DALLAS, Texas (September 12, 2013) – The Nasher Sculpture Center is pleased to announce that the JFK commemorative Soundings concert will be performed at City Performance Hall. Season tickets to Soundings are now on sale with guaranteed seating to the special concert honoring President Kennedy on the 50th anniversary of his death with an important new work by internationally renowned composer Steven Mackey. One Red Rose is written for the Brentano String Quartet in commemoration of this anniversary, and is commissioned by the Nasher (Dallas, TX) with Carnegie Hall (New York, NY) and Yellow Barn (Putney, VT). The concert will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at 7:30 pm at City Performance Hall with celebrated musicians; the Brentano String Quartet, clarinetist Charles Neidich and pianist Seth Knopp. Mr. Mackey’s One Red Rose will be performed along with seminal works by Olivier Messiaen and John Cage.     Les Talens Lyriques Les Talens Lyriques ont 30 ans ! ui, nous célébrerons cet anniversaire coûte que coûte. O Quelle longévité ! Je ne l’aurais moi-même jamais espé- rée. Comment m’imaginer diriger tant d’opéras, italiens et français, comment imaginer Les Talens à l’opéra de Sydney, de Versailles ou de Drottningholm, comment aurais-je pu me voir diriger du Berlioz, du Verdi, du Gounod ? Ma grande satisfaction est d’avoir tenu ma ligne entre la France et l’Italie, d’avoir pu éviter l’effet pour l’effet, d’avoir pris des risques avec les trompettistes mais aussi les cornistes et autres aventuriers du baroque pour retrouver les techniques et les sonorités « justes ». Je ne rougis d’aucune eau dans le vin que je respecte trop pour l’édulcorer. Cette saison marquera aussi nos 15 ans d’actions pédagogiques dans les écoles et les collèges. Aujourd’hui, les partenariats se transforment et se multiplient, de nou- veaux projets se développent dans ce souci de transmis- sion qui m’est si cher. Bien sûr, tous ces accomplissements ne seraient pos- sibles sans l’aide de nos partenaires qui nous soutiennent fidèlement depuis de nombreuses années. Sans eux, Les Talens Lyriques n’auraient pu mener à bien tous ces beaux projets. Qu’ils en soient ici très chaleureusement remerciés. Et merci à vous cher public pour votre présence pas- sionnée à nos côtés depuis toutes ces années. Vous me manquez, et j’ai hâte de vous retrouver ! Et maintenant : que la fête commence ! Cette saison justement rassemble ce qui est le cœur de notre vocation : 3 beaucoup d’opéras, surtout méconnus ; de la musique de chambre (car le claveciniste que je suis tient à rester aussi chambriste) ; des récitals de jeunes chanteurs (car découvrir de nouveaux talents est aussi notre marque de fabrique) ; et des incursions dans le romantisme.

This album was “Gerry Mulligan & Astor Piazzolla”. But it was through “Song for Strayhorn” (Carnegie Hall concert CTI album) I fell in love with the music of Gerry Mulligan. My impressions were: “How great this man is to be able to compose so nicely!, to improvise so marvellously! and to give us such feelings!” Step by step my interest for the music increased I bought regularly his albums and I became crazy from the Concert Jazz Band LPs. Then I appreciated the pianoless Quartets with Bob Brookmeyer (The Pleyel Concerts, which are easily available in France) and with Chet Baker. Just married with Danielle, I spent some days of our honey moon at Antwerp (Belgium) and I had the chance to see the Gerry Mulligan Orchestra in concert. After the concert my wife said: “During some songs I had lost you, you were with the music of Gerry Mulligan!!!” During these 30 years of travel in the music of Jeru, I bought many bootleg albums. One was very important, because it gave me a new direction in my passion: the discographical part. This was the album “Gerry Mulligan – Vol. 2, Live in Stockholm, May 1957”.

I am one of Mr. Turley's "few people" who follow The New Yorker and are jazz lovers, and I find in Whitney Bal- liett's writing some of the sharpest and best jazz criticism in the field. He has not been duped with "funk" in its pseudo-gospel hard-boppish world, or- with the banal playing and writing of some of the "cool school" Californians. He does believe, and rightly so, that a fine jazz performance erases the bound• aries of jazz "movements" or fads. He seems to be able to spot insincerity in any phalanx of jazz musicians. And he has yet to be blinded by the name of a "great"; his recent column on Bil- lie Holiday is the most clear-headed analysis I have seen, free of the fan- magazine hero-worship which seems to have been the order of the day in the trade. It is true that a great singer has passed away, but it does the late Miss Holiday's reputation no good not to ad• LETTERS mit that some of her later efforts were (dare I say it?) not up to her earlier work in quality. But I digress. In Mr. Balliett's case, his ability as a critic is added to his admitted "skill with words" (Turley). He is making a sincere effort to write rather than play jazz; to improvise with words,, rather than notes. A jazz fan, in order to "dig" a given solo, unwittingly knows a little about the equipment: the tune being improvised to, the chord struc• ture, the mechanics of the instrument, etc.

    FEMALE CLASSICAL COMPOSERS from past to present ʻFreed from the shackles and tatters of the old tradition and prejudice, American and European women in music are now universally hailed as important factors in the concert and teaching fields and as … fast developing assets in the creative spheres of the profession.’ This affirmation was made in 1935 by Frédérique Petrides, the Belgian-born female violinist, conductor, teacher and publisher who was a pioneering advocate for women in music. Some 80 years on, it’s gratifying to note how her words have been rewarded with substance in this catalogue of music by women composers. Petrides was able to look back on the foundations laid by those who were well-connected by family name, such as Clara Schumann and Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel, and survey the crop of composers active in her own time, including Louise Talma and Amy Beach in America, Rebecca Clarke and Liza Lehmann in England, Nadia Boulanger in France and Lou Koster in Luxembourg. She could hardly have foreseen, however, the creative explosion in the latter half of the 20th century generated by a whole new raft of female composers – a happy development that continues today. We hope you will enjoy exploring this catalogue that has not only historical depth but a truly international voice, as exemplified in the works of the significant number of 21st-century composers: be it the highly colourful and accessible American chamber music of Jennifer Higdon, the Asian hues of Vivian Fung’s imaginative scores, the ancient-and-modern syntheses of Sofia Gubaidulina, or the hallmark symphonic sounds of the Russian-born Alla Pavlova.
