FOCUS ON DANCE EDUCATION: Engaging in the Artistic Processes: Creating, Performing, Responding, Connecting In Partnership with the International Guild of Musicians in Dance (IGMID) 17th Annual Conference October 7-11, 2015 Phoenix, Arizona CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS National Dance Education Organization Kirsten Harvey, MFA Editor Focus on Dance Education: Engaging in the Artistic Processes: Creating Performing, Responding, Connecting Editorial Introduction In October 2015, the National Dance Education Organization met for their annual conference in Phoenix, Arizona to celebrate and honor the legacy, and individuality of the NDEO dance community. The warm spirit of Phoenix resonated with each educator and artist that came together at the beautiful Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort. Over 150 workshops, papers presentations, panels, master classes, social events, and performances were offered including full day pre-conference intensives that preceded the official start of the conference. The range of offerings for dance educators included a variety of experiences to foster inspiration, education, response, dialogue and connection to one another. Contributions to Focus on Dance Education: Engaging in the Artistic Processes: Creating Performing, Responding, Connecting Conference Proceedings include paper presentations, panel discussions, workshops, and movement sessions presented from October 7-11, 2015. The proceedings include 4 abstracts, 9 full papers, 6 movement session summaries, 6 summary of workshop presentations, 2 panel discussion summaries, and 1 special interest group summary. One of the broadest ranges of submissions since I have been editing the proceedings. The NDEO top paper selection committee selected Caroline Clark’s paper titled “We Learned to Perform by Performing: Oral Histories of Ballet Dancers in a Beer Hall” for the Top Paper Citation. -

The Dance-In and the Re/production of White Corporeality Anthea Kraut, University of California, Riverside Abstract This essay examines the figure of the “dance-in,” a stand-in who dances in place of a star prior to filming, focusing on two women who acted as surrogates and dance coaches for the mid-twentieth century white film star Betty Grable: a white woman named Angie Blue and an African American woman named Marie Bryant. Bringing together film studies theories of indexicality, performance studies theories of surrogation, and critical race theories of flesh and body, I argue that the dance-in helps expose how the fiction of white corporeality as a bounded and autonomous mode of being is maintained. Now comes Shirley Temple, youngest star of them all, with a new kind of stand-in – a dance stand-in. Marilyn Harper, one of the Meglin Kiddies, is Shirley’s dance stand-in. Introduction. Today, India is one of the world’s fastest growing economies and, increasingly, an industrial and service-oriented economy.1 Reflecting this, between 2001 and 2008 India’s urban population increased from 290 million to 340 million. Yet, India remains under-urbanized relative to her income level, leading to widespread expectations of large-scale rural-to-urban migration in coming years (McKinsey Global Institute 2010). Some estimates suggest that the urban population may be close to 600 million by 2030 (High Powered Expert Committee 2011). Many countries have stumbled in the transition from lower-middle income to higher-middle income status, experiencing growth slowdowns as they failed to effect the institutional and infrastructural changes necessary to support this shift. In the case of India, it is likely that the critical changes will be in the governance of urban areas and the provision of services to the growing numbers of migrants settling in urban slums. This paper uses detailed survey data on the quality of social services available to Delhi slum-dwellers to highlight the governance constraints currently faced by low- income households in a large Indian city and to provide evidence on some of the contributing factors. Delhi is India’s second largest metropolis, with a population of around 18 million (High Powered Expert Committee 2011).
