*LRB10017986ALS33171r* HR0815 LRB100 17986 ALS 33171 r 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives wish to recognize the work and accomplishments 4 of Tyehimba Jess; and 5 WHEREAS, Tyehimba Jess grew up in Detroit, Michigan and 6 started writing poetry at the age of 16; when he was 18, he won 7 second prize for poetry at an NAACP academic competition; he 8 enrolled in the University of Chicago to study Public Policy; 9 however, when taking classes with poet and scholar Sterling 10 Plumpp, who became his mentor, he realized his real passion was 11 for poetry; he graduated from the University of Chicago in 1991 12 with a bachelor's degree in public policy; he earned his Master 13 of Fine Arts from New York University in 2004; and 14 WHEREAS, Tyehimba Jess is the author of two books of 15 poetry, Leadbelly and Olio; his inspiration for writing stems 16 from his desire to convey historical themes through expression 17 and performance; and 18 WHEREAS, Tyehimba Jess has won many awards, including the 19 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Olio, an Illinois Arts Council 20 Fellowship in Poetry, the Chicago Sun-Times Poetry Award, and a 21 Whiting Fellowship; his work has appeared in Soul Fires: Young 22 Black Men on Love and Violence, Obsidian III: Literature in the HR0815 -2- LRB100 17986 ALS 33171 r 1 African Diaspora, and Power Lines: Ten Years of Poetry from 2 Chicago's Guild Complex; and 3 WHEREAS, Tyehimba Jess teaches poetry and fiction at the 4 College of Staten Island of the City University of New York and 5 is the faculty adviser for Caesura, the college's literary arts 6 magazine; therefore, be it 7 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE 8 HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 9 recognize the contributions Tyehimba Jess has made to the 10 literary world and to the people of Illinois, and we 11 congratulate him on his 2017 Pulitzer Prize; and be it further 12 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 13 presented to Tyehimba Jess as a symbol of our esteem and 14 respect..

The Political Lyric Seen from one angle, the idea of a “political lyric” is an altogether familiar one. From their Western inception, lyric poems, like their dra- matic and epic counterparts, had a public role to play, as in Pindar’s celebratory odes. Milton, Wordsworth, and Yeats all composed works that combined reflection on the most fraught public confrontations of their day with the emotional intensity and linguistic compression often considered hallmarks of the lyric genre. In a more abstruse vein, a political content has often been descried in the genre of lyric 106 itself, and even in its more manifestly apolitical specimens. Hegel, for instance, maintains that a moment of universality, of potential public communion, is essential to the poetic status of a lyric: “how- ever intimately the insights and feelings which the poet describes as his own belong to him as a single individual, they must nevertheless possess a universal validity.”1 In a related vein, Adorno states that “the universality of the lyric’s substance…is social in nature. Only one who hears the voice of humankind in the poem’s solitude can understand what the poem is saying.”2 No matter how resolutely a poet professes art for art’s sake, on such a line, to write a lyric is to engage in a fundamentally political practice.

Ana Božičević Born in Zagreb, Croatia, Božičević emigrated to New York City in 1997 and studied at Hunter College. She is the author of several chapbooks, including Morning News (2006) and Document (2007). Her first book-length collection, Stars of the Night Commute (2009) was Lambda Literary Award finalist, and her second book Rise in the Fall (2013) won a Lambda Literary Award. Travelers and messengers figure in Božičević’s dreamlike poems of shifting diction, narrative, and settings. Chris Tonelli, reviewing the chapbook Document, commented that “by expertly combining the rhetoric of narrative with the agility of surrealism, Božičević creates a landscape, and a cast of characters within that landscape, for which flux is the only stable thing.” Božičević has worked for the PEN American Center and the Center for the Humanities of the Graduate Center, CUNY. Olio is an effort to understand how they met, resisted, complicated, co-opted, and sometimes defeated attempts to minstrelize them. So, while I lead this choir, I still find that I'm being led…I'm a missionary mending my faith in the midst of this flock… I toil in their fields of praise. When folks see these freedmen stand and sing, they hear their God speak in tongues. These nine dark mouths sing shelter; they echo a hymn's haven from slavery's weather. Detroit native Tyehimba Jess' first book of poetry, leadbelly, was a winner of the 2004 National Poetry Series. Jess, a Cave Canem and NYU Alumni, has received fellowships from the Whiting Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, Illinois Arts Council, and the Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center. Jess is also a veteran of the 2000 and 2001 Green Mill Poetry Slam Team. He exhibited his poetry at the 2011 TEDxNashville Conference. Like the other volumes in the series, Contemporary Poets presents profiles of major poets with sections on the poet’s biography and an analysis of the poet’s most important poems or collections. Also included is a comprehensive list of the poet’s major works. Although the profiled authors may have written in other genres as well, sometimes to great acclaim, the focus of this set is on their most important works of poetry. The landscape of contemporary poetry is potentially more varied, and its practitioners more diverse, than at any other period in the history of the genre. An effective but by no means complete survey of this variety can be had by pointing to a number of developments that took place in the last decades of the twentieth century and the first decades of the twenty-first. First, American poetry began to explore a number of alternative approaches to the “confessional” style that had been popular from the 1960s onward. Second, writing and publishing poetry became increasingly professionalized through the emergence of creative writing programs at hundreds of universities. Third, under the influence of the Language poets and of the early New York poets, poetry became more ironic, disjunctive, and pop-cultural than ever before.
