Experienced staff will be on hand to provide structured activities and open play for neighborhood youth ages 8 to 18. The program runs from July 6th – August 20th (except where noted) and will be offered weeknights as indicated by the schedule below. Games and activities will be provided for younger children during the early portion of the evening, and for older teens during the later portion of the evening. The Prevention team will visit four parks on a weekly basis according to the schedule below. Registered participants take part in a variety of fun games and activities designed to teach positive behaviors and decision- making when it comes to drugs, alcohol, and other issues facing our youth today. Kids will also take part in the annual t-shirt design contest, and be eligible for a fun-filled night at a Skychiefs Game. Begins July 13th.

Participants are welcome to register for a number of events, including sprints, relays, hurdles, jumps, and throws. Ribbons will be awarded according to age group. The meets are a great opportunity for beginners and experienced runners alike. Come and discover YOUR personal best!!! Meets will be held (weather permitting) on June 7th and 21st, and July 5th and 19th. All meets will start at 6 p.m. Registration begins at 5:30.

3 Mobile Recreation Units …bringing the fun to YOUR neighborhood. Our mobile recreation units will be visiting city parks each week at the designated times, according to the schedule below. This program runs from July 6th to August 19th as the weather permits. All materials and/or equipment will be provided, so just bring yourself and your friends! All activities are open to children ages 8 to 15.

Sports Clinics I (Basketball) – At each site, clinic leaders will teach participants the fundamental skills of dribbling, passing, shooting, rebounding, and defending. These courses are the only two public golf courses located in the City of Syracuse and each are located minutes from downtown. The courses easily see 25,000 rounds of play each season, and offer not only open play but leagues as well. In addition, our courses attract many local schools and youth organizations whose children receive golf instruction. Several citywide Senior, Junior and Adult golf tournaments are offered as well. Participants are skill- tested at the first class and may be re-grouped to a different level and/or time. Classes follow American Red Cross swim program guidelines and are taught be certified instructors. Class offerings may vary by site or be canceled if minimum enrollment is not met. RESIDENCY AND AGE REQUIREMENTS WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED; PROOF OF AGE AND RESIDENCY ARE REQUIRED. Level Requirements Pre-K: 3-5 years of age Level I: at least 5 years old – no swimming experience. Level II: must be at least 5 years old and be able to float on front and back comfortably. Level III: must be able to swim 15 feet on front and back. Level IV: must be able to swim 30 feet on front and back; also must be able to perform elementary backstroke kick. Level V: must be 8 years old and be able to swim 25 yards front crawl and back crawl, 10 yards elementary backstroke and 10 yards scissors and breaststroke kicks. Classes held with sufficient enrollment at selected sites. Level VI: must be 10 years old and be able to swim 50 yards front and back crawl and 10 yards side and breast strokes. Salty Dogs Street Soccer Program The Salty Dogs Professional Soccer Club returns this summer with the popular “Soccer in the Streets” Clinics for city youth. When they’re not at P&C Stadium battling for the A League Championship, team members will be in our parks teaching the skills and behaviors that helped them to become professional soccer players. Clinics will include two hours of soccer drills, fun games, and educational activities. And, Salty himself will be on hand to greet the youngsters! Baseball Clinic Back by popular demand, the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Youth Programs is once again offering FREE half-day baseball clinics, led by local high school coaches Dave Appleton and Ted Klamm. Once again, the clinics will be open to the first 100 youth (age 8-15) to pre-register. Coaches will teach the fundamentals of hitting, throwing, and fielding, and lead fun, skill-building games. Seventy-five youth will participate in golf clinics run by the Professional Golf Association each Friday, for five weeks starting July 16th to August 13th. They will learn different aspects of the game, including etiquette, grip and swing techniques. The program is free, however there is a $25.00 holding fee that will be refunded if the participant attends all five sessions. The program includes breakfast, lunch and transportation. 15 Special Events City Parks Bike Tours The Syracuse Onondaga Cycling Coalition will once again lead a series of bicycle tours through and between several of our city’s most beautiful parks. The monthly Tours present
