There are more than 200 plants in the genus Artemisia- including southern wormwood, petite wormwood and Grande wormwood and encompasses about 500 species. The best-known species of wormwood is Artemisia absinthium, native to temperate Eurasia and North Africa and is branded for its extreme bitterness. It is a magical greens booze used as carminative to support healthy appetite, balances healthy flora, cleanse the digestive tract of parasite and toxins. It possesses anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, hepatoprotective, anti-helminthic and anti-depressant activity. Thujone excites nervous system when taken in small amount. Due to contrary history of wormwood, its application in individuals should be preceded by a thorough and cautious risk-benefit analysis. In this appraisal an attempt is done to validate scientifically, mentioned therapeutic potential of Artemisia absinthium in classical Unani literature using PubMed, Science Direct researches. This review gives an account of unique studies on C. speciosus phytochemical, toxicological, and pharmacological studies and traditional uses of C. speciosus based on searching the databases of Google Scholar, PubMed, Science Direct, and Springer Link. The previous studies stated the pharmacological potentials of C. speciosus, but it is still needed for more research efforts concerning molecular basis of its biological activities, especially in vivo models and safety assessment of its different extracts. KIRCHOFF AND ROLF RUTISHAUSER Department of Biology, University of North Carolina, Greensboro, North Carolina 27412 -5001; and Botanischer Garten, University Zürich, Zollikerstrasse 107, CH-8008 Zürich, Switzerland The spiromonostichous phyllotaxy of Costus, and other Costaceae, is characterized by low divergence angles, often as low as (30°—) 50°. This constrasts with the main series Fibonacci (divergence angles ap - proximating 137.5°) or distichous phyllotaxy found in all other Zingiberales. A morphological and devel- opmental study of three species of Costus revealed a number of facts about this unusual phyllotactic pattern. In C. scaber and C. woodsonii the divergence angles gradually change along a shoot, from 140 °-100° in the region of the cataphylls to 60°-45° in the inflorescence. In C. cuspidatus, the divergence angles change from 40°-100° in the cataphyll region to ca. 137 ° in the inflorescence. In all three species, the cataphylls and foliage leaves have tubular sheaths, while the inflorescence bracts are nonsheathing. Medicinal plant conservation is one of global concerns because the consequence is loss of many species useful in the primary healthcare of mankind. These natural resources are dwindling, as nearly 80 to 85% of raw drugs are sourced from the wild. International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is the global authority on the status of the natural world and the measures needed to safeguard it. IUCN congresses have produced several key international environmental agreements like the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) etc. It is noted that raw drugs for making a good number of Siddha formulations are derived from plants falling under IUCN’s rare, endangered and threatened (RET) category. The current study is aimed at exploring the RET status of medicinal plants used in Siddha. Method: The data of medicinal plants used in various Siddha formulations and as single drugs were collected and the IUCN status of the plants was checked in the Red list. Result: Siddha medicinal plants like Aconitum heterophyllum, Aquilaria malaccensis, Adhatoda beddomei, Nardostachys jatamansi are some of the examples of critically endangered species of plants facing threat due to continuous exploitation from wild. -

The current pantropical distribution of the order suggests an historical Gondwanan distribution, however the evolutionary history of the group has never been analyzed in a temporal context to test if the order is old enough to attribute its current distribution to vicariance mediated by the break-up of the supercontinent. Based on a phylogeny derived from morphological and molecular characters, we develop a hypothesis for the spatial and temporal evolution of Zingiberales using Dispersal-Vicariance Analysis (DIVA) combined with a local molecular clock technique that enables the simultaneous analysis of multiple gene loci with multiple calibration points. -

Accepted 12 April, 2013 Sixty Egyptian buffalo heifers ageing about one year old, with an average weight of about 250 to 260 kg were allotted randomly according to their live body weight and age into three equal groups; Group I which received a basal ration; Group II which received a basal ration with fine ground Costus speciosus roots in a concentration of 2.5 kg/ton ration and Group III which received a basal ration with fine ground C. speciosus roots in a concentration of 5 kg/ton ration. Blood samples were collected from each group and divided into two blood samples, one for serum separation and the other for hematological study. Separated serum samples were subjected to the biochemical analysis of glucose, cholesterol, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), creatinine, urea, uric acid and electrophoretic pattern. The obtained data revealed a decrease in serum glucose and cholesterol levels which may be utilized in anabolic pathways during this period. While total protein, albumin, α1-globulin, β-globulin, hemoglobin, packed cell volume (PCV) and lymphocytes were significantly increased especially in Group III. In addition, the erythrocytes antioxidant status was significantly improved by C. -

Saussurea lappa extract showed cytotoxic activities with IC50 values ranging from 2.5 mg/ml to 0.85 mg/ ml and it was observed that the Human Lung Fibroblast cells were the most sensitive cells (IC50 values; 0.8). The genotoxic potentialities of extract were observed as regulatory mechanism of gene expression with the finding that Saussurea lappa extract could regulate cell apoptosis. In MCF7 treated cells, treatments had the ability to down regulate the expression of both P53 and Bcl2 genes, whereas TGF, BAX, IKaB were up regulated. On the other hand, the treated Caco2 cells showed down regulation for P53, Bcl2 and IKaB genes. Aim: The aim of the present study were primarily to check the possible use of Saussurea lappa species as a natural anticancer remedy, secondly; the study investigated the action of extract on some cancer marker gene expression in the treated cells compared with the untreated ones.
