    SALA AIXELÁ (1959-1975) A pioneering venue that played a part in the reconstruction of a modernity that the Franco dictatorship interrupted, Aixelá created a model in which cultural experimentation coexisted alongside a commercial offering. Between 1959 and 1975, under the direction of the critic Josep Maria Casademont, it was a meeting place and a platform for promoting photography, comics, mainstream and independent films and the latest trends in music. 23.11.2019 – 16.02.2020 IN STRUGGLE FOR LIVING ART Laura Terré About Aixelá Back in the 1960s—and just as it is now and indeed at all times —Barcelona was a living and relatively healthy organism. Every neighbourhood was an organ essential to its survival. At its centre was its privileged heart. And very nearby, its lungs. Of which there were an untold number. One of these was Aixelá. It was not known how big or small this lung was until it began to inflate. Then—and this is why it was so im- portant—it gradually began to return the air it had processed. It flushed enriched blood throughout an entire body that was able to work, to move. Even to think. Before all this, however, the father of the Aixelá family ran a photographic shop called Alexandre on Carrer de Sant Pau. One of his sons, Francisco Aixelá Duc, who was 36 at the time, decided to improve and modernise the operation by opening an extension of the family shop ‘above’ Plaça de Catalunya in order to appeal to a better class of customer. The Aixelás, who in their day had already bought Lázaro, a photographic business formerly called Cosmos Fotográfico Fernández on Carrer dels Tallers that had supplied the Royal Household back in the 19th century, aspired to give the new Aixelá an up-to-date, innovative image, an elegant, contem- porary architecture, finishes in luxury materials, large shop windows, especially-designed furnishings and exclusive uni- forms for the staff.

Ollerías, 34. 29012 Málaga 1 http://www.malaga.es/generaciondel27/ El Centro Cultural Generación del 27, institución dependiente de la Delegación de Cultura y Deportes de la Diputación Provincial de Málaga, ha preparado su programa cultural para el primer cuatrimestre del año siguiendo los criterios con los que en esta nueva etapa del Centro, desde enero de 2012, se viene trabajando. Por una parte, se insiste en que la programación del Centro del 27 llegue hasta la mayor parte de los municipios de la provincia, de ahí que en este primer cuatrimestre se organicen 17 actividades fuera de la capital; en concreto estaremos presentes con actos de nuestros distintos ciclos en las localidades de Fuengirola, Periana, El Borge, Nerja, Benalmádena (pueblo y costa), La Viñuela, Torremolinos, Frigiliana, Álora, Rincón de la Victoria, Colmenar, Cómpeta, Alozaina, Iznate, Alhaurín de la Torre y Coín, muchas de las cuales es la primera vez que acogen una actividad del Centro Cultural Generación del 27. Por otra parte, queremos que la labor del Centro sea incesante y por ello vamos a realizar cerca de medio centenar de actividades en estos primeros cuatro meses del año; dichas actividades, como ya es habitual, son reflejo de diversas manifestaciones artísticas: la poesía, la narrativa, el ensayo, el cine, la fotografía, la música o la edición artesanal son protagonistas de nuestra oferta cultural. Una oferta que da continuidad a la mayor parte de los ciclos que se han creado hasta la fecha.

X BIENNAL DE FOTOGRAFIA XAVIER MISERACHS El 14 d’agost de 1998 ens deixava Xavier Miserachs, i un any després naixia la Biennal de Fotografia Xavier Miserachs com a homenatge al fotògraf que n’ha inspirat i acompanyat totes les edicions. Han passat 20 anys, i moltes coses aleshores inimaginables. El desenvolupament imparable de les noves tecnologies de la comu- nicació, la rellevància adquirida per Internet i les xarxes socials, el protagonisme i l’allau d’imatges que es generen de manera incessant, els avenços tecnològics per explicar històries, la demo- cratització de la fotografia, el periodisme ciutadà... han canviat la manera de fer i observar la fotografia. Però també hem vist la progressiva desaparició d’espais per a la fotografia en els mitjans tradicionals, la banalització de les imat- ges i, malgrat les possibilitats que ofereixen els nous canals de comunicació, la manca de llocs destinats a la fotografia rigorosa, veraç, honesta i compromesa. 2 La Biennal de Fotografia Xavier Miserachs vol continuar reivin- dicant-se com una plataforma per a la difusió de la fotografia documental, fidel a l’objectiu que l’ha animat i perseguit des de la seva primera edició. Per celebrar que hem arribat fins aquí, presentem un programa de luxe que de ben segur el mateix Xavier Miserachs hauria aprovat: els retrats magistrals d’Atín Aya; dues mirades amb nom de dona, el segell personal inspirat en els clàssics de Sandra Balsells i la delicadesa de Maria Contreras Coll; el testimoni rigorós i neces- sari de Samuel Aranda i Lorenzo Meloni; el fotoperiodisme com- promès de Miquel Dewever-Plana; el documentalisme més proper de Joan Alvado; la memòria del passat dels pioners Jaume Ferrer i Josep Esquirol; la ironia i intel·ligència de Xavier Miserachs, i Henri Cartier-Bresson, simplement fotografia i en majúscules.

Spain 1905-1977 is a history of Spanish photography through a selection of its best photobooks, many of them little known. The exhibition, organized by the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía and Acción Cultural Española (AC/E), is the result of a line of acquisitions and research undertaken by the Museum’s Department of Collections with the collaboration of Horacio Fernández, curator of the exhibition. This exhibition offers a new perspective on Spanish photography during its most important period through the work of photographers like Luis Acosta Moro, Alfonso, Jalón Ángel, Antonio Cánovas, Robert Capa, Francesc Català-Roca, Colita, Joan Colom, José Compte, Salvador Costa, Ramón Masats, Xavier Miserachs, Misiones Pedagógicas, Fernando Nuño, Francisco Ontañón, José Ortiz Echagüe, Joaquín del Palacio, Enrique Palazuelo and Leopoldo Pomés. photobooks. Spain 1905-1977 shows works published in Spain between 1905 and 1977—in different styles, in limited or mass editions, printed using refined techniques or on inexpensive paper, for all audiences or for minorities. They are about people, things, behaviors, and ideas. photobooks were few and far between at the start of the twentieth century, increased in number during the war, and reached their height of development in the sixties. They subsequently grew scarce, only to make a triumphal comeback in the new century, represented in the Museum’s Library in the show Books that are Photos, Photos that are Books.
