ABSTRACT the Women of Supernatural: More Than
ABSTRACT The Women of Supernatural: More than Stereotypes Miranda B. Leddy, M.A. Mentor: Mia Moody-Ramirez, Ph.D. This critical discourse analysis of the American horror television show, Supernatural, uses a gender perspective to assess the stereotypes and female characters in the popular series. As part of this study 34 episodes of Supernatural and 19 female characters were analyzed. Findings indicate that while the target audience for Supernatural is women, the show tends to portray them in traditional, feminine, and horror genre stereotypes. The purpose of this thesis is twofold: 1) to provide a description of the types of female characters prevalent in the early seasons of Supernatural including mother-figures, victims, and monsters, and 2) to describe the changes that take place in the later seasons when the female characters no longer fit into feminine or horror stereotypes. Findings indicate that female characters of Supernatural have evolved throughout the seasons of the show and are more than just background characters in need of rescue. These findings are important because they illustrate that representations of women in television are not always based on stereotypes, and that the horror genre is evolving and beginning to depict strong female characters that are brave, intellectual leaders instead of victims being rescued by men. The female audience will be exposed to a more accurate portrayal of women to which they can relate and be inspired. Copyright © 2014 by Miranda B. Leddy All rights reserved TABLE OF CONTENTS Tables -
Theology of Supernatural
religions Article Theology of Supernatural Pavel Nosachev School of Philosophy and Cultural Studies, HSE University, 101000 Moscow, Russia; [email protected] Received: 15 October 2020; Accepted: 1 December 2020; Published: 4 December 2020 Abstract: The main research issues of the article are the determination of the genesis of theology created in Supernatural and the understanding of ways in which this show transforms a traditional Christian theological narrative. The methodological framework of the article, on the one hand, is the theory of the occulture (C. Partridge), and on the other, the narrative theory proposed in U. Eco’s semiotic model. C. Partridge successfully described modern religious popular culture as a coexistence of abstract Eastern good (the idea of the transcendent Absolute, self-spirituality) and Western personified evil. The ideal confirmation of this thesis is Supernatural, since it was the bricolage game with images of Christian evil that became the cornerstone of its popularity. In the 15 seasons of its existence, Supernatural, conceived as a story of two evil-hunting brothers wrapped in a collection of urban legends, has turned into a global panorama of world demonology while touching on the nature of evil, the world order, theodicy, the image of God, etc. In fact, this show creates a new demonology, angelology, and eschatology. The article states that the narrative topics of Supernatural are based on two themes, i.e., the theology of the spiritual war of the third wave of charismatic Protestantism and the occult outlooks derived from Emmanuel Swedenborg’s system. The main topic of this article is the role of monotheistic mythology in Supernatural. -

No More Mr. Nice Angel Abstract Angels have occupied a prominent role in world religions and Western culture for centuries. The existence of multiple supernatural beings with varying degrees of hierarchical standing was a given for the polytheistic cultures that represented the majority of religious expressions in the ancient world. The inclusion of these supernatural beings in the three great monotheistic faiths of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam was significant because these faiths sought in ve ery way to emphasize the supremacy of the one God in contrast to the crowded spiritual field of polytheistic faiths. Angels could be problematic because they potentially provided a host of supernatural entities competing alongside the one God. Metafictional Strategies in Supernatural Alberto N
Breaking the Mirror Metafictional Strategies in Supernatural Alberto N. Garcia Like those guys, from the book. What are they called? Uh . Supernatural! Two guys use fake IDs with rock aliases, hunt down ghosts, demons, and vampires. What are their names? Uh . “The Monster at the End of This Book” (4.18) When the seller of the “Golden Comic” bookshop describes the protagonists of the novels written by Carver Edlund, viewers share the surprise of Sam and Dean, the protagonists of Supernatural, the tv show. With the characters’ realization that their own lives are being reflected in the books, the illusionist mirror created by this fantasy series of horror and adventure is shattered. Illusionism, argues Robert Stam, “pretends to be something more than mere artistic production; it presents its characters as real people, its sequence of words or images as real time, and its representations as substantiated fact” (1). But what happens in the “The Monster at the End of This Book” is not an isolated occurrence. Because one of the 146 breaking the mirror most unique narrative strategies of Supernatural is the way it creates a break with the mirror that characterizes traditional fiction and turns it in upon itself, underscoring its own fictitiousness. This rupture occurs, in varying degrees, throughout the entire series and proves essential in the Winchesters’ battle against the army of darkness. Patricia Waugh defines metafiction as “a term given to fictional writing which self-consciously and systematically draws attention to its status as an artifact in order to pose questions about the relation- ship between fiction and reality” (2). -

Polymediated Narrative: the Case of the Supernatural Episode “Fan Fiction”
International Journal of Communication 10(2016), 748–765 1932–8036/20160005 Polymediated Narrative: The Case of the Supernatural Episode “Fan Fiction” ART HERBIG Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne, USA ANDREW F. HERRMANN East Tennessee State University, USA Modern stories are the product of a recursive process influenced by elements of genre, outside content, medium, and more. These stories exist in a multitude of forms and are transmitted across multiple media. This article examines how those stories function as pieces of a broader narrative, as well as how that narrative acts as a world for the creation of stories. Through an examination of the polymediated nature of modern narratives, we explore the complicated nature of modern storytelling. Keywords: polymedia, narrative, rhetoric, fandom, television, story, convergence, transmedia, Supernatural, serialization, storytelling, mythology, popular, media, technology, audience, showrunner, discourse, myth, culture Whether one starts with the storyteller or the audience, or with ancient mythologies or new narratives, examining and working through stories is more art than science. Particularly in this media age, the definitions of terms such as content, consumption, and authorship are changing (Tyma, Herrmann, & Herbig, 2015). For instance, audiences are no longer assumed to be passive consumers of media. Academics, producers, and advertisers alike attempt to account for the ways they are blogging, Tweeting during broadcasts, Facebooking spoilers, writing fan/slash fiction, or being involved with participatory television talk shows dedicated to one particular series. These people are active participants, both consumers and producers simultaneously. On the other side, the producers, directors, and writers, traditionally thought of as the authors of our public texts, are now forced to interact and react to their audiences in ways that position them as much as interpreter as creator (McGee, 1990). -
Supernatural' As a Masculine Narrative
NO CHICK FLICK MOMENTS: 'SUPERNATURAL' AS A MASCULINE NARRATIVE April R. Boggs A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2009 Committee: Esther Clinton, Advisor Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor ii ABSTRACT Esther Clinton, Advisor This thesis examines the CW Network series Supernatural (hereafter SPN) as a revitalized masculine text. SPN as a masculine narrative is representative of 21st century conceptions of gender. Part of why it succeeds on the CW (a network aimed at 18 to 34-year-old women) is because it does not adhere to stringent binary thinking on gender. The show has only two main characters, brothers Sam and Dean Winchester, both of whom are meant to be all- American blue collar heroes. Though they are based in this traditional masculine image what sets the brothers apart is the way SPN has updated this very image to apply to contemporary mores. The first chapter examines the brothers’ roots in traditional heroic masculinity, applying a structuralist method of analysis to determine the heroic and narrative forms being used. Axel Olrik’s Epic Laws of Folk Narrative establish the dual-hero narrative tradition from which SPN is derived. Next, I dissect each brother’s individual narrative, utilizing Jan de Vries’ classical hero pattern for Sam and my own traits of the “new American folk hero” for Dean. Continuing in my effort to link the brothers to their traditional roots, I use examples from both folk and popular culture to show the progression of the two hero types in American culture.
