It is because of your support and guidance that the idea of this project came to be. Taijah i Abstract When studying the gendered and racialized experiences of Black women in higher education, research often focuses solely on faculty members as opposed to student affairs professionals. However, lack of support for Black women student affairs professionals leads to many developing racial battle fatigue. This project explores the effects of the intersection of oppressive systems on Black women student affairs professionals' journey through graduate school to the professional work setting. The implementation of a mentor sister circle program supported by higher education administration is proposed to provide this demographic with needed support during graduate school. The designed mentor program features an activity to build rapport between mentees and mentors, opportunities for professional development, and provides participants with a platform to voice their experiences to potential allies. Once completed, participants will be able to name a community of mentors and allies to assist them with discovering much needed self-care practices in the profession of student affairs. ii Table of There is virtually no medium that has not paid homage to the mammy in some form or another. In his series “Ameri- can Myths,”for example, artist Andy Warhol included both the mammy and Aunt Jemima, along with Howdy Doody, Uncle Sam, Dracula, and the Wicked Witch of the West (‹gs. 1 and 2).1 In the late 1980s, Italian pho- tographer Olivero Toscani created an advertisement for Benetton featuring a close-up of a white infant nursing at the breast of a headless, dark- skinned black woman wearing a red Shetland sweater (‹g. 3). The adver- tisement was met with unbridled criticism from African Americans, yet it won more advertising awards than any other image in Benetton’s advertis- ing history.2 Today, tourists visiting Lancaster, Kentucky, can tour the for- mer slave plantation of Governor William Owsley, ironically called Pleas- ant Retreat. The restored home features many remnants of the Old South, including a “charming mammy bench,” a combination rocking chair and cradle designed to allow mammies to nurse an infant and rock an additional baby at the same time.3 Diminutive mammy “nipple dolls” made in the 1920s from rubber bottle nipples with tiny white baby dolls cradled in their arms are both a “well-kept secret”and an excellent investment by collectors of southern Americana (‹g.

The emphasis on “neo” cultural productions, that is projects that look toward the past to re-imagine a new future, speaks to Laura Alexandra Harris’s assertion that a queer black feminist methodology necessitates reclamation of one’s history and an affirmation of desire as a form of resistance to shame. This dissertation reads black female bodies as subversive. In embracing their bodies as pleasurable, these unruly women resist racist and heterosexist hegemonic discourses which silence or pathologize black female sexuality and negate black women’s agency. Chapter One looks toward Barbara Smith’s 1977 publication, “Toward a Black Feminist Criticism,” as an inaugural point for thinking about black female sexuality outside of normative and pathologizing paradigms. It argues for a reading of Sula as a queer black femme novel, and from there develops a (neo) theory of black femme-inism which is indebted to and departs from Smith.

B.A. HAMPTON UNIVERSITY, 1997 DECONSTRUCTION OF STEREOTYPES AND MEDIATED MESSAGES IN AFRICAN-AMERICAN SITCOMS Advisor: Dr. Josephine Bradley Thesis dated May, 2002 This study examines the images of African Americans in black-themed sitcoms and mediated messages presented here. The study was based on the premise that the images of African Americans on television sitcoms are one dimensional and comedic. A content analysis approach was used to analyze various television sitcoms. Definitions were used to determine what type of image existed using the foundation provided by Donald Bogle and Stewart Hall. The researcher found that although many of the African-American-themed sitcoms investigated represented traditional stereotypical images, there were mediated messages in these sitcoms, which offered a new and different perspective on African Americans. This suggests that African-American images on black-themed sitcoms are moving forward. Additionally, the researcher found that sitcoms depicting African-American life from a comedic point-of-view seem to be more acceptable in popular culture than those which depict life from a dramatic and/or realistic point-of-view. It was her passion for rhetoric that inspired me to explore research through a feminist perspective. Her wisdom was there to guide me through the periods I felt most defeated.
