We got your monsters right here!By Fred AdelmanThis issue is a little bit different than all the others. The majority of the zine is dedicated to films that can be described as "Lovecraftian" (I hate that word, too, Tim) or otherwise films based on stories by H.P. Lovecraft. It also contains films that contain the Lovecraft touch (My favorite Lovecraft film is still THE RESURRECTED - 1991), including Part 1 of an extensive article (written by the always interesting Stephen R. Bissette) of the TV movie deemed too scary for TV and released theatrically, DARK INTRUDER (1965).This 125 page issue is not able to give all the Lovecraftian films their proper due, so the next issue will also deal with H.P. Lovecraft. There are also some non-Lovecraft delights also found in this issue, including Part 1 writer Daniel Best's extensive article on the Dracula stage tour in Australia in 1929, Part 2 of Christos Mouroukis' Monster Movie Marathon (which includes my favorite horror film of all time, PHANTASM - 1979), Dino-Monsters in Film Literature, book reviews and the always welcome Movie Checklist. In other words everything you need for a good afternoon or night of reading. Full or rare ad mats, film script pages and photos, MONSTER! #27 is yet another winner and is always delivered monthly. Don't ask me how they do it, but they do. A must-buy!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Awesome! A real treat for lovers of the genreBy eddieboThe amount of information and thoughtful quality writing that they pack into each one of these issues is staggering. Its hard to even get through all of it in a month. The sourcing information for the videos at the end of each issue is a gold mine, extremely useful. A real treat for lovers of the genre. Sole criticism is that the type could be a bit bigger, its REALLY small, well under 7 point, (hence, the 4-star rating) and this is coming from a guy who reads pretty much everything on a smartphone. Other than that - quality all the way around, highly, highly recommended!1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. greatBy tom sciaccaGreat as usual Okay, just in time for April Foolrsquo;s Day (not that wersquo;re foolinrsquo;, mind you!), here comes MONSTER! #27hellip; which just happens to be the first of our loose ldquo;H.P. Lovecraftrdquo; specials (wersquo;re doing another one next month, too). In this issue, itrsquo;s about a 70/30% split, respectively, between HPL-themed material and other stuff. Steve Bissette (with an invaluable assist from Rick Lai) gives us Part 1 of his massive, laboriously- researched two-part analysis of the made-for-TV monster movie DARK INTRUDER (1965), which, while not ldquo;officiallyrdquo; derived from any particular HPL written work, is steeped in Lovecraftian lore and atmosphere nonetheless. Our review section reflects the issuersquo;s main theme, including coverage ndash; by both long-time Lovecraft devotees and novices ndash; of such cinematic adaptations of his works (both ldquo;legitrdquo; or only nominal) as CASTLE FREAK (1995), CHILEAN GOTHIC (a.k.a. PICKMANrsquo;S MODEL, 2000), THE CURSE (1987), CURSE OF THE CRIMSON ALTAR (1968), THE DUNWICH HORROR (1970), THE HAUNTED PALACE (1963), ISLAND OF THE FISHMEN (1979), NECRONOMICON (1993), THE RESURRECTED (1991), and THE SHUTTERED ROOM (1967). Non-Lovecraft-related material this ish includes the first instalment of another epic historical overview from the scholarly Daniel Best on the subject of vintage horror entertainment Down Under, entitled ldquo;Australian Gothicrdquo;; this time Daniel covers the 1929 stage production of Bram Stokerrsquo;s DRACULA which toured Australiarsquo;s theatre circuit with considerable success in its day, but has since been as-good-as forgotten by history. All this and a bunch more goodies besides! Including: coverage of the PHANTASM movie quadrilogy, a piece about ldquo;apocalyptical dino-monstersrdquo; in modern popular culture, a review of the newest Karloff biography, Stephen Jacobsrsquo; BORIS KARLOFF: MORE THAN A MONSTER, plus, more, more, MORE! Other writing contributors this issue were C. Michael Hall, Christos Mouroukis, Eric Messina, Dennis Capicik, Allen A. Debus, Dawn Dabell, Sebastien Godin, Martiacute;n Nuacute;ntilde;ez, Matthew E. Banks, Christopher J. Maurer, Daniel Best, Les Moore, Brian Harris, Steve Fenton, and Tim Paxton. And not only that, but wersquo;ve also got some stark rsquo;nrsquo; stylinrsquo; HPL-inspired artwork from Jolyon Yates, Andy Ross, Matt Bradshaw and C. Michael Hall, too! And last but not least, rounding out this super-stuffed 125-pager is our usual listing covering the video availability of titles discussed within.
