this recovery, as the populations of many large species have more than doubled since the previous census in 1999, with the number of impala rising from around 1,600 to over 35,000. Elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippo and waterbuck populations have all increased significantly, confirming what those of us visiting regularly already knew, the animals are returning and Uganda is once again featuring as one of the top wildlife destinations on this or any other continent.

Box 7062, Kampala, Uganda Corresponding author: [email protected] ABSTRACT This study identified the carbon sequestration potential of the most valued trees species by farmers in Mayuge district, Uganda. Composite soil samples were collected 1.5 to 2 m away from the tree trunk for carbon content and bulk density at two different soil depths (0-15 cm and 15-30 cm). Soil samples were collected from eight trees of each species, 8-10 years old, on a lixic ferralsol within a radius of 5 km, occurring in different land-use types including land which had been under fallow for 8-10 years. Soil carbon stock did not significantly vary between the different trees and averaged 31.54 Mg ha-1 and 27.05 Mg ha-1 for 0-15 cm and 15-30 cm soil depth, respectively. The effect of land-use and depth on soil carbon stock varied with tree species (p<0.05). Implications of these findings to future studies in Agroforestry as well as to communities in the Lake Victoria rural landscapes are discussed in this paper.     THE REPUBLIC OF UGANDA MINISTRY OF HEALTH PRESS STATEMENT UPDATE ON COVID-19 RESPONSE IN UGANDA 22 December 2020 Dr. Joyce Moriku Kaducu Minister of State for Health in charge of Primary Health Care 22nd December 2020 - The Ministry of Health would like to update the general public on the status of the COVID-19Pandemic in Uganda. OVERVIEW OF COVID-19 - THE NEW VARIANT STRAIN The Ministry of Health is closely followingthe global trends of a new variant strain (501. V2) of SARSCoV-2that has been reported in the United Kingdom, other parts of Europe and now South Africa and Nigeria. It has been shown to spread much faster but so far no evidence of high severity than the first strain. So far, we know that the new variant strain is spreading faster than what we experienced in the 1st wave. It is important to note that this new variant strain has NOT been reported in Uganda. The Ministry of Health working with regional partners, Africa CDC through Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI)will start genome surveillance for the new strain to determine its prevalence in the country. However, we know that the transmission of the virusxand the control measures remain the same as the virus in the 1st wave. i.e. Consistent mask use, social distancing and good hand hygiene. COVID-19 IN UGANDA As you are all aware, Uganda is in phase 4 of the pandemic. This means that there is intense and widespread community transmission of COVID-19in nearly all districts and with occasional and emerging hotspots.
