Ahora, y con el mismo coor- dinador, presentamos un tercer informe que es, en parte, el paisaje tras la batalla de la durísima crisis económica y social que hemos sufrido en estos últimos años. Una crisis que, en el caso del libro, ha implicado que los hábitos lectores de los españoles no hayan experimentado el fortalecimiento que desearíamos. Ya en aquel primer informe se echaba de ver el convencimiento implícito de que una sociedad lectora es una sociedad que prospera, material y hasta, si me per- miten la expresión, espiritualmente. Y así parecen seguir indicándolo la mayoría de las estadísticas internacionales, pues la capacidad de comprensión lectora es con- sustancial al desarrollo humano y la llave que abre la puerta de la información y el conocimiento. El libro es una extensión de nuestra imaginación y nuestra inteligencia, el mayor instrumento de civilización y un eficaz aliado para el ocio y el estudio. Leer, senci- llamente, nos ayuda a vivir y nos permite llevar más lejos y trascender nuestras vi- das. Sin embargo, la lectura no es, digámoslo claro, una pasión española. Y por más que hayamos mejorado en tantas y tantas cosas, también en los índices de alfabeti- zación, sigue existiendo un importante número de compatriotas que no leen libros ni tienen interés en ellos. Es más, una parte significativa de nuestra población no pisa jamás una librería, como tampoco entra en un museo. Evidentemente, no será este modesto informe el que cambie las cosas, pero sí puede servir de estímulo para las necesarias iniciativas públicas y privadas. Hace ya un año que la Cámara del Libro de España presentó el Plan integral para el fomento del libro y de la lectura que pretendía sistematizar las posibles iniciati- vas públicas y privadas para que fueran, al menos, tenidas en cuenta. Y ello se hizo con la participación de editores, distribuidores, libreros y hasta la industria gráfica y contando, por supuesto, con la opinión de autores de referencia. Probablemente todos somos conscientes de que el interés por la lectura se despierta en las familias y en la escuela, por lo que un pacto nacional por la educación es un primer paso imprescindible, que debería volver a situar las horas de lectura y el desarrollo de las bibliotecas de aula y el propio deseo de cada alumno de poseer una biblioteca per- sonal, en el centro del tablero educativo, que es donde, al fin y al cabo, nos juga- mos nuestro futuro como sociedad. 9 PRESENTACIÓN El argentino canadiense (o viceversa) Alberto Manguel inaugura, junto con Da- río Villanueva, el director de nuestra Real Academia Española, este volumen, en el que se mantienen, siguiendo el esquema de los informes anteriores, diversos estu- dios y trabajos monográficos sobre las bibliotecas, la oferta editorial, las librerías o los hábitos lectores de los españoles. Por supuesto, el lugar o no lugar que ocupa la lectura en el sistema educativo sigue siendo un momento destacable del informe. Y dada la situación actual y el cierre de librerías —aunque hayan nacido otras— o la irrupción en nuestras vidas de las pantallas de los teléfonos con conexión a la Red, se ha prestado atención a los clubes de lectura, a los sistemas de recomendación de lecturas y libros en la Web y la interrelación entre las distintas formas de ocio con las que convivimos: juegos, películas, series, entre otros fenómenos. El informe ha pretendido ser lo más amplio posible, pese a las limitaciones de todo tipo del momento actual, a fin de intentar entender mejor una realidad en la que ya somos todos lectores digitales y en papel, aunque tal vez eso mismo sea una exageración, porque en los transportes públicos casi todo viajero anda inmerso en su pantallita y no todos están, desde luego, leyendo. Habrá que recordar, en ese sentido, que ya en la edición del año 2008 este in- forme estuvo en la Red y a disposición de cualquier curioso, porque hace ya tiempo que los editores sabemos que seguimos siendo editores en cualquier soporte. Y los agoreros, que pronosticaban el fin inmediato de la edición en papel hace ya una dé- cada, a estas alturas han quedado como aquellos predicadores del fin del mundo a los que se les va pasando una fecha y otra y otra. El mundo no se acabaría, nos dicen algunos, si no hubiera libros. Y ahí debe- mos discrepar, porque sin libros, sin su lectura, el mundo sería otro y es de temer que no mejor. Leer nos ayuda a ser y mejora nuestro estar. Leer nos permite decir, con Borges, «que otros se enorgullezcan por lo que han escrito, yo me enorgullezco por lo que he leído». Nuestras lecturas son, al final, las vidas que hemos vivido en esta vida nuestra, tan corta o tan larga según las horas que hayamos sabido pasar con un buen libro. Permítanme terminar con el inexcusable capítulo de agradecimientos.     https://doi.org/10.26262/gramma.v21i0.6284 145 Books in Pieces: Granger, History, and the Collection Michael Macovski This article analyzes the influence of James Granger’s Biographical His- tory of England (1769), a volume that spearheaded a remarkable praxis of collecting, interleaving, and rebinding during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This praxis reflects not only radical changes in concepts of col- lecting during this period, but also three central dimensions of book his- tory. These include the era’s passion for artefactual collections; its propen- sity for annotative forms, such as marginalia and prefaces; and its burgeon- ing publication of compilatory, systematized texts—such as catalogues, al- manacs, encyclopedias, and other compendium forms. The article goes on to suggest that grangerized texts extend beyond simple, stochastic gather- ings to reveal key precepts of historiographic continuity, serialized succes- sion, ekphrastic reproduction, and synoptic collectivity. I. he general outlines of the remarkable James Granger story are, in some respects, familiar: in 1769, the provincial parson publishes his Biogra- T phical History of England—a single volume that lists many portraits but contains not a single illustration. Almost immediately, the book spearheads one of the most curious movements in eighteenth-century history—a practice in which collectors acquire many prints listed by Granger, and many additional ones as well. The praxis also encompasses a veritable maelstrom of interleav- ing—which in turn gives rise to, among other terms, the verb “to grangerize,” though this term does not emerge until 1882.1 Yet such a praxis also extends beyond the initial act of interleaving.

Wieringa AbstrAct Since 2018 the private collection of Ben Mboi (1935-2015), who is best known as Governor of East Nusa Tenggara – NTT – from 1978 to 1988, has been part of the Library of Atma Jaya Catholic University in Jakarta, where it is publicly accessible under the name of Ben Mboi Research Library. The collection totals 22,890 items; the majority of the books are written in English, Indonesian, and Dutch. After briefy introducing the life and work of Ben Mboi, this article frst discusses the phenomenon of private libraries in Indonesia, making it clear that Mboi’s collection is highly unusual. The main part of the paper explores the question as to what is specifcally “Mboian” about the library and what it tells us about his mindset. Mboi’s library functioned as a collection for a working mind and the essay focuses on his books dealing with good governance, which increasinGly occupied Mboi’s mind after he entered the world of politics. Special attention is paid to reader’s marks and annotations: Mboi read his books from a decidedly Indonesian perspective. This is particularly evident in the case of Dutch books written by Dutch academics on contemporary Dutch society, which Mboi studied intensively in order to refect upon the situation in post-Suharto Indonesia. Mboi’s own political thinking, which advocated elitism and organicist statecraft, conformed to mainstream ideological discourse in the New Order, but is still de rigueur in post-Suharto Indonesia, showing a remarkable overlap with colonial ideas about leadership in the period of Dutch high imperialism.

On behalf of both Prize of the 2018 Melbourne Rare Book ANZAAB and RBM, I thank all the 25 MRBW partners, and their Fair. The prize of $500 redeemable with speakers, for staging 45 wonderful events which included lectures, any ANZAAB member. A full report of the exhibitions, workshops, musical performances, presentations and Fair can be found starting on p. 21 inside. discussions. It is very pleasing to see that MRBW is drawing interstate visitors and has become a noteworthy event in the Melbourne literary calendar. While reading, people let their guard down and it is in this moment of relaxed rumination that scholars can piece together a reader‘s reaction to what they are reading. In the context of my study, how Dr. Halpert read and what he noted takes priority over the subject and significance of the books and the authors. Through a random sample of 1.54% of the collection, I will draw preliminary conclusions about Dr. Halpert‘s thoughts and responses to his books. Wing There is one member of the Fraternity of Book Collectors who has of late years rather fallen in the estimation of his brother Bibliophiles. This knight of the shears and paste jar… is known in bookman’s parlance as the Grangerite. The title never has been understood to indicate exalted bibliophilic rank, and now, alas! the indi- vidual who bears it appears to be upon the point of losing all honorary distinction whatever in the little world of the book collector. —W. Andrews, Of the Extra-Illustration of Books John Mansir Wing, one of Chicago’s great library benefactors, was an unrepentant Grangerite who for the last thirty years of his life pursued his two major hobbies: book collecting and extra-illustration. Born the son of a blacksmith in upstate New York in 1844, Wing spent his entire adult life around print, taking a job as a printer’s devil when he was sixteen, and later working as a typesetter, printer and reporter for various newspapers in New York State. In June 1865 he moved to Chicago, where he worked as a freelance reporter for both the Chicago Tribune and the Times. In 1869, Wing began publishing The Land Owner, a real estate magazine. Although publication of The Land Owner ceased in 1877, Wing was already working on another magazine, The Western Brewer, concerning the grain market and brewery production. It should be noted that both of Wing’s magazines, along with many of his other publishing endeavors, were essentially pastiche, consisting of “part news, part advertisements, and part puff.”1 In 1888, one year after the establishment of the Newberry Library—an event Wing documented in one of his scrapbooks—he retired at the age of forty-four.
