  • Legion of Frontiersmen Notebook
Legion of Frontiersmen Notebook Includes over 30 pages with maps, charts, images and about 300 referenced historical entries Part I - General Information Part II - Referenced Timeline Part III - Uniform and Accoutrements ©Barry William Shandro M.Ed – Edmonton Canada – 01 January 2017 1 Foreword This is a personal notebook. Hopefully, this cache of information from a Canadian perspective assists with understanding the enigmatic Legion of Frontiersmen. This document is not intended for commercial reproduction nor is it intended for sale; however, the reader is most welcome to use this information as a starting point for further research. Please credit the original sources of information noted. Four decades ago I began to hear stories about the Legion of Frontiersmen from First and Second World War veterans. These accounts seemed questionable so I began a long process of investigating these claims and looking for informative sources. – To my surprise much of the verbal lore was confirmed with news quotations, documents, photos or addressed in rediscovered Frontiersmen publications. Concurrent to my efforts, the members of the History and Archives Section, Legion of Frontiersmen [Countess Mountbatten’s Own] willingly discussed their respective efforts to rediscover and preserve a very unique piece of Imperial history. Spearheaded by the Legion Historian, Geoffrey A. Pocock [Outrider of Empire, University of Alberta Press] a great deal of material has been placed online - see The Frontiersmen Historian. Additionally, the University of Alberta has been most helpful as the repository of Legion of Frontiersmen related documents. Finally, the grammatical errors and technical writing irregularities have been inserted to see if you are paying attention.

  • Independence and Freedom
The Last Lap: Independence and Freedom r"$' IThe title of this chapter really says it all: what mattered most in attaining independence was that this ushered in experimental years of internal freedom. Many ex-colonies - too many - obtained independence and became unfit to live in, producing refugees by the thousand. That certainly did not happen in Borg Olivier's Malta.1 By 1969 emigration reached rock bottom, return migration grew, settlers came to Malta from overseas. The economy boomed, creating problems of a different kind in its wake. But these were not so much problems of freedom as of economic well-being and learning to live together and to pull through: there was no repression whatsoever.1 On the contrary the MLP criticism (and a popular joke) was this: tgliajjatx gliax tqajjem il-gvem! Government became rather inconspicuous, unobtrusive, intruding only perhaps by a certain apathy, as well as increasingly a lagging commitment on the part of Borg Olivier's ageing team, especially after 1969. Borg Olivier himself, having attained independence, was no longer at his prime, and his unfortunate private and family foibles did nothing to enhance his delivery. In spite of all that, the election result in 1971 was a very close shave indeed. The Nationalist Party, in government since 1962, did not even have a daily newspaper until 1970, on the eve of the election! By contrast the GWU daily L-Orizzont, started in 1962, and other pro-MLP organs lambasted the Borg 230 Malta's Quest for Independence Olivier administration constantly, and frequently enough, mercilessly. 1970 also saw the use of the GWU strike as a full-scale political weapon when dockyard workers were ordered to strike for months, disrupting the island's major industry mainly on the issue of flexibility.

  • The Transformation of a National Culture : Towards a Two Party System
Chapter VII THE TRANSFORMATION OF A NATIONAL CULTURE: TOWARDS A TWO PARTY SYSTEM In the early 1920'S Malta was more urbanized, less agricultural, rather more secular-minded than half-a-century earlier. There was a greater national and social consciousness, especially among industrial workers and lower grade employees. Economic policy began seriously to command the attention of politicians. Malta had better communications, more schools, was cleaner, and above all, felt reasonably free. Although certain topics of conversation and dispute were as familiar as the names of the party leaders, the grant of self-government marked a sense of achievement and naturally was accompanied by a determination to tackle the country's problems from a position of authority and responsibility. The theme of 'taxation without representation' could no longer apply: to that extent the often blind op position to taxes receded into the background. Similarly, the constant claims for constitutional reform had now been very largely met: to that extent the constitutional problem was solved. 'Religious' problems were almost non-existent: anticlericalism in nationalist politics had originated from criticism of the church hierarchy rather than from different religious views or beliefs - securalisation had affected attitudes to government rather than to religion - and the danger of proselytism was no longer presen t, now the government had control over activities by Protestant groups and churches. In 1921 (as in 1887) all parties were agreed that Roman Catholic ism should be Malta's established religion. But the earlier patriotic con sensus with regard to the Italian language did not exist: the language question, with its multifold connotations and repercussions, was still at the fore of public debate, just as a religious disposition continued to be central to the way of life.

As an amateur collector of maps and with a love of history in general I thought that it might be useful to have a map depicting historical events pertaining to South Africa from the arrival of the first visitors and settlers to the present day. The following is a very brief description of the historical events that have shaped South Africa. I have also included some events that greatly changed the life of the inhabitants of South Africa such as the discovery of Diamonds and Gold in the interior. By following the events below and referring to the symbols linked to these events on the Excel spreadsheet as a guide the reader can see where the specific history has taken place. The Provincial maps include the symbols and are also listed on the Excel spreadsheet as an easy reference in order to locate their whereabouts. Please note that I am not a writer and the following information has been gleaned from the internet, largely from Wikipedia.
