It focuses on her sources in Mme de Staël’s, J.C.L. Simonde de Sismondi’s, August Schlegel’s and Henry Francis Cary’s critical readings of Dante. By analysing Mary Shelley’s use of Dante in Rambles, it will be shown that Mary Shelley became a mediator and introduced contemporary Italian political readings of his work and anticipated the Victorian interest in Dante’s Vita Nuova. -

The reader must not expect to find in this account of Blake's myth, or this explanation of his symbolic writings, a substitute for Blake's own works. A paraphrase is given of most of the more difficult poems, but no single thread of interpretation can fully guide the explorer through the intricate paths of a symbolism where most of the figures of speech have a two-fold meaning, and some are employed systematically in a three fold, or even a four-fold sense. " Allegory addressed to the intellectual powers while it is altogether hidden from the corporeal understanding is my definition," writes Blake, "of the most sublime poetry." Letter to Butts from Felpham, July 6th, 1803. Such allegory fills the "Prophetic Books," yet it is not so hiddon from the corporeal understanding as its author supposed. An explanation, continuous throughout, if not complete for side issues, may be obtained from the enigma itself by the aid of ordinary industry. -

Howland St. [recommended by] Mr Planta/ 6 months This is probably intended for the Scottish landscape painter Hugh Irvine (1782– 1829), who exhibited from 8 Howland Street in 1809. “This young gentleman, at an early period of life, manifested a strong inclination for the study of art, and for several years his application has been unremitting. For some time he was a pupil of Mr Reinagle of London, whose merit as an artist is well known; and he has long been a close student in landscape afer Nature” (Thom, History of Aberdeen, 1: 198). He was the third son of Alexander Irvine, 18th laird of Drum, Aberdeenshire (1754–1844), and his wife Jean (Forbes; d.1786). His uncle was the artist and art dealer James Irvine (1757–1831). Alexander Irvine had four sons and a daughter; Alexander (b.1777), Charles (b.1780), Hugh, Francis, and daughter Christian. There is no record of a Ralph Irvine among the Irvines of Drum (Wimberley, Short Account), nor was there a Royal Academy student or exhibiting or listed artist of this name, so this was surely a clerical error or misunderstanding. -

Dupont t took the better part of a morning to move it, but no more.1 By noon, on Friday, October 18, 1912, building supervisor Frank Carney could Irecord in his pocket diary that the last of the 2,907 volumes comprising the Dante Collection had been crated, passed through a chute down to a waiting truck, and carried of to temporary storage in Randall Hall.2 In a few short weeks, the remaining bookshelves would be emptied and the hollowed carcass of Gore Hall torn down so that a new library of titanic dimensions could be erected in its place, the Harry Elkins Widener Memorial Library. At the time, the Dante Collection at Harvard was neither the only nor the largest such collection in America. Te distinction for having the most extensive collection had belonged to Cornell for nearly two decades.3 Meanwhile, the University of Notre Dame had quietly begun assembling a collection on the poet that would soon grow to several thousand volumes,4 and other institutions, such as the University of Pennsylvania, 1 Much of the research for this essay was conducted while I was a Joan Nordell Visiting Fellow at Houghton Library in 2002–2003. -

FR: Anyway, once again I’ve persuaded you to sell! And this time nothing less than your Dante collection! LA: Hang on, don’ t rush things - you persuaded me to show some nice books to a few friends in the New World… FR: What has collecting Dante meant for you? LA: It’ s been one – the greatest – of the collections I’ve formed since I was six. FR: The exhibition of your collection which took place in Rome in 2011, celebrating 150 years since Italy’s reunification, do you see that as a kind of culmination? LA: Certainly, it was a very comprehensive presentation. Let’s just say it was like the forty- kilometre point in a marathon – not the conclusion (such a thing doesn’t exist) but you’ve gone a good part of the way… FR: But since then we’ve gone even further… And this exhibition in New York? LA: New York will reveal the progress of a life-long disease of collecting … and, who knows, it might also be the beginnings of something else, the seed of a great tree – a giant sequoia? – in the future. FR: What do you think of the catalogue? Do you find it a bit excessive? LA: Well, after all, it’s not just another catalogue it’s ‘the’ catalogue and a very beautiful one at that. -

It is addressed rather to the so-called general reader than to the serious Dante student. The narrative is taken largely from the pages of Villani, Boccaccio, and from other similar sources. The reader will find fiction (at any rate from the critic's point of view) as well as fact in these pages, but he will, I hope, be at no loss to distinguish between the two. The legends and traditions which hang around the name of a great personality are a not unimportant element in his biography, and may sometimes serve to place him as well as, if not better than, the more sober estimates of the serious historian. I have not, therefore, thought it outside the scope of this sketch of Dante's life to include some of the anecdotes which at an early date began to be associated with his name, though certain of them demonstrably belong to a far eai-lier period. Charles Armitage Brown, John Keats and Plymouth1 NICHOLAS ROE University of St Andrews In the mean time I will tell you about our Plymouth Institution. We have many literary and scientific men here, three rather high in fame, and they are members. During the six winter months we have a lecture and an after discussion there every Thursday, and during the summer tea and coffee once a month to keep us together and settle various points. The building is very handsome, of Grecian architecture. Ill as I was, some how I ventured to get up with a speech in my mouth before a hundred strangers, — (I that never had spoken ten words before ten such!) — and, to my surprise, made an impression. I am now hand in hand with them. In March, just as their season was ending, they were disappointed of a lecture; when I, bettering in health, read them one on “Shakespear’s Sonnets”. I am down for one next November on “The intellectual history of Florence”, and, if I wanted, for another on “The influence of Italian on English poetry”. This Institution suits me to a hair. I have lately been made their librarian. Every summer, (and this is a third) the Institution is opened as a gallery of paintings and drawings by resident and other artists, — and I am on the Committee, — nay, on the hanging one. I shall send my Hogarths, my two portraits of Keats from you, and the medallion in plaister of him by Girometti, which Woodhouse gave me; and also Kirkup’s drawings of yourself and Carlino, — […] you will be exhibited at Plymouth!2 So Charles Armitage Brown wrote to Joseph Severn, a resident at Rome since John Keats’s death there in 1821. -
