Film Club Sky 328 Newsletter Freesat 306 MAY/JUNE 2020 Virgin 445
Freeview 81 Film Club Sky 328 newsletter Freesat 306 MAY/JUNE 2020 Virgin 445 Dear Supporters of Film and TV History, Hoping as usual that you are all safe and well in these troubled times. Our cinema doors are still well and truly open, I’m pleased to say, the channel has been transmitting 24 hours a day 7 days a week on air with a number of premières for you all and orders have been posted out to you all every day as normal. It’s looking like a difficult few months ahead with lack of advertising on the channel, as you all know it’s the adverts that help us pay for the channel to be transmitted to you all for free and without them it’s very difficult. But we are confident we can get over the next few months. All we ask is that you keep on spreading the word about the channel in any way you can. Our audiences are strong with 4 million viewers per week , but it’s spreading the word that’s going to help us get over this. Can you believe it Talking Pictures TV is FIVE Years Old later this month?! There’s some very interesting selections in this months newsletter. Firstly, a terrific deal on The Humphrey Jennings Collections – one of Britain’s greatest filmmakers. I know lots of you have enjoyed the shorts from the Imperial War Museum archive that we have brought to Talking Pictures and a selection of these can be found on these DVD collections. -

THE MUSE DONS KHAKI: AMER ICAN SONGS AND MUSIC OF WORLD WAR I by Jacquelin Joan .~~lly Thesis submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Maryland in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of :Master of Arts 1963 ( . I APPROVAL SHEET Title of Thesis: The Muse Dons Khaki: American Songs and Music of World War I Name of Candidate: Jacquelin Master of Date Approved: ojd1 / b J ABSTRACT Title of Thesis: The Muse Dons Khaki: American Songs and Music of World War I Jacquelin Joan Kelly, Master of Arts, 1963 Thesis directed by: Gordon w. Prange, Professor Department of History During the years 1917 and 1918 the United States participated in a 11 war to end all wars. 11 During the conflict the government deliberately enlisted the power of song both at home and on the fighting front to help in the great task of winning the war. The idea of organized singing in the training of the U. s. Arrrry was comparatively new at the time America entered Wor ld War I, but it soon came to be recognized as an integral part of the training itself. The government encouraged singing in the army both on marches and in leisure-time groups because it contributed substantially to the enjoyment, contentment and efficiency of the soldier. The ballads, however, that eased tired muscles after a long days march and boosted morale after a day of heavy fighting were not government sponsored songs, but parodies and GI folk songs that the Sammies themselves composed. -

The Kite Runner
THE KITE RUNNER by KHALED HOSSEINI Published 2003 Afghan Mellat Online Library www.afghan-mellat.org.uk _December 2001_ I became what I am today at the age of twelve, on a frigid overcast day in the winter of 1975. I remember the precise moment, crouching behind a crumbling mud wall, peeking into the alley near the frozen creek. That was a long time ago, but it's wrong what they say about the past, I've learned, about how you can bury it. Because the past claws its way out. Looking back now, I realize I have been peeking into that deserted alley for the last twenty-six years. One day last summer, my friend Rahim Khan called from Pakistan. He asked me to come see him. Standing in the kitchen with the receiver to my ear, I knew it wasn't just Rahim Khan on the line. It was my past of unatoned** sins. After I hung up, I went for a walk along Spreckels Lake on the northern edge of Golden Gate Park. The early-afternoon sun sparkled on the water where dozens of miniature boats sailed, propelled by a crisp breeze. Then I glanced up and saw a pair of kites, red with long blue tails, soaring in the sky. They danced high above the trees on the west end of the park, over the windmills, floating side by side like a pair of eyes looking down on San Francisco, the city I now call home. And suddenly Hassan's voice whispered in my head: _For you, a thousand times over._ Hassan the harelipped kite runner. -

New from Renown
Freeview 81 Film Club Sky 328 newsletter Freesat 306 JUNE/JULY 2020 Virgin 445 Dear Supporters of Film and TV History, As always hoping you are all well in these troubled times. We are still all locked in the projectionists box at The Bijou but fairing well. Firstly a big THANK YOU to all of you who have kept on spreading the word about the channel, we’ve seen articles in everything from The Scotsman to The Northern Echo, we’ve had people ringing LBC, BBC, people writing to all their clubs and society newsletters about us and a wonderful two page spread about us in The Observer a few weeks ago. If we could give you all a free choc ice and an ABC Minors badge and get you up on stage for your birthdays – we would! It is so very important and means a great deal to us, thank you. An excellent new DVD release for true British film industry lovers this month as we celebrate Nettlefold Studios and the British film making pioneer, Cecil Hepworth. This new DVD box set features a number of films made at Nettlefold Studios including the lost filmThe Turners of Prospect Road, all with optional subtitles. We have also included a short film of highlights of the day we held at Nettlefold Studios some years ago with Mike Read, William Russell (Sir Lancelot), and Dr Simon Brown, celebrating the history of the studios and the unveiling of a blue plaque dedicated to Cecil Hepworth. Just £20 for three discs full it’s a bargain! Speaking of Sir Lancelot, we are delighted that the days of TV heroes and villains are now back on British TV Screens.
