Page 1 GA 99 : Creighton, Luella Bruce, 1901- Luella Creighton fonds. - 1917-1990, predominant 1950-1990. - 1.5 m of textual records. - 71 photographs. Luella Bruce Creighton (1901-1996) was a Canadian author whose works, both fiction and non fiction, were published in the 1950's and 1960's. Born Luella Sanders Bruce on Aug. 25, 1901 in Stouffville, Ont., she taught in a rural school in 1920-1921 prior to attending Victoria College at the University of Toronto. She graduated with a BA in 1926 and married historian and writer Donald Creighton on June 23 of the same year. Her writings include High bright buggy wheels, McClelland & Stewart, 1951; Turn east, turn west, McClelland & Stewart, 1954; Canada, the struggle for empire (non-fiction), Dent, 1960; Canada, trial and triumph (non- fiction), Dent, 1963; Tecumseh, the story of the shawnee chief (juvenile biography), Macmillan, 1965; Miss Multipenny and Miss Crumb, Peal, 1966; The elegant Canadians (non- fiction), McClelland & Stewart, 1967; The hitching post, McClelland & Stewart, 1969. Luella Creighton died in 1996 [?]. The fonds contains a small amount of material documenting Luella Creighton's student days at Victoria College, University of Toronto, 1924-1926. Her personal life is further documented through a series of diaries, 1963-1990. Most of the textual material in the fonds, however, relates to her career as a writer of both fiction and non- fiction, and consists of corrrespondence with her publishers and readers, reviews, manuscripts and typescripts of both published and unpublished works. -

Donald Creighton and His Macdonald
Introduction Donald Creighton and His Macdonald PB. WAITE Half a century ago the History Department at the University of Toronto inhabited a spacious old house at the corner of St. George and College streets that once belonged to Robert Baldwin, the Reform politician from the I 84os and I 8 50s. Hence it was called Baldwin House. In I950-5I, in a large west room on the ground floor, for two hours Donald Creighton held his weekly graduate seminar in Canadian history, I 840 to I 900. There were a dozen graduate students there that year, some of them war veterans, from several universities-Dalhousie, U.N.B., Queen's, Manitoba, U.B.C., as well as Toronto. The topic for discussion one January afternoon in I 9 5 I was the Pacific Scandal, with a paper given by an M.A. student from western Canada. The paper was not all that good, a slapdash affair grubbed up from secondary sources, mostly from Sir Joseph Pope's biography of Macdonald published in I 894. There was little use of primary sources, nothing from the Royal Commission Report on the scandal, nothing from the news papers. Creighton, long, lean and pensive, presided at the head of the table. In our experience he had always been fair. That he had opin ions we knew, but he rarely obtruded them. He seemed to be after what had really happened; he neither wanted nor expected con formity with his own views. So he did not ride roughshod over student papers, bullying as Chester Martin, head of the depart ment from I928 to I952, was wont to do. -

The Book: Residents of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside are not bound by poverty or addiction but rather driven by a sense of community, kinship and, above all, hope. For each of the past five years, Pivot Legal Society’s annual Hope in Shadows photography contest has empowered residents of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside by providing them with 200 disposable cameras to document their lives—thus giving them an artistic means to enter the ongoing and often stormy dialogue over the place they call home. Since the contest’s inception, DTES residents have taken over 20,000 images of their neighbourhood. Working with this archive, Brad Cran and Gillian Jerome have collected the personal stories behind these stunning photographs. In surprising and astounding ways, Hope in Shadows will not only change the way you think about the Downtown Eastside and other impoverished neighbourhoods; it will also change your view of society as we know it.
